dharmepsuḥ samācaret nityaṃ śuddhaḥ kāruhastaḥ paṇyaṃ yac ca prasāritam brahmacārigataṃ bhaikṣaṃ nityaṃ medhyam iti śrutiḥ vatsaḥ prasnavane medhyaḥ śakuniḥ phalaśātane striyaś ca ratisaṃsarge śvā mṛgagrahaṇe śuciḥ ākarāḥ śucayaḥ sarve varjayitvā surākaram adūṣyāḥ saṃtatā dhārā vātodbhūtāś ca reṇavaḥ amedhyeṣu ca ye vṛkṣā uptāḥ puṣpaphalopagāḥ teṣām api na duṣyanti puṣpāṇi ca phalāni ca parokṣam adhiśritasyānnasyāvadyotyābhyukṣaṇam tathāpaṇeyānāṃ ca bhakṣāṇām bībhatsavaḥ śucikāmā hi devā nāśraddadhānasya havir juṣanta iti śucer aśraddadhānasya śraddadhānasya cāśuceḥ mīmāṃsitvobhayaṃ aśraddhayā dattaṃ havir nāśnanti devatāḥ iṣṭvā dattvāpi vā mūrkhaḥ svargaṃ nahi sa gacchati śaṅkāvihatacāritro yaḥ svābhiprāyam āśritaḥ śāstrātigaḥ smṛto mūrkho dharmatantroparodhanāt iti śākapuṣpaphalamūlauṣadhīnāṃ tu prakṣālanam śuṣkaṃ tṛṇam ayājñikaṃ kāṣṭhaṃ loṣṭaṃ vā tiraskṛtyāhorātrayor udagdakṣiṇāmukhaḥ pravṛtya śira uccared avamehed vā mūtre mṛdādbhiḥ prakṣālanam triḥ pāṇeḥ tadvat purīṣe paryāyāt tris triḥ pāyoḥ pāṇeś ca mūtravad retasa utsarge nīvīṃ visrasya paridhāyāpa upaspṛśet ārdraṃ tṛṇaṃ gomayaṃ bhūmiṃ vā samupaspṛśet nābher adhaḥ sparśanaṃ karmayukto varjayet ūrdhvaṃ vai puruṣasya nābhyai medhyam avācīnam amedhyam iti śrutiḥ śūdrāṇām āryādhiṣṭhitānām ardhamāsi māsi vā vapanam āryavad ācamanakalpaḥ vaiśyaḥ kusīdam upajīvet pañcaviṃśatis tv eva pañcamāṣikī syāt athāpy udāharanti yaḥ samargham ṛṇaṃ gṛhya mahārghaṃ saṃprayojayet sa vai vārddhuṣiko nāma sarvadharmeṣu garhitaḥ vṛddhiṃ ca bhrūṇahatyāṃ ca tulayā samatolayat atiṣṭhad bhrūṇahā koṭyāṃ vārddhuṣiḥ samakampata gorakṣakān vāṇijakāṃs tathā kārukuśīlavān preṣyān vārddhuṣikāṃś caiva viprāñśūdravad ācaret kāmaṃ tu pariluptakṛtyāya kadaryāya nāstikāya pāpīyase pūrvau dadyātām ayajñenāvivāhena vedasyotsādanena ca kulāny akulatāṃ yānti brāhmaṇātikrameṇa ca brāhmaṇātikramo nāsti mūrkhe mantravivarjite jvalantam agnim utsṛjya nahi bhasmani hūyate gobhir aśvaiś ca yānaiś ca kṛṣyā rājopasevayā kulāny akulatāṃ yānti yāni hīnāni mantrataḥ mantratas tu samṛddhāni kulāny alpadhanāny api kulasaṃkhyāṃ ca gacchanti karṣanti ca mahadyaśaḥ vedaḥ kṛṣivināśāya kṛṣir vedavināśinī śaktimān ubhayaṃ kuryād aśaktas tu kṛṣiṃ tyajet na vai devān pīvaro 'saṃyatātmā rorūyamāṇaḥ kakudī samaśnute calattundī rabhasaḥ kāmavādī kṛśāsa ity aṇavas tatra yānti yad yauvane carati vibhrameṇa sad vāsad vā yādṛśaṃ vā yadā vā uttare ced vayasi sādhuvṛttas tad evāsya bhavati netarāṇi śoceta manasā nityaṃ duṣkṛtāny anucintayan tapasvī cāpramādī ca tataḥ pāpāt pramucyate spṛśanti bindavaḥ pādau ya ācāmayataḥ parān na tair ucchiṣṭabhāvaḥ syāt tulyās te bhūmigaiḥ saha iti sapiṇḍeṣv ā daśāham āśaucam iti jananamaraṇayor adhikṛtya vadanty ṛtvigdīkṣitabrahmacārivarjam sapiṇḍatā tv ā saptamāt sapiṇḍeṣu ā saptamāsād ā dantajananād vodakopasparśanam piṇḍodakakriyā prete nātrivarṣe vidhīyate ā dantajananād vāpi dahanaṃ ca na kārayet aprattāsu ca kanyāsu prattāsv eke ha kurvate lokasaṃgrahaṇārthaṃ hi tad amantrāḥ striyo matāḥ strīṇām akṛtavivāhānāṃ tryahācchudhyanti bāndhavāḥ yathoktenaiva kalpena śudhyanti ca sanābhaya iti api ca prapitāmahaḥ pitāmahaḥ pitā svayaṃ sodaryā bhrātaraḥ savarṇāyāḥ putraḥ pautraḥ prapautras tatputravarjaṃ teṣāṃ ca putrapautram avibhaktadāyam sapiṇḍān ācakṣate vibhaktadāyān api sakulyān ācakṣate asatsv anyeṣu tadgāmī hy artho bhavati sapiṇḍābhāve sakulyaḥ tadabhāve pitācāryo 'ntevāsy ṛtvig vā haret tadabhāve rājā tatsvaṃ traividyavṛddhebhyaḥ samprayacchet na tv eva kadācit svayaṃ rājā brāhmaṇasvam ādadīta athāpy udāharanti brahmasvaṃ putrapautraghnaṃ viṣam ekākinaṃ haret na viṣaṃ viṣam ity āhur brahmasvaṃ viṣam ucyate tasmād rājā brāhmaṇasvaṃ nādadīta paramaṃ hy etad viṣaṃ yad brāhmaṇasvam iti jananamaraṇayoḥ saṃnipāte samāno daśarātraḥ atha yadi daśarātrāḥ saṃnipateyur ādyaṃ daśarātram āśaucam ā navamād divasāt janane tāvan mātāpitror daśāham āśaucam mātur ity eke tatpariharaṇāt pitur ity apare śukraprādhānyāt ayonijā hy api putrāḥ śrūyante mātāpitror eva tu saṃsargasāmānyāt maraṇe tu yathābālaṃ puraskṛtya yajñopavītāny apasavyāni kṛtvā tīrtham avatīrya sakṛt sakṛt trir nimajjyonmajjyottīryācamya tatpratyayam udakam āsicyāta evottīryācamya gṛhadvāry aṅgāram udakam iti saṃspṛśyākṣāralavaṇāśino daśāhaṃ kaṭam āsīran ekādaśyāṃ dvādaśyāṃ vā śrāddhakarma śeṣakriyāyāṃ loko 'nuroddhavyaḥ atrāpy asapiṇḍeṣu yathāsannaṃ trirātram ahorātram ekāham iti kurvīta ācāryopādhyāyatatputreṣu trirātram ṛtvijāṃ ca śiṣyasatīrthyasabrahmacāriṣu trirātram ahorātram ekāham iti kurvīta garbhasrāve garbhamāsasaṃmitā rātrayaḥ strīṇām paraśavopasparśane 'nabhisaṃdhipūrvaṃ sacelo 'paḥ spṛṣṭvā sadyaḥ śuddho bhavati abhisaṃdhipūrvaṃ trirātram ṛtumatyāṃ ca yas tato jāyate so 'bhiśasta iti vyākhyātāny asyai vratāni vedavikrayiṇaṃ yūpaṃ patitaṃ citim eva ca spṛṣṭvā samācaret snānaṃ śvānaṃ caṇḍālam eva ca brāhmaṇasya vraṇadvāre pūyaśoṇitasaṃbhave kṛmir utpadyate tatra prāyaścittaṃ kathaṃ bhavet gomūtraṃ gomayaṃ kṣīraṃ dadhi sarpiḥ kuśodakam tryahaṃ snātvā ca pītvā ca kṛmidaṣṭaḥ śucir bhavet śunopahataḥ sacelo 'vagāheta prakṣālya vā taṃ deśam agninā saṃspṛśya punaḥ prakṣālya pādau cācamya prayato bhavati athāpy udāharanti śunā daṣṭas tu yo vipro nadīṃ gatvā samudragām prāṇāyāmaśataṃ kṛtvā ghṛtaṃ prāśya viśudhyati suvarṇarajatābhyāṃ vā gavāṃ śṛṅgodakena vā navaiś ca kalaśaiḥ snātvā sadya eva śucir bhavet iti abhakṣyāḥ paśavo grāmyāḥ kravyādāḥ śakunayaś ca tathā kukkuṭasūkaram anyatrājāvibhyaḥ bhakṣyāḥ śvāvidgodhāśaśaśalyakakacchapakhaḍgāḥ khaḍgavarjāḥ pañca pañcanakhāḥ tatharśyahariṇapṛṣatamahiṣavarāhakuluṅgāḥ kuluṅgavarjāḥ pañca dvikhuriṇaḥ pakṣiṇas tittirikapotakapiñjalavārdhrāṇasamayūravāraṇā vāraṇavarjāḥ pañca viṣkirāḥ matsyāḥ sahasradaṃṣṭraś cilicimo varmibṛhacchiromaśakarirohitarājīvāḥ anirdaśāhasaṃdhinīkṣīram apeyam vivatsānyavatsayoś ca āvikam auṣṭrikam aikaśapham apeyam apeyapayaḥpāne kṛcchro 'nyatra gavyāt gavye tu trirātram upavāsaḥ paryuṣitaṃ śākayūṣamāṃsasarpiḥśṛtadhānāguḍadadhimadhusaktuvarjam śuktāni tathājāto guḍaḥ śrāvaṇyāṃ paurṇamāsyām āṣāḍhyāṃ vopākṛtya taiṣyāṃ māghyāṃ votsṛjeyuḥ utsṛjeyuḥ śucim adhvaraṃ devā juṣante śucikāmā hi devāḥ śucayaś ca tad eṣābhivadati om śucī vo havyā marutaḥ śucīnāṃ śuciṃ hinomy adhvaraṃ śucibhyaḥ ṛtena satyam ṛtasāpa āyañśucijanmānaḥ śucayaḥ pāvakāḥ iti ahataṃ vāsasāṃ śuci tasmād yat kiṃ cejyāsaṃyuktaṃ syāt sarvaṃ tad ahatair vāsobhiḥ kuryāt prakṣālitopavātāny akliṣṭāni vāsāṃsi patnīyajamānāv ṛtvijaś ca paridadhīran evaṃ prakramād ūrdhvam dīrghasomeṣu sattreṣu caivam yathāsamāmnātaṃ ca yathaitad abhicaraṇīyeṣv iṣṭipaśusomeṣu lohitoṣṇīṣā lohitavāsasaś cartvijaḥ pracareyuś citravāsasaś citrāsaṅgā vṛṣākapāv iti ca agnyādhāne kṣaumāṇi vāsāṃsi teṣām alābhe kārpāsikāny aurṇāni vā bhavanti mūtrapurīṣalohitaretaḥprabhṛtyupahatānāṃ mṛdādbhir iti prakṣālanam vāsovat tārpyavalkalānām valkalavat kṛṣṇājinānām na parihitam adhirūḍham aprakṣālitaṃ prāvaraṇam nāpalpūlitaṃ manuṣyasaṃyuktaṃ devatrā yuñjyāt ghanāyā bhūmer upaghāta upalepanam suṣirāyāḥ karṣaṇam klinnāyā medhyam āhṛtya pracchādanam caturbhiḥ śudhyate bhūmir gobhir ākramaṇāt khananād dahanād abhivarṣaṇāt pañcamāc copalepanāt ṣaṣṭhāt kālāt asaṃskṛtāyāṃ bhūmau nyastānāṃ tṛṇānāṃ prakṣālanam parokṣopahatānām abhyukṣaṇam evaṃ kṣudrasamidhām mahatāṃ kāṣṭhānām upaghāte prakṣālyāvaśoṣaṇam bahūnāṃ tu prokṣaṇam dārumayāṇāṃ pātrāṇām ucchiṣṭasamanvārabdhānām avalekhanam ucchiṣṭalepopahatānām avatakṣaṇam mūtrapurīṣalohitaretaḥprabhṛtyupahatānām utsargaḥ tad etad anyatra nirdeśāt yathaitad agnihotre gharmocchiṣṭe ca dadhigharme ca kuṇḍapāyinām ayane cotsargiṇām ayane ca dākṣāyaṇayajñe ceḍādadhe ca catuścakre ca brahmaudaneṣu ca teṣu sarveṣu darbhair adbhiḥ prakṣālanam sarveṣv eva somabhakṣeṣv adbhir eva mārjālīye prakṣālanam mūtrapurīṣalohitaretaḥprabhṛtyupahatānām utsargaḥ mṛnmayānāṃ pātrāṇām ucchiṣṭasamanvārabdhānām avakūlanam ucchiṣṭalepopahatānāṃ punardahanam mūtrapurīṣalohitaretaḥprabhṛtyupahatānām utsargaḥ taijasānāṃ pātrāṇāṃ pūrvavat parimṛṣṭānāṃ prakṣālanam parimārjanadravyāṇi gośakṛnmṛdbhasmeti mūtrapurīṣalohitaretaḥprabhṛtyupahatānāṃ punaḥkaraṇam gomūtre vā saptarātraṃ pariśāyanaṃ mahānadyāṃ vā evam aśmamayānām alābubilvavināḍānāṃ govālaiḥ parimārjanam naḍaveṇuśarakuśavyūtānāṃ gomayenādbhir iti prakṣālanam vrīhīṇām upaghāte prakṣālyāvaśoṣaṇam bahūnāṃ tu prokṣaṇam taṇḍulānām utsargaḥ evaṃ siddhahaviṣām mahatāṃ śvavāyasaprabhṛtyupahatānāṃ taṃ deśaṃ puruṣānnam uddhṛtya pavamānaḥ suvarjana iti etenānuvākenābhyukṣaṇam madhūdake payovikāre ca pātrāt pātrāntarānayane śaucam evaṃ tailasarpiṣī ucchiṣṭasamanvārabdhe udake 'vadhāyopayojayet amedhyābhyādhāne samāropyāgniṃ mathitvā pavamāneṣṭiḥ śaucadeśamantrāvṛdarthadravyasaṃskārakālabhedeṣu pūrvapūrvaprādhānyam pūrvapūrvaprādhānyam uttarata upacāro vihāraḥ tathāpavargaḥ viparītaṃ pitryeṣu pādopahataṃ prakṣālayet aṅgam upaspṛśya sicaṃ vāpa upaspṛśet evaṃ chedanabhedanakhanananirasanapitryarākṣasanairṛtaraudrābhicaraṇīyeṣu na mantravatā yajñāṅgenātmānam abhipariharet abhyantarāṇi yajñāṅgāni bāhyā ṛtvijaḥ patnīyajamānāv ṛtvigbhyo 'ntaratamau yajñāṅgebhya ājyam ājyāddhavīṃṣi havirbhyaḥ paśuḥ paśoḥ somaḥ somād agnayaḥ yathākarmartvijo na vihārād abhiparyāvarteran prāṅmukhaś ced dakṣiṇam aṃsam abhiparyāvarteta pratyaṅmukhaḥ savyam antareṇa cātvālotkarau yajñasya tīrtham acātvāla āhavanīyotkarau tataḥ kartāro yajamānaḥ patnī ca prapadyeran visaṃsthite saṃsthite ca saṃcaro 'nutkaradeśāt nāprokṣitam aprapannaṃ klinnaṃ kāṣṭhaṃ samidhaṃ vābhyādadhyāt agreṇāhavanīyaṃ brahmayajamānau prapadyete jaghanenāhavanīyam ity eke dakṣiṇenāhavanīyaṃ brahmāyatanaṃ tadapareṇa yajamānasya uttarāṃ śroṇim uttareṇa hotuḥ utkara āgnīdhrasya jaghanena gārhapatyaṃ patnyāḥ teṣu kāle kāla eva darbhān saṃstṛṇāti ekaikasya codakamaṇḍalur upāttaḥ syād ācamanārthaḥ vratopeto dīkṣitaḥ syāt na parapāpaṃ vaden na krudhyen na roden mūtrapurīṣe nāvekṣeta amedhyaṃ dṛṣṭvā japati abaddhaṃ mano daridraṃ cakṣuḥ sūryo jyotiṣāṃ śreṣṭho dīkṣe mā mā hāsīr iti atha yady enam abhivarṣati undatīr balaṃ dhattaujo dhatta balaṃ dhatta mā me dīkṣāṃ mā tapo nirvadhiṣṭeti catvāro varṇā brāhmaṇakṣatriyaviṭśūdrāḥ teṣāṃ varṇānupūrvyeṇa catasro bhāryā brāhmaṇasya tisro rājanyasya dve vaiśyasya ekā śūdrasya tāsu putrāḥ savarṇānantarāsu savarṇāḥ ekāntaradvyantarāsv ambaṣṭhograniṣādāḥ pratilomāsv āyogavamāgadhavaiṇakṣattṛpulkasakukkuṭavaidehakacaṇḍālaḥ ambaṣṭhāt prathamāyāṃ śvapākaḥ ugrād dvitīyāyāṃ vaiṇaḥ niṣādāt tṛtīyāyāṃ pulkasaḥ viparyaye kukkuṭaḥ niṣādena niṣādyām ā pañcamāj jāto 'pahanti śūdratām tam upanayet ṣaṣṭhaṃ yājayet saptamo 'vikṛtabījaḥ samabījaḥ sama ity eṣāṃ saṃjñāḥ krameṇa nipatanti triṣu varṇeṣu sādṛśyād avrato janayet tu yān tān sāvitrīparibhraṣṭān vrātyān āhur manīṣiṇaḥ vrātyān āhur manīṣiṇa iti rathakārāmbaṣṭhasūtogramāgadhāyogavavaiṇakṣattṛpulkasakukkuṭavaidehakacaṇḍālaśvapākaprabhṛtayaḥ tatra savarṇāsu savarṇāḥ brāhmaṇāt kṣatriyāyāṃ brāhmaṇo vaiśyāyām ambaṣṭhaḥ śūdrāyāṃ niṣādaḥ pāraśava ity eke kṣatriyād vaiśyāyāṃ kṣatriyaḥ śūdrāyām ugraḥ vaiśyācchūdrāyāṃ rathakāraḥ śūdrād vaiśyāyāṃ māgadhaḥ kṣatriyāyāṃ kṣattā brāhmaṇyāṃ caṇḍālaḥ vaiśyāt kṣatriyāyām āyogavo brāhmaṇyāṃ vaidehakaḥ kṣatriyād brāhmaṇyāṃ sūtaḥ tatrāmbaṣṭhograyoḥ saṃyoge bhavatyanulomaḥ kṣattṛvaidehakayoḥ pratilomaḥ ugrāj jātaḥ kṣattryāṃ śvapākaḥ vaidehakād ambaṣṭhāyāṃ vaiṇaḥ niṣādācchūdrāyāṃ pulkasaḥ śūdrān niṣādyāṃ kukkuṭaḥ varṇasaṃkarād utpannān vrātyān āhur manīṣiṇaḥ vrātyān āhur manīṣiṇa iti ṣaḍbhāgabhṛto rājā rakṣet prajāḥ brahma vai svaṃ mahimānaṃ brāhmaṇeṣv adadhād adhyayanādhyāpanayajanayājanadānapratigrahasaṃyuktaṃ vedānāṃ guptyai kṣatre balam adhyayanayajanadānaśastrakośabhūtarakṣaṇasaṃyuktaṃ kṣatrasya vṛddhyai viṭsv adhyayanayajanadānakṛṣivāṇijyapaśupālanasaṃyuktaṃ karmaṇāṃ vṛddhyai śūdreṣu pūrveṣāṃ paricaryām patto hy asṛjyanteti sarvatodhuraṃ purohitaṃ vṛṇuyāt tasya śāsane varteta saṃgrāme na nivarteta na karṇibhir na digdhaiḥ praharet bhītamattonmattapramattavisaṃnāhastrībālavṛddhabrāhmaṇair na yudhyeta anyatrātatāyinaḥ athāpy udāharanti adhyāpakaṃ kule jātaṃ yo hanyād ātatāyinam na tena bhrūṇahā bhavati manyus tan manyum ṛcchati iti sāmudraśulko varaṃ rūpam uddhṛtya daśapaṇaṃ śatam anyeṣām api sārānurūpyeṇānupahatya dharmyaṃ prakalpayet abrāhmaṇasya pranaṣṭasvāmikaṃ rikthaṃ saṃvatsaraṃ paripālya rājā haret avadhyo vai brāhmaṇaḥ sarvāparādheṣu brāhmaṇasya brahmahatyāgurutalpagamanasuvarṇasteyasurāpāneṣu kusindhabhagasṛgālasurādhvajāṃs taptenāyasā lalāṭe 'ṅkayitvā viṣayān nirdhamanam kṣatriyādīnāṃ brāhmaṇavadhe vadhaḥ sarvasvaharaṇam ca teṣām eva tulyāpakṛṣṭavadhe yathābalam anurūpān daṇḍān prakalpayet kṣatriyavadhe gosahasram ṛṣabhādhikaṃ rājña utsṛjed vairaniryātanārtham śataṃ vaiśye daśa śūdra ṛṣabhaś cātrādhikaḥ śūdravadhena strīvadho govadhaś ca vyākhyāto 'nyatrātreyyā vadhād dhenvanaḍuhoś ca vadhe dhenvanaḍuhor ante cāndrāyaṇaṃ caret ātreyyā vadhaḥ kṣatriyavadhena vyākhyātaḥ haṃsabhāsabarhiṇacakravākapracalākakākolūkamaṇḍūkaḍiḍḍikaḍerikāśvababhrunakulādīnāṃ vadhe śūdravat lokasaṃgrahaṇārthaṃ yathā dṛṣṭaṃ śrutaṃ vā sākṣī sākṣyaṃ brūyāt pādo 'dharmasya kartāraṃ pādo gacchati sākṣiṇam pādaḥ sabhāsadaḥ sarvān pādo rājānam ṛcchati rājā bhavaty anenāś ca mucyante ca sabhāsadaḥ eno gacchati kartāraṃ yatra nindyo ha nindyate sākṣiṇaṃ caivam uddiṣṭaṃ yatnāt pṛcched vicakṣaṇaḥ yāṃ rātrim ajaniṣṭhās tvaṃ yāṃ ca rātriṃ mariṣyasi etayor antarā yat te sukṛtaṃ sukṛtaṃ bhavet tat sarvaṃ rājagāmi syād anṛtaṃ bruvatas tava trīn eva ca pitṝn hanti trīn eva ca pitāmahān sapta jātān ajātāṃś ca sākṣī sākṣyaṃ mṛṣā vadan hiraṇyārthe anṛte hanti trīn eva ca pitāmahān pañca paśvanṛte hanti daśa hanti gavānṛte śatam aśvānṛte hanti sahasraṃ puruṣānṛte sarvaṃ bhūmyanṛte hanti sākṣī sākṣyaṃ mṛṣā vadan catvāro varṇāḥ putriṇaḥ sākṣiṇaḥ syur anyatra śrotriyarājanyapravrajitamānuṣyahīnebhyaḥ smṛtau pradhānataḥ pratipattiḥ ato 'nyathā kartapatyam dvādaśarātraṃ taptaṃ payaḥ pibet kūśmāṇḍair vā juhuyād iti kūśmāṇḍair vā juhuyād iti aṣṭau vivāhāḥ śrutaśīle vijñāya brahmacāriṇe 'rthine dīyate sa brāhmaḥ ācchādyālaṃkṛtya eṣā saha dharmaś caryatām iti prājāpatyaḥ pūrvāṃ lājāhutiṃ hutvā gobhyāṃ sahārṣaḥ dakṣiṇāsu nīyamānāsv antarvedy ṛtvije sa daivaḥ dhanenopatoṣyāsuraḥ sakāmena sakāmāyā mithaḥ saṃyogo gāndharvaḥ prasahya haraṇād rākṣasaḥ suptāṃ mattāṃ pramattāṃ vopagacched iti paiśācaḥ teṣāṃ catvāraḥ pūrve brāhmaṇasya teṣv api pūrvaḥ pūrvaḥ śreyān uttareṣām uttara uttaraḥ pāpīyān atrāpi ṣaṣṭhasaptamau kṣatradharmānugatau tatpratyayatvāt kṣatrasya pañcamāṣṭamau vaiśyaśūdrāṇām ayantritakalatrā hi vaiśyaśūdrā bhavanti karṣaṇaśuśrūṣādhikṛtatvāt gāndharvam apy eke praśaṃsanti sarveṣāṃ snehānugatatvāt yathā yukto vivāhas tathā yuktā prajā bhavatīti vijñāyate athāpy udāharanti krītā dravyeṇa yā nārī sā na patnī vidhīyate sā na daive na sā pitrye dāsīṃ tāṃ kāśyapo 'bravīt śulkena ye prayacchanti svasutāṃ lobhamohitāḥ ātmavikrayiṇaḥ pāpā mahākilbiṣakārakāḥ patanti narake ghore ghnanti cāsaptamaṃ kulam gamanāgamanaṃ caiva sarvaṃ śulke vidhīyate paurṇamāsyaṣṭakāmāvāsyāgnyutpātabhūmikampaśmaśānadeśapatiśrotriyaikatīrthaprayāṇeṣv ahorātram anadhyāyaḥ vāte pūtigandhe nīhāre ca nṛttagītavāditraruditasāmaśabdeṣu tāvantaṃ kālam stanayitnuvarṣavidyutsaṃnipāte tryaham anadhyāyo 'nyatra varṣākālāt varṣākāle 'pi varṣavarjam ahorātrayoś ca tatkālam pitryapratigrahabhojanayoś ca taddivasaśeṣam bhojaneṣv ā jaraṇam pāṇimukho hi brāhmaṇaḥ athāpy udāharanti bhuktaṃ pratigṛhītaṃ ca nirviśeṣam iti śrutiḥ pitaryuparate trirātram dvayam u ha vai suśravaso 'nūcānasya reto brāhmaṇasyordhvaṃ nābher adhastād anyat sa yad ūrdhvaṃ nābhes tena haitat prajāyate yad brāhmaṇān upanayati yad adhyāpayati yad yājayati yat sādhu karoti sarvāsyaiṣa prajā bhavati atha yad avācīnaṃ nābhes tena hāsyaurasī prajā bhavati tasmācchrotriyam anūcānam aprajo 'sīti na vadanti tasmād dvināmā dvimukho vipro dviretā dvijanmā ceti śūdrāpapātraśravaṇasaṃdarśanayoś ca tāvantaṃ kālam naktaṃ śivāvirāve nādhīyīta svapnāntam ahorātrayoś ca saṃdhyayoḥ parvasu ca nādhīyīta na māṃsam aśnīyān na striyam upeyāt parvasu hi rakṣaḥpiśācā vyabhicāravanto bhavantīti vijñāyate anyeṣu cādbhutotpāteṣv ahorātram anadhyāyo 'nyatra mānasāt mānase 'pi jananamaraṇayor anadhyāyaḥ athāpy udāharanti hantyaṣṭamī hy upādhyāyaṃ hanti śiṣyaṃ caturdaśī hanti pañcadaśī vidyāṃ tasmāt parvaṇi varjayet tasmāt parvaṇi varjayed iti athātaḥ prāyaścittāni bhrūṇahā dvādaśa samāḥ kapālī khaṭvāṅgī gardabhacarmavāsā araṇyaniketanaḥ śmaśāne dhvajaṃ śavaśiraḥ kṛtvā kuṭīṃ kārayet tām āvaset saptāgārāṇi bhaikṣaṃ caran svakarmācakṣāṇas tena prāṇān dhārayet alabdhvopavāsaḥ aśvamedhena gosavenāgniṣṭutā vā yajeta aśvamedhāvabhṛthe vātmānaṃ pāvayet athāpy udāharanti amatyā brāhmaṇaṃ hatvā duṣṭo bhavati dharmataḥ ṛṣayo niṣkṛtiṃ tasya vadanty amatipūrvake matipūrvaṃ ghnatas tasya niṣkṛtir nopalabhyate apagūrya caret kṛcchram atikṛcchraṃ nipātane kṛcchraṃ cāndrāyaṇaṃ caiva lohitasya pravartane tasmān naivāpagureta na ca kurvīta śoṇitam iti nava samā rājanyasya tisro vaiśyasya saṃvatsaraṃ śūdrasya striyāś ca brāhmaṇavad ātreyyāḥ gurutalpagas tapte lohaśayane śayīta sūrmiṃ vā jvalantīṃ śliṣyet liṅgaṃ vā savṛṣaṇaṃ parivāsyāñjalāv ādhāya dakṣiṇāpratīcyor diśor antareṇa gacched ā nipatanāt stenaḥ prakīrya keśān saidhrakam musalam ādāya skandhena rājānaṃ gacched anena māṃ jahīti tenainaṃ hanyāt athāpy udāharanti skandhenādāya musalaṃ steno rājānam anviyāt anena śādhi māṃ rājan kṣatradharmam anusmaran śāsane vā visarge vā steno mucyeta kilbiṣāt aśāsanāt tu tad rājā stenād āpnoti kilbiṣam iti surāṃ pītvoṣṇayā kāyaṃ dahet amatyā pāne kṛcchrābdapādaṃ caret punarupanayanaṃ ca vapanavrataniyamalopaś ca pūrvānuṣṭhitatvāt athāpy udāharanti amatyā vāruṇīṃ pītvā prāśya mūtrapurīṣayoḥ brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyo vaiśyaḥ punaḥsaṃskāram arhati surādhāne tu yo bhāṇḍe apaḥ paryuṣitāḥ pibet śaṅkhapuṣpīvipakvena ṣaḍahaṃ kṣīreṇa vartayet guruprayuktaś cen mriyeta gurus trīn kṛcchrāṃś caret etad evāsaṃskṛte brahmacāriṇaḥ śavakarmaṇā vratāvṛttir anyatra mātāpitror ācāryāc ca sa ced vyādhīyīta kāmaṃ guror ucchiṣṭaṃ bhaiṣajyārthe sarvaṃ prāśnīyāt yenecchet tena cikitset sa yadā gadī syāt tad utthāyādityam upatiṣṭheta haṃsaḥ śuciṣad iti etayā divā retaḥ siktvā trir apo hṛdayaṃgamāḥ pibed retasyābhiḥ yo brahmacārī striyam upeyāt so 'vakīrṇī sa gardabhaṃ paśum ālabheta nairṛtaḥ paśuḥ puroḍāśaś ca rakṣodevato yamadevato vā śiśnāt prāśitram apsv avadānaiś carantīti vijñāyate api vāmāvāsyāyāṃ niśy agnim upasamādhāya dārvihomikīṃ pariceṣṭāṃ kṛtvā dve ājyāhutī juhoti kāmāvakīrṇo 'smy avakīrṇo 'smi kāma kāmāya svāhā kāmābhidrugdho 'smy abhidrugdho 'smi kāma kāmāya svāheti hutvā prayatāñjaliḥ kavātiryaṅṅ agnim abhimantrayeta saṃ mā siñcantu marutaḥ sam indraḥ saṃ bṛhaspatiḥ saṃ māyam agniḥ siñcatv āyuṣā ca balena cāyuṣmantaṃ karotu meti athāsya jñātayaḥ pariṣady udapātraṃ ninayeyur asāv aham itthaṃbhūta iti caritvāpaḥ payo ghṛtaṃ madhu lavaṇam ity ārabdhavantaṃ brāhmaṇā brūyuś caritaṃ tvayeti om itītaraḥ pratyāha caritanirveśaṃ savanīyaṃ kuryuḥ sagotrāṃ ced amatyopagacchen mātṛvad enāṃ bibhṛyāt prajātā cet kṛcchrābdapādaṃ caritvā yan ma ātmano mindābhūt punar agniś cakṣur adād iti etābhyāṃ juhuyāt parivittaḥ parivettā yā cainaṃ parivindati sarve te narakaṃ yānti dātṛyājakapañcamāḥ parivittaḥ parivettā dātā yaś cāpi yājakaḥ kṛcchradvādaśarātreṇa strī trirātreṇa śudhyatīti atha patanīyāni samudrasaṃyānam brahmasvanyāsāpaharaṇam bhūmyanṛtam sarvapaṇyair vyavaharaṇam śūdrasevanam śūdrābhijananam tadapatyatvaṃ ca eteṣām anyatamaṃ kṛtvā caturthakālā mitabhojinaḥ syur apo 'bhyaveyuḥ savanānukalpam sthānāsanābhyāṃ viharanta ete tribhir varṣais tad apaghnanti pāpam yad ekarātreṇa karoti pāpaṃ kṛṣṇaṃ varṇaṃ brāhmaṇaḥ sevamānaḥ caturthakāla udakābhyavāyī tribhir varṣais tad apahanti pāpam athopapātakāni agamyāgamanaṃ gurvīsakhīṃ gurusakhīm apapātrāṃ patitāṃ ca gatvā bheṣajakaraṇaṃ grāmayājanaṃ raṅgopajīvanaṃ nāṭyācāryatā gomahiṣīrakṣaṇaṃ yac cānyad apy evaṃ yuktaṃ kanyādūṣaṇam iti teṣāṃ tu nirveśaḥ patitavṛttir dvau saṃvatsarau athāśucikarāṇi dyūtam abhicāro 'nāhitāgner uñchavṛttitā samāvṛttasya bhaikṣacaryā tasya caiva gurukule vāsa ūrdhvaṃ caturbhyo māsebhyas tasya cādhyāpanaṃ nakṣatranirdeśaś ceti teṣāṃ tu nirveśo dvādaśa māsān dvādaśa ardhamāsān dvādaśa dvādaśāhān dvādaśa ṣaḍahān dvādaśa tryahān dvādaśāhaṃ ṣaḍahaṃ tryaham ahorātram ekāham iti yathā karmābhyāsaḥ atha patitāḥ samavasāya dharmāṃś careyur itaretarayājakā itaretarādhyāpakā mitho vivahamānāḥ putrān saṃniṣpādya brūyur vipravrajatāsmat ta evam āryān sampratipatsyatheti athāpi na sendriyaḥ patati tad etena veditavyam aṅgahīno 'pi sāṅgaṃ janayet mithyaitad iti hārītaḥ dadhidhānīsadharmāḥ striyaḥ syuḥ yo hi dadhidhānyām aprayataṃ paya ātacya manthati na tacchiṣṭā dharmakṛtyeṣūpayojayanti evam aśuci śukraṃ yan nirvartate na tena saha saṃprayogo vidyate aśuciśukrotpannānāṃ teṣām icchatāṃ prāyaścittiḥ patanīyānāṃ tṛtīyo 'ṃśaḥ strīṇām aṃśas tṛtīyaḥ athāpy udāharanti bhojanābhyañjanād dānād yad anyat kurute tilaiḥ śvaviṣṭhāyāṃ kṛmir bhūtvā pitṛbhiḥ saha majjatīti pitṝn vā eṣa vikrīṇīte yas tilān vikrīṇīte prāṇān vā eṣa vikrīṇīte yas taṇḍulān vikrīṇīte sukṛtāṃśān vā eṣa vikrīṇīte yaḥ paṇamāno duhitaraṃ dadāti tṛṇakāṣṭham avikṛtaṃ vikreyam athāpy udāharanti paśavaś caikatodantā aśmā ca lavaṇoddhṛtaḥ etad brāhmaṇa te paṇyaṃ tantuś cārajanīkṛta iti pātakavarjaṃ vā babhruṃ piṅgalāṃ gāṃ romaśāṃ sarpiṣāvasicya kṛṣṇais tilair avakīryānūcānāya dadyāt kūśmāṇḍair vā dvādaśāham yad arvācīnam eno bhrūṇahatyāyās tasmān mucyata iti pātakābhiśaṃsane kṛcchraḥ tadabdo 'bhiśaṃsituḥ saṃvatsareṇa patati patitena samācaran yājanādhyāpanād yaunān na tu yānāsanāśanād iti amedhyaprāśane prāyaścittir naiṣpurīṣyam tat saptarātreṇāvāpyate apaḥ payo ghṛtaṃ parāka iti pratitryaham uṣṇāni sa taptakṛcchraḥ tryahaṃ prātas tathā sāyam ayācitaṃ parāka iti kṛcchraḥ prātaḥ sāyam ayācitaṃ parāka iti trayaś catūrātrāḥ sa eṣa strībālavṛddhānāṃ kṛcchraḥ yāvat sakṛd ādadīta tāvad aśnīyāt pūrvavat so 'tikṛcchraḥ abbhakṣas tṛtīyaḥ sa kṛcchrātikṛcchraḥ kṛcchre triṣavaṇam udakopasparśanam adhaḥśayanam ekavastratā keśaśmaśrulomanakhavāpanam etad eva striyāḥ keśavapanavarjam keśavapanavarjam nityodakī nityayajñopavītī nityasvādhyāyī vṛṣalānnavarjī ṛtau ca gacchan vidhivac ca juhvan na brāhmaṇaś cyavate brahmalokāt manuḥ putrebhyo dāyaṃ vyabhajad iti śrutiḥ samaśaḥ sarveṣām aviśeṣāt varaṃ vā rūpam uddharej jyeṣṭhaḥ tasmāj jyeṣṭhaṃ putraṃ dhanena niravasāyayantīti śrutiḥ daśānāṃ vaikam uddharej jyeṣṭhaḥ samam itare vibhajeran pitur anumatyā dāyavibhāgaḥ sati pitari caturṇāṃ varṇānāṃ goaśvājāvayo jyeṣṭhāṃśaḥ nānāvarṇastrīputrasamavāye dāyaṃ daśāṃśān kṛtvā caturas trīn dvāv ekam iti yathākramaṃ vibhajeran aurase tūtpanne savarṇās tṛtīyāṃśaharāḥ savarṇāputrānantarāputrayor anantarāputraś ced guṇavān sa jyeṣṭhāṃśaṃ haret guṇavān hi śeṣāṇāṃ bhartā bhavati savarṇāyāṃ saṃskṛtāyāṃ svayamutpāditam aurasaṃ putraṃ vidyāt athāpy udāharanti aṅgād aṅgāt sambhavasi hṛdayād adhi jāyase ātmā vai putranāmāsi sa jīva śaradaḥ śatam iti abhyupagamya duhitari jātaṃ putrikāputram anyaṃ dauhitram athāpy udāharanti ādiśet prathame piṇḍe mātaraṃ putrikāsutaḥ dvitīye pitaraṃ tasyās tṛtīye ca pitāmaham iti mṛtasya prasūto yaḥ klībavyādhitayor vānyenānumate sve kṣetre sa kṣetrajaḥ sa eṣa dvipitā dvigotraś ca dvayor api svadhārikthabhāg bhavati athāpy udāharanti dvipituḥ piṇḍadānaṃ syāt piṇḍe piṇḍe ca nāmanī trayaś ca piṇḍāḥ ṣaṇṇāṃ syur evaṃ kurvan na muhyati mātāpitṛbhyāṃ datto 'nyatareṇa vā yo 'patyārthe parigṛhyate sa dattaḥ sadṛśaṃ yaṃ sakāmaṃ svayaṃ kuryāt sa kṛtrimaḥ gṛhe gūḍhotpanno 'nte jñāto gūḍhajaḥ mātāpitṛbhyām utsṛṣṭo 'nyatareṇa vā yo 'patyārthe parigṛhyate so 'paviddhaḥ asaṃskṛtām anatisṛṣṭāṃ yām upagacchet tasyāṃ yo jātaḥ sa kānīnaḥ yā garbhiṇī saṃskriyate vijñātā vāvijñātā vā tasyāṃ yo jātaḥ sa sahoḍhaḥ mātāpitror hastāt krīto 'nyatareṇa vā yo 'patyārthe parigṛhyate sa krītaḥ klībaṃ tyaktvā patitaṃ vā yānyaṃ patiṃ vindet tasyāṃ punarbhvāṃ yo jātaḥ sa paunarbhavaḥ mātāpitṛvihīno yaḥ svayam ātmānaṃ dadyāt sa svayaṃdattaḥ dvijātipravarācchūdrāyāṃ jāto niṣādaḥ kāmāt pāraśava iti putrāḥ athāpy udāharanti aurasaṃ putrikāputraṃ kṣetrajaṃ dattakṛtrimau gūḍhajaṃ cāpaviddhaṃ ca rikthabhājaḥ pracakṣate kānīnaṃ ca sahoḍhaṃ ca krītaṃ paunarbhavaṃ tathā svayaṃdattaṃ niṣādaṃ ca gotrabhājaḥ pracakṣate teṣāṃ prathama evety āhaupajaṅghaniḥ idānīm aham īrṣyāmi strīṇāṃ janaka no purā yato yamasya sadane janayituḥ putram abruvan retodhāḥ putraṃ nayati paretya yamasādane tasmāt svabhāryāṃ rakṣantu bibhyataḥ pararetasaḥ apramattā rakṣata tantum etaṃ mā vaḥ kṣetre parabījāni vāpsuḥ janayituḥ putro bhavati sāṃparāye moghaṃ vettā kurute tantum etam iti teṣām aprāptavyavahārāṇām aṃśān sopacayān suniguptān nidadhyur ā vyavahāraprāpaṇāt atītavyavahārān grāsācchādanair bibhṛyuḥ andhajaḍaklībavyasanivyādhitādīṃś ca akarmiṇaḥ patitatajjātavarjam na patitaiḥ saṃvyavahāro vidyate patitām api tu mātaraṃ bibhṛyād anabhibhāṣamāṇaḥ mātur alaṃkāraṃ duhitaraḥ sāṃpradāyikaṃ labherann anyad vā na striyāḥ svātantryaṃ vidyate athāpy udāharanti pitā rakṣati kaumāre bhartā rakṣati yauvane putras tu sthavirībhāve na strī svātantryam arhatīti nirindriyā hy adāyāś ca striyo matā iti śrutiḥ bhartṛhite yatamānāḥ svargaṃ lokaṃ jayeran vyatikrame kṛcchraḥ śūdre cāndrāyaṇaṃ caret vaiśyādiṣu pratilomaṃ kṛcchrātikṛcchrādīṃś caret puṃsāṃ brāhmaṇādīnāṃ saṃvatsaraṃ brahmacaryam śūdraṃ kaṭāgninā dahet athāpy udāharanti abrāhmaṇasya śārīro daṇḍaḥ saṃgrahaṇe bhavet sarveṣām eva varṇānāṃ dārā rakṣyatamā dhanāt na tu cāraṇadāreṣu na raṅgāvatāre vadhaḥ saṃsarjayanti tā hy etān niguptāṃś cālayanty api striyaḥ pavitram atulaṃ naitā duṣyanti karhicit māsi māsi rajo hy āsāṃ duritāny apakarṣati somaḥ śaucaṃ dadau tāsāṃ gandharvaḥ śikṣitāṃ giram agniś ca sarvabhakṣatvaṃ tasmān niṣkalmaṣāḥ striyaḥ aprajāṃ daśame varṣe strīprajāṃ dvādaśe tyajet mṛtaprajāṃ pañcadaśe sadyas tv apriyavādinīm saṃvatsaraṃ pretapatnī madhumāṃsamadyalavaṇāni varjayed adhaḥ śayīta ṣaṇmāsān iti maudgalyaḥ ata ūrdhvaṃ gurubhir anumatā devarāj janayet putram aputrā athāpy udāharanti vaśā cotpannaputrā ca nīrajaskā gataprajā nākāmā saṃniyojyā syāt phalaṃ yasyāṃ na vidyata iti mātulapitṛsvasā bhaginī bhāgineyī snuṣā mātulānī sakhivadhūr ity agamyāḥ agamyānāṃ gamane kṛcchrātikṛcchrau cāndrāyaṇam iti prāyaścittiḥ etena caṇḍālīvyavāyo vyākhyātaḥ athāpy udāharanti caṇḍālīṃ brāhmaṇo gatvā bhuktvā ca pratigṛhya ca ajñānāt patito vipro jñānāt tu samatāṃ vrajet pitur guror narendrasya bhāryāṃ gatvā pramādataḥ gurutalpī bhavet tena pūrvoktas tasya niṣkraya iti adhyāpanayājanapratigrahair aśaktaḥ kṣatradharmeṇa jīvet pratyanantaratvāt neti gautamaḥ atyugro hi kṣatradharmo brāhmaṇasya athāpy udāharanti gavārthe brāhmaṇārthe vā varṇānāṃ vāpi saṃkare gṛhṇīyātāṃ vipraviśau śastraṃ dharmavyapekṣayā vaiśyavṛttir anuṣṭheyā pratyanantaratvāt prāk prātarāśāt karṣī syāt asyūtanāsikābhyāṃ samuṣkābhyām atudann ārayā muhurmuhur abhyucchandayan bhāryādir agniḥ tasmin karmakaraṇaṃ prāg agnyādheyāt agnyādheyaprabhṛty athemāny ajasrāṇi bhavanti yathaitad agnyādheyam agnihotraṃ darśapūrṇamāsāv āgrayaṇam udagayanadakṣiṇāyanayoḥ paśuś cāturmāsyāny ṛtumukhe ṣaḍḍhotā vasante jyotiṣṭoma ity evaṃ kṣemaprāpaṇam athāpy udāharanti na divāsvapnaśīlena na ca sarvānnabhojinā kāmaṃ śakyaṃ nabho gantum ārūḍhapatitena vā dainyaṃ śāṭhyaṃ jaihmyaṃ ca varjayet athāpy atrośanasaś ca vṛṣaparvaṇaś ca duhitroḥ saṃvāde gāthām udāharanti stuvato duhitā tvaṃ vai yācataḥ pratigṛhṇataḥ athāhaṃ stūyamānasya dadato 'pratigṛhṇataḥ dadato 'pratigṛhṇata iti tapasyam apo'vagāhanam devatās tarpayitvā pitṛtarpaṇam anutīrtham apa utsiñcati ūrjaṃ vahantīr iti athāpy udāharanti sravantīṣv aniruddhāsu trayo varṇā dvijātayaḥ prātarutthāya kurvīran devarṣipitṛtarpaṇam niruddhāsu na kurvīrann aṃśabhāk tatra setukṛt tasmāt parakṛtān setūn kūpāṃś ca parivarjayed iti athāpy udāharanti uddhṛtya vāpi trīn piṇḍān kuryād āpatsu no sadā niruddhāsu tu mṛtpiṇḍān kūpāt trīn abghaṭāṃs tatheti bahupratigrāhyasyāpratigrāhyasya vā pratigṛhyāyājyaṃ vā yājayitvānāśyānnasya vānnam aśitvā taratsamandīyaṃ japed iti athāpy udāharanti gurusaṃkariṇaś caiva śiṣyasaṃkariṇaś ca ye āhāramantrasaṃkīrṇā dīrghaṃ tama upāsata iti atha snātakavratāni sāyaṃ prātar yad aśanīyaṃ syāt tenānnena vaiśvadevaṃ balim upahṛtya brāhmaṇakṣatriyaviṭśūdrān abhyāgatān yathāśakti pūjayet yadi bahūnāṃ na śaknuyād ekasmai guṇavate dadyāt yo vā prathamam upagataḥ syāt śūdraś ced āgatas taṃ karmaṇi niyuñjyāt śrotriyāya vāgraṃ dadyāt ye nityā bhāktikāḥ syus teṣām anuparodhena saṃvibhāgo vihitaḥ na tv eva kadācid adattvā bhuñjīta athāpy atrānnagītau ślokāv udāharanti yo mām adattvā pitṛdevatābhyo bhṛtyātithīnāṃ ca suhṛjjanasya sampannam aśnan viṣam atti mohāt tam admy ahaṃ tasya ca mṛtyur asmi hutāgnihotraḥ kṛtavaiśvadevaḥ pūjyātithīn bhṛtyajanāvaśiṣṭam tuṣṭaḥ śuciḥ śraddadhad atti yo māṃ tasyāmṛtaṃ syāṃ sa ca māṃ bhunakti subrāhmaṇaśrotriyavedapāragebhyo gurvarthaniveśauṣadhārthavṛttikṣīṇayakṣyamāṇādhyayanādhvasaṃyogavaiśvajiteṣu dravyasaṃvibhāgo yathāśakti kāryo bahirvedi bhikṣamāṇeṣu kṛtānnam itareṣu suprakṣālitapādapāṇir ācāntaḥ śucau saṃvṛte deśe 'nnam upahṛtam upasaṃgṛhya kāmakrodhadrohalobhamohān apahatya sarvābhir aṅgulībhiḥ śabdam akurvan prāśnīyāt na piṇḍaśeṣaṃ pātryām utsṛjet māṃsamatsyatilasaṃsṛṣṭaprāśane 'pa upaspṛśyāgnim abhimṛśet astamite ca snānam pālāśam āsanaṃ pāduke dantadhāvanam iti varjayet notsaṅge 'nnaṃ bhakṣayet āsandyāṃ na bhuñjīta vaiṇavaṃ daṇḍaṃ dhārayed rukmakuṇḍale ca padā pādasya prakṣālanam adhiṣṭhānaṃ ca varjayet na bahirmālāṃ dhārayet sūryam udayāstamaye na nirīkṣeta nendradhanur iti parasmai prabrūyāt yadi brūyān maṇidhanur ity eva brūyāt puradvārīndrakīlaparighāv antareṇa nātīyāt pleṅkhayor antareṇa na gacchet vatsatantīṃ ca nopari gacchet bhasmāsthiromatuṣakapālāpasnānāni nādhitiṣṭhet gāṃ dhayantīṃ na parasmai prabrūyāt nādhenum adhenur iti brūyāt yadi brūyād dhenuṃ bhavyety eva brūyāt śuktā rūkṣāḥ paruṣā vāco na brūyāt naiko 'dhvānaṃ vrajet na patitair na striyā na śūdreṇa na pratisāyaṃ vrajet na nagnaḥ snāyāt na naktaṃ snāyāt na nadīṃ bāhukas taret na kūpam avekṣeta na gartam avekṣeta na tatropaviśed yata enam anya utthāpayet panthā deyo brāhmaṇāya gave rājñe hy acakṣuṣe vṛddhāya bhārataptāya garbhiṇyai durbalāya ca prabhūtaidhodakayavasasamitkuśamālyopaniṣkramaṇam āḍhyajanākulam analasasamṛddham āryajanabhūyiṣṭham adasyupraveśyaṃ grāmam āvasituṃ yateta dhārmikaḥ udapānodake grāme brāhmaṇo vṛṣalīpatiḥ uṣitvā dvādaśa samāḥ śūdrasādharmyam ṛcchati purareṇukuṇṭhitaśarīras tatparipūrṇanetravadanaś ca nagare vasan suniyatātmā siddhim avāpsyatīti na tad asti rathāśvagajadhānyānāṃ gavāṃ caiva rajaḥ śubham apraśastaṃ samūhanyāḥ śvājāvikharavāsasām pūjyān pūjayet ṛṣividvannṛpavaramātulaśvaśuraṛtvijaḥ ete 'rghyāḥ śāstravihitāḥ smṛtāḥ kālavibhāgaśaḥ ṛṣividvannṛpāḥ prāptāḥ kriyārambhe varartvijau mātulaśvaśurau pūjyau saṃvatsaragatāgatāv iti agnyagāre gavāṃ madhye brāhmaṇānāṃ ca saṃnidhau svādhyāye bhojane caiva dakṣiṇaṃ bāhum uddharet uttaraṃ vāsaḥ kartavyaṃ pañcasv eteṣu karmasu svādhyāyotsargadāneṣu bhojanācāmayos tathā havanaṃ bhojanaṃ dānam upahāraḥ pratigrahaḥ bahirjānu na kāryāṇi tadvad ācamanaṃ smṛtam anne śritāni bhūtāni annaṃ prāṇam iti śrutiḥ tasmād annaṃ pradātavyam annaṃ hi paramaṃ haviḥ hutena śāmyate pāpaṃ hutam annena śāmyati annaṃ dakṣiṇayā śāntim upayātīti naḥ śrutiḥ upayātīti naḥ śrutir iti athātaḥ saṃdhyopāsanavidhiṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ tīrthaṃ gatvāprayato 'bhiṣiktaḥ prayato vānabhiṣiktaḥ prakṣālitapādapāṇir apa ācamya surabhimatyābliṅgābhir vāruṇībhir hiraṇyavarṇābhiḥ pāvamānībhir vyāhṛtibhir anyaiś ca pavitrair ātmānaṃ prokṣya prayato bhavati athāpy udāharanti apo'vagāhanaṃ snānaṃ vihitaṃ sārvavarṇikam mantravatprokṣaṇaṃ cāpi dvijātīnāṃ viśiṣyata iti sarvakarmaṇāṃ caivārambheṣu prāk saṃdhyopāsanakālāc caitenaiva pavitrasamūhenātmānaṃ prokṣya prayato bhavati athāpy udāharanti darbheṣv āsīno darbhān dhārayamāṇaḥ sodakena pāṇinā pratyaṅmukhaḥ sāvitrīṃ sahasrakṛtva āvartayet prāṇāyāmaśo vā śatakṛtvaḥ ubhayataḥpraṇavāṃ sasaptavyāhṛtikāṃ manasā vā daśakṛtvaḥ tribhiś ca prāṇāyāmais tānto brahmahṛdayena vāruṇībhyāṃ rātrim upatiṣṭhate imaṃ me varuṇa tat tvā yāmīti dvābhyām evam eva prātaḥ prāṅmukhas tiṣṭhan maitrībhyām ahar upatiṣṭhate mitrasya carṣaṇīdhṛtaḥ mitro janān yātayatīti dvābhyām supūrvām api pūrvām upakramyodita āditye samāpnuyāt anastamita upakramya supaścād api paścimām saṃdhyayoś ca saṃpattāv ahorātrayoś ca saṃtatyai api cātra prajāpatigītau ślokau bhavataḥ anāgatāṃ tu ye pūrvām anatītāṃ tu paścimām saṃdhyāṃ nopāsate viprāḥ kathaṃ te brāhmaṇāḥ smṛtāḥ sāyaṃ prātaḥ sadā saṃdhyāṃ ye viprā no upāsate kāmaṃ tān dhārmiko rājā śūdrakarmasu yojayed iti tatra sāyamatikrame rātryupavāsaḥ prātaratikrame 'harupavāsaḥ sthānāsanaphalam avāpnoti athāpy udāharanti yad upasthakṛtaṃ pāpaṃ padbhyāṃ vā yat kṛtaṃ bhavet bāhubhyāṃ manasā vāpi vācā vā yat kṛtaṃ bhavet sāyaṃ saṃdhyām upasthāya tena tasmāt pramucyate rātryā cāpi saṃdhīyate na cainaṃ varuṇo gṛhṇāti evam eva prātar upasthāya rātrikṛtāt pāpāt pramucyate ahnā cāpi saṃdhīyate mitraś cainaṃ gopāyaty ādityaś cainaṃ svargaṃ lokam unnayati sa evam evāharahar ahorātrayoḥ saṃdhiṣūpatiṣṭhamāno brahmapūto brahmabhūto brāhmaṇaḥ śāstram anuvartamāno brahmalokam abhijayatīti vijñāyate brahmalokam abhijayatīti vijñāyate atha hastau prakṣālya kamaṇḍaluṃ mṛtpiṇḍaṃ ca saṃgṛhya tīrthaṃ gatvā triḥ pādau prakṣālayate trir ātmānaṃ atha haike bruvate śmaśānam āpo devagṛhaṃ goṣṭhaṃ yatra ca brāhmaṇā aprakṣālya pādau tan na praveṣṭavyam iti athāpo 'bhiprapadyate hiraṇyaśṛṅgaṃ varuṇaṃ prapadye tīrthaṃ me dehi yācitaḥ yan mayā bhuktam asādhūnāṃ pāpebhyaś ca pratigrahaḥ yan me manasā vācā karmaṇā vā duṣkṛtaṃ kṛtam tan na indro varuṇo bṛhaspatiḥ savitā ca punantu punaḥpunar iti athāñjalināpa upahanti sumitrā na āpa oṣadhayaḥ santv iti tāṃ diśaṃ nirukṣati yasyām asya diśi dveṣyo bhavati durmitrās tasmai bhūyāsur yo 'smān dveṣṭi yaṃ ca vayaṃ dviṣma iti athāpa upaspṛśya triḥ pradakṣiṇam udakam āvartayati yad apāṃ krūraṃ yad amedhyaṃ yad aśāntaṃ tad apagacchatād iti apsu nimajjyonmajjya nāpsu sataḥ prayamaṇaṃ vidyate na vāsaḥpalpūlanaṃ nopasparśanam yady uparuddhāḥ syur etenopatiṣṭhate namo 'gnaye 'psumate nama indrāya namo varuṇāya namo vāruṇyai namo 'dbhya iti uttīryācamyācāntaḥ punar ācāmet āpaḥ punantu pṛthivīṃ pṛthivī pūtā punātu mām punantu brahmaṇaspatir brahma pūtā punātu mām yad ucchiṣṭam abhojyaṃ yad vā duścaritaṃ mama sarvaṃ punantu mām āpo 'satāṃ pitṛyajño bhūtayajño manuṣyayajño brahmayajña iti aharahaḥ svāhākuryād ā kāṣṭhāt tathaitaṃ devayajñaṃ samāpnoti aharahaḥ svadhākuryād odapātrāt tathaitaṃ pitṛyajñaṃ samāpnoti aharahar namaskuryād ā puṣpebhyaḥ tathaitam bhūtayajñaṃ samāpnoti aharahar brāhmaṇebhyo 'nnaṃ dadyād ā mūlaphalaśākebhyaḥ tathaitaṃ manuṣyayajñaṃ samāpnoti aharahaḥ svādhyāyaṃ kuryād ā praṇavāt tathaitaṃ brahmayajñaṃ samāpnoti svādhyāyo vai brahmayajñaḥ tasya ha vā etasya brahmayajñasya vāg eva juhūr mana upabhṛc cakṣur dhruvā medhā sruvaḥ satyam avabhṛthaḥ svargo loka udayanam yāvantaṃ ha vā imāṃ vittasya pūrṇāṃ dadat svargaṃ lokaṃ jayati tāvantaṃ lokaṃ jayati bhūyāṃsaṃ cākṣayyaṃ cāpa punarmṛtyuṃ jayati ya evaṃ vidvān svādhyāyam adhīte tasmāt svādhyāyo 'dhyetavya iti hi brāhmaṇam athāpy udāharanti svabhyaktaḥ suhitaḥ sukhe śayane śayāno yaṃ yaṃ kratum adhīte tena tenāsyeṣṭaṃ bhavatīti tasya ha vā etasya dharmasya caturdhā bhedam eka āhuḥ adṛṣṭatvāt ye catvāra iti karmavādaḥ aiṣṭikapāśukasaumikadārvihomāṇām tad eṣābhivadati ye catvāraḥ pathayo devayānā antarā dyāvāpṛthivī viyanti teṣāṃ yo ajyānim ajītim āvahāt tasmai no devāḥ pari datteha sarva iti brahmacārī gṛhastho vānaprasthaḥ parivrājaka iti brahmacārī guruśuśrūṣyā maraṇāt vānaprastho vaikhānasaśāstrasamudācāraḥ vaikhānaso vane mūlaphalāśī tapaḥśīlaḥ savaneṣūdakam upaspṛśañśrāmaṇakenāgnim ādhāyāgrāmyabhojī devapitṛbhūtamanuṣyaṛṣipūjakaḥ sarvātithiḥ pratiṣiddhavarjaṃ bhaikṣam apy upayuñjīta na phālakṛṣṭam adhitiṣṭhed grāmaṃ ca na praviśet jaṭilaś cīrājinavāsā nātisāṃvatsaraṃ bhuñjīta parivrājakaḥ parityajya bandhūn aparigrahaḥ pravrajed yathāvidhi araṇyaṃ gatvā śikhāmuṇḍaḥ kaupīnācchādanaḥ varṣāsv ekasthaḥ kāṣāyavāsāḥ sannamusale vyaṅgāre nivṛttaśarāvasaṃpāte bhikṣeta vāṅmanaḥkarmadaṇḍair bhūtānām adrohī pavitraṃ bibhracchaucārtham uddhṛtaparipūtābhir adbhir apkāryaṃ kurvāṇaḥ apavidhya vaidikāni karmāṇy ubhayataḥ paricchinnā madhyamaṃ padaṃ saṃśliṣyāmaha iti vadantaḥ aikāśramyaṃ tv ācāryā aprajananatvād itareṣām tatrodāharanti prāhlādir ha vai kapilo nāmāsura āsa sa etān bhedāṃś cakāra devaiḥ spardhamānaḥ tān manīṣī nādriyeta adṛṣṭatvāt ye catvāra iti karmavāda aiṣṭikapāśukasaumikadārvihomāṇām tad eṣābhyanūcyate eṣa nityo mahimā brāhmaṇasya na karmaṇā vardhate no kanīyān tasyaivātmā padavit taṃ viditvā na karmaṇā lipyate pāpakeneti sa brūyāt yena sūryas tapati tejaseddhaḥ pitā putreṇa pitṛmān yoniyonau nāvedavin manute taṃ bṛhantaṃ sarvānubhūm ātmānaṃ saṃparāya iti ime ye nārvāṅ na paraś caranti na brāhmaṇāso na sutekarāsaḥ ta ete vācam abhipadya pāpayā sirīs tantraṃ tanvate aprajajñaya iti prajābhir agne amṛtatvam aśyām jāyamāno vai brāhmaṇas tribhir ṛṇavā jāyate brahmacaryeṇarṣibhyo yajñena devebhyaḥ prajayā pitṛbhya iti evam ṛṇasaṃyogavādinyo 'saṃkhyeyā havanti trayīṃ vidyāṃ brahmacaryaṃ prajātiṃ śraddhāṃ tapo yajñam anupradānam ya etāni kurvate tair it saha smo rajo bhūtvā dhvaṃsate 'nyat praśaṃsann iti dhvaṃsate 'nyat praśaṃsann iti atha śālīnayāyāvarāṇām ātmayājināṃ prāṇāhutīr vyākhyāsyāmaḥ sarvāvaśyakāvasāne saṃmṛṣṭopalipte deśe prāṅmukha upaviśya tad bhūtam āhriyamāṇam bhūr bhuvaḥ suvar om iti upasthāya vācaṃ yacchet nyastam annaṃ mahāvyāhṛtibhiḥ pradakṣiṇam udakaṃ pariṣicya savyena pāṇināvimuñcan amṛtopastaraṇam asīti purastād apaḥ pītvā pañcānnena prāṇāhutīr juhoti prāṇe niviṣṭo 'mṛtaṃ juhomi śivo māviśāpradāhāya prāṇāya svāhā apāne niviṣṭo 'mṛtaṃ juhomi śivo mā viśāpradāhāya apānāya svāhā vyāne niviṣṭo 'mṛtaṃ juhomi śivo mā viśāpradāhāya vyānāya svāhā udāne niviṣṭo 'mṛtaṃ juhomi śivo mā viśāpradāhāya udānāya svāhā samāne niviṣṭo 'mṛtaṃ juhomi śivo mā viśāpradāhāya samānāya svāheti pañcānnena prāṇāhutīr hutvā tūṣṇīṃ bhūyo vratayet prajāpatiṃ manasā dhyāyan nāntarā vācaṃ visṛjet yady antarā vācaṃ visṛjet bhūr bhuvaḥ suvar om iti japitvā punar eva bhuñjīta tvakkeśanakhakīṭākhupurīṣāṇi dṛṣṭvā taṃ deśaṃ piṇḍam uddhṛtyādbhir abhyukṣya bhasmāvakīrya punar adbhiḥ prokṣya vācā ca praśastam upayuñjīta athāpy udāharanti āsīnaḥ prāṅmukho 'śnīyād vāgyato 'nnam akutsayan askandayaṃs tanmanāś ca bhuktvā cāgnim upaspṛśed iti sarvabhakṣyāpūpakandamūlaphalamāṃsāni dantair nāvadyet nātisuhitaḥ amṛtāpidhānam asīti upariṣṭād apaḥ pītvācānto hṛdayadeśam abhimṛśati prāṇānāṃ granthir asi rudro mā viśāntakaḥ tenānnenāpyāyasveti punar ācamya dakṣiṇe pādāṅguṣṭhe pāṇī nisrāvayati aṅguṣṭhamātraḥ puruṣo 'ṅguṣṭhaṃ ca samāśritaḥ īśaḥ sarvasya jagataḥ prabhuḥ prīṇāti viśvabhug iti hutānumantraṇam ūrdhvahastaḥ samācaret śraddhāyāṃ prāṇe niviśyāmṛtaṃ hutam prāṇam annenāpyāyasva śraddhāyām apāne niviśyāmṛtaṃ hutam prāṇam annenāpyāyasva śraddhāyāṃ vyāne niviśyāmṛtaṃ hutam prāṇam annenāpyāyasva śraddhāyām udāne niviśyāmṛtaṃ hutam prāṇam annenāpyāyasva śraddhāyāṃ samāne niviśyāmṛtaṃ hutam prāṇam annenāpyāyasveti pañcabhiḥ brahmaṇi ma ātmāmṛtatvāyeti akṣareṇa cātmānaṃ yojayet sarvakratuyājinām ātmayājī viśiṣyate athāpy udāharanti yathā hi tūlam aiṣīkam agnau protaṃ pradīpyate tadvat sarvāṇi pāpāni dahyante hy ātmayājinaḥ kevalāgho bhavati kevalādī mogham annaṃ vindate apracetā iti sa evam evāharahaḥ sāyaṃ prātar juhuyāt adbhir vā sāyam athāpy udāharanti agre bhojayed atithīn antarvatnīr anantaram bālavṛddhāṃs tathā dīnān vyādhitāṃś ca viśeṣataḥ adattvā tu ya etebhyaḥ pūrvaṃ bhuṅkte yathāvidhi bhujyamāno na jānāti na sa bhuṅkte sa bhujyate pitṛdaivatabhṛtyānāṃ mātāpitror guros tathā vāgyato vighasam aśnīyād evaṃ dharmo vidhīyata iti athāpy udāharanti aṣṭau grāsā muner bhakṣyāḥ ṣoḍaśāraṇyavāsinaḥ dvātriṃśat tu gṛhasthasyāmitaṃ brahmacāriṇaḥ āhitāgnir anaḍvāṃś ca brahmacārī ca te trayaḥ aśnanta eva sidhyanti naiṣāṃ siddhir anaśnatām iti gṛhastho brahmacārī vā yo 'naśnaṃs tu tapaś caret prāṇāgnihotralopena avakīrṇī bhavet tu saḥ anyatra prāyaścittāt prāyaścitte tad eva vidhānam athāpy udāharanti antarā prātarāśaṃ ca sāyamāśaṃ tathaiva ca sadopavāsī bhavati yo na bhuṅkte kadācana prāṇāgnihotramantrāṃs tu niruddhe bhojane japet tretāgnihotramantrāṃs tu dravyālābhe yathā japed iti evam ācaran brahmabhūyāya kalpate brahmabhūyāya kalpata iti pitryam āyuṣyaṃ svargyaṃ yaśasyaṃ puṣṭikarma ca trimadhus triṇāciketas trisuparṇaḥ pañcāgniḥ ṣaḍaṅgavicchīrṣako jyeṣṭhasāmakaḥ snātaka iti paṅktipāvanāḥ tadabhāve rahasyavit ṛco yajūṃṣi sāmānīti śrāddhasya mahimā tasmād evaṃvidaṃ sapiṇḍam apy āśayet rākṣoghnāni ca sāmāni svadhāvanti yajūṃṣi ca madhvṛco 'tha pavitrāṇi śrāvayed āśayañśanaiḥ caraṇavato 'nūcānān yonigotramantrāsaṃbaddhāñ śucīn mantravatas tryavarān ayujaḥ pūrvedyuḥ prātar eva vā nimantrya sadarbhopakᄆpteṣv āsaneṣu prāṅmukhān upaveśayaty udaṅmukhān vā athaināṃs tilamiśrā apaḥ pratigrāhya gandhair mālyaiś cālaṃkṛtya agnau kariṣyāmīti anujñāto 'gnim upasamādhāya saṃparistīryāgnimukhāt kṛtvānnasyaiva tisra āhutīr juhoti somāya pitṛpītāya svadhā namaḥ svāhā yamāyāṅgirasvate pitṛmate svadhā namaḥ svāhā agnaye kavyavāhanāya sviṣṭakṛte svadhā namaḥ svāheti taccheṣeṇānnam abhighāryānnasyaitā eva tisro juhuyāt vayasāṃ piṇḍaṃ dadyāt vayasāṃ hi pitaraḥ pratimayā carantīti vijñāyate athetarat sāṅguṣṭhena pāṇinābhimṛśati pṛthivīsamantasya te 'gnir upadraṣṭarcas te mahimā dattasyāpramādāya pṛthivī te pātraṃ dyaur apidhānaṃ brahmaṇas tvā mukhe juhomi brāhmaṇānāṃ tvā vidyāvatāṃ prāṇāpānayor juhomy akṣitam asi mā pitṝṇāṃ kṣeṣṭhā amutrāmuṣmiṃl loka iti antarikṣasamantasya te vāyur upaśrotā yajūṃṣi te mahimā dattasyāpramādāya pṛthivī te pātraṃ dyaur apidhānaṃ brahmaṇas tvā mukhe juhomi brāhmaṇānāṃ tvā vidyāvatāṃ prāṇāpānayor juhomy akṣitam asi mā pitāmahānāṃ kṣeṣṭhā amutrāmuṣmiṃl loka iti dyusamantasya ta ādityo 'nukhyātā sāmāni te mahimā dattasyāpramādāya pṛthivī te pātraṃ dyaur apidhānaṃ brahmaṇas tvā mukhe juhomi brāhmaṇānāṃ tvā vidyāvatāṃ prāṇāpānayor juhomy akṣitam asi mā prapitāmahānāṃ kṣeṣṭhā amutrāmuṣmiṃl loka iti atha vai bhavati agnau karaṇaśeṣeṇa tad annam abhighārayet niraṅguṣṭhaṃ tu yad dattaṃ na tat prīṇāti vai pitṝn ubhayoḥ śākhayor muktaṃ pitṛbhyo 'nnaṃ niveditam tad antaram upāsante asurā duṣṭacetasaḥ yātudhānāḥ piśācāś ca pratilumpanti taddhaviḥ tiladāne hy adāyāś ca tathā krodhavaśe 'surāḥ kāṣāyavāsā yān kurute japahomapratigrahān na tad devaṃgamaṃ bhavati havyakavyeṣu yaddhaviḥ yac ca dattam anaṅguṣṭhaṃ yac caiva pratigṛhyate ācāmati ca yas tiṣṭhan na sa tena samṛdhyata iti ādyantayor apāṃ pradānaṃ sarvatra jayaprabhṛti yathāvidhānam śeṣam uktam aṣṭakāhome dvau daive pitṛkārye trīn ekaikam ubhayatra vā bhojayet susamṛddho 'pi na prasajyeta vistare satkriyāṃ deśakālau ca śaucaṃ brāhmaṇasaṃpadam pañcaitān vistaro hanti tasmāt taṃ parivarjayet urastaḥ pitaras tasya vāmataś ca pitāmahāḥ dakṣiṇataḥ prapitāmahāḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ piṇḍatarkakā iti prajākāmasyopadeśaḥ prajanananimittā samākhyety aśvināv ūcatuḥ āyuṣā tapasā yuktaḥ svādhyāyejyāparāyaṇaḥ prajām utpādayed yuktaḥ sve sve varṇe jitendriyaḥ brāhmaṇasyarṇasaṃyogas tribhir bhavati janmataḥ tāni mucyātmavān bhavati vimukto dharmasaṃśayāt svādhyāyenarṣīn pūjya somena ca puraṃdaram prajayā ca pitṝn pūrvān anṛṇo divi modate putreṇa lokāñ jayati pautreṇānantyam aśnute atha putrasya pautreṇa nākam evādhirohatīti vijñāyate ca jāyamāno vai brāhmaṇas tribhir ṛṇavā jāyate brahmacaryeṇarṣibhyo yajñena devebhyaḥ prajayā pitṛbhya iti evam ṛṇasaṃyogaṃ vedo darśayati satputram utpādyātmānaṃ tārayati saptāvarān sapta pūrvān ṣaḍ anyān ātmasaptamān satputram adhigacchānas tārayaty enaso bhayāt tasmāt prajāsaṃtānam utpādya phalam avāpnoti tasmād yatnavān prajām utpādayet auṣadhamantrasaṃyogena tasyopadeśaḥ śrutisāmānyenopadiśyate sarvavarṇebhyaḥ phalavattvād iti phalavattvād iti athātaḥ saṃnyāsavidhiṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ so 'ta eva brahmacaryavān pravrajatīty ekeṣām atha śālīnayāyāvarāṇām anapatyānām vidhuro vā prajāḥ svadharme pratiṣṭhāpya vā saptatyā ūrdhvaṃ saṃnyāsam upadiśanti vānaprasthasya vā karmavirāme eṣa nityo mahimā brāhmaṇasya na karmaṇā vardhate no kanīyān tasyaivātmā padavit taṃ viditvā na karmaṇā lipyate pāpakeneti apunarbhavaṃ nayatīti nityaḥ mahad enaṃ gamayatīti mahimā keśaśmaśrulomanakhāni vāpayitvopakalpayate yaṣṭayaḥ śikyaṃ jalapavitraṃ kamaṇḍaluṃ pātram iti etat samādāya grāmānte grāmasīmānte 'gnyagāre vājyaṃ payo dadhīti trivṛt prāśyopavaset apo vā oṃ bhūḥ sāvitrīṃ praviśāmi tat savitur vareṇyam oṃ bhuvaḥ sāvitrīṃ praviśāmi bhargo devasya dhīmahi oṃ suvaḥ sāvitrīṃ praviśāmi dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayād iti paccho 'rdharcaśas tataḥ samastayā ca vyastayā ca ātmānam ātmana āśramād āśramam upanīya brahmapūto bhavatīti vijñāyate athāpy udāharanti āśramād āśramaṃ gatvā hutahomo jitendriyaḥ bhikṣābalipariśrāntaḥ paścād bhavati bhikṣuka iti sa eṣa bhikṣur ānantyāya purādityasyāstamayād gārhapatyam upasamādhāyānvāhāryapacanam āhṛtya jvalantam āhavanīyam uddhṛtya gārhapatya ājyaṃ vilāpyotpūya sruci caturgṛhītaṃ gṛhītvā samidvaty āhavanīye pūrṇāhutiṃ juhoti oṃ svāheti etad brahmānvādhānam iti vijñāyate atha sāyaṃ hute 'gnihotra uttareṇa gārhapatyaṃ tṛṇāni saṃstīrya teṣu dvaṃdvaṃ nyañci pātrāṇi sādayitvā dakṣiṇenāhavanīyaṃ brahmāyatane darbhān saṃstīrya teṣu kṛṣṇājinaṃ cāntardhāyaitāṃ rātriṃ jāgarti ya evaṃ vidvān brahmarātrim upoṣya brāhmaṇo 'gnīn samāropya pramīyate sarvaṃ pāpmānaṃ tarati tarati brahmahatyām atha brāhme muhūrta utthāya kāla eva prātaragnihotraṃ juhoti atha pṛṣṭhyāṃ stīrtvāpaḥ praṇīya vaiśvānaraṃ dvādaśakapālaṃ nirvapati sā prasiddheṣṭiḥ saṃtiṣṭhate āhavanīye 'gnihotrapātrāṇi prakṣipaty amṛnmayāny anaśmamayāni gārhapatye 'raṇī bhavataṃ naḥ samanasāv iti ātmany agnīn samāropayate yā te agne yajñiyā tanūr iti tris trir ekaikaṃ samājighrati athāntarvedi tiṣṭhan oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ suvaḥ saṃnyastaṃ mayā saṃnyastaṃ mayā saṃnyastaṃ mayeti trir upāṃśūktvā trir uccaiḥ triṣatyā hi devā iti vijñāyate abhayaṃ sarvabhūtebhyo matta iti cāpāṃ pūrṇam añjaliṃ ninayati athāpy udāharanti abhayaṃ sarvabhūtebhyo dattvā yaś carate muniḥ na tasya sarvabhūtebhyo bhayaṃ cāpīha jāyata iti sa vācaṃyamo bhavati sakhā mā gopāyeti daṇḍam ādatte yad asya pāre rajasa iti śikyaṃ gṛhṇāti yena devāḥ pavitreṇeti jalapavitraṃ gṛhṇāti yena devā jyotiṣordhvā udāyann iti kamaṇḍaluṃ gṛhṇāti saptavyāhṛtibhiḥ pātraṃ gṛhṇāti yaṣṭayaḥ śikyaṃ jalapavitraṃ kamaṇḍaluṃ pātram ity etat samādāya yatrāpas tatra gatvā snātvāpa ācamya surabhimatyābliṅgābhir vāruṇībhir hiraṇyavarṇābhiḥ pāvamānībhir iti mārjayitvāntarjalagato 'ghamarṣaṇena ṣoḍaśa prāṇāyāmān dhārayitvottīrya vāsaḥ pīḍayitvānyat prayataṃ vāsaḥ paridhāyāpa ācamya oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ suvar iti jalapavitram ādāya tarpayati oṃ bhūs tarpayāmi oṃ bhuvas tarpayāmi oṃ suvas tarpayāmi oṃ mahas tarpayāmi oṃ janas tarpayāmi oṃ tapas tarpayāmi oṃ satyaṃ tarpayāmīti devavat pitṛbhyo 'ñjalim ādāya oṃ bhūḥ svadhā oṃ bhuvaḥ svadhā oṃ suvaḥ svadhā oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ suvar mahar nama iti atha ud u tyam citram iti dvābhyām ādityam upatiṣṭhate om iti brahma brahma vā eṣa jyotir ya eṣa tapaty eṣa vedo ya eṣa tapati vedyam evaitad ya eṣa tapati evam evaiṣa ātmānaṃ tarpayati ātmane namaskaroti ātmā brahmātmā jyotiḥ sāvitrīṃ sahasrakṛtva āvartayecchatakṛtvo 'parimitakṛtvo vā oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ suvar iti jalapavitram ādāyāpo gṛhṇāti nāta ūrdhvam anuddhṛtābhir adbhir aparisrutābhir aparipūtābhir vācāmet na cāta ūrdhvaṃ śuklaṃ vāso dhārayet ekadaṇḍī tridaṇḍī vā athemāni vratāni bhavanti ahiṃsā satyam astainyaṃ maithunasya ca varjanam tyāga ity eva pañcaivopavratāni bhavanti akrodho guruśuśrūṣāpramādaḥ śaucam āhāraśuddhiś ceti atha bhaikṣacaryā brāhmaṇānāṃ śālīnayāyāvarāṇām apavṛtte vaiśvadeve bhikṣāṃ lipseta bhavatpūrvāṃ pracodayet godohamātram ākāṅkṣet atha bhaikṣacaryād upāvṛtya śucau deśe nyasya hastapādān prakṣālyādityasyāgre nivedayet ud u tyam citram iti brahmaṇe nivedayate brahma jajñānam iti vijñāyate ādhānaprabhṛti yajamāna evāgnayo bhavanti tasya prāṇo gārhapatyo 'pāno 'nvāhāryapacano vyāna āhavanīya udānasamānau sabhyāvasathyau pañca vā ete 'gnaya ātmasthāḥ ātmany eva juhoti sa eṣa ātmayajña ātmaniṣṭha ātmapratiṣṭha ātmānaṃ kṣemaṃ nayatīti vijñāyate bhūtebhyo dayāpūrvaṃ saṃvibhajya śeṣam adbhiḥ saṃspṛśyauṣadhavat prāśnīyāt prāśyāpa ācamya jyotiṣmatyādityam upatiṣṭhate ud vayaṃ tamasas parīti vāṅ ma āsan nasoḥ prāṇa iti japitvā ayācitam asaṃkᄆptam upapannaṃ yadṛcchayā āhāramātraṃ bhuñjīta kevalaṃ prāṇayātrikam iti athāpy udāharanti aṣṭau grāsā muner bhakṣyāḥ ṣoḍaśāraṇyavāsinaḥ dvātriṃśat tu gṛhasthasya amitaṃ brahmacāriṇaḥ bhaikṣaṃ vā sarvavarṇebhya ekānnaṃ vā dvijātiṣu api vā sarvavarṇebhyo na caikānnaṃ dvijātiṣv iti atha yatropaniṣadam ācāryā bruvate tatrodāharanti sthānamaunavīrāsanasavanopasparśanacaturthaṣaṣṭhāṣṭamakālavratayuktasya kaṇapiṇyākayāvakadadhipayovratatvaṃ ceti tatra maune yuktas traividyavṛddhair ācāryair munibhir anyair vāśramibhir bahuśrutair dantair dantān saṃdhāyāntarmukha eva yāvadarthasaṃbhāṣī na strībhir na yatra lopo bhavatīti vijñāyate sthānamaunavīrāsanānām anyatamena saṃprayogaḥ na trayaṃ saṃnipātayet yatra gataś ca yāvanmātram anuvratayed āpatsu na yatra lopo bhavatīti vijñāyate sthānamaunavīrāsanasavanopasparśanacaturthaṣaṣṭhāṣṭamakālavratayuktasya aṣṭau tāny avrataghnāni āpo mūlaṃ ghṛtaṃ payaḥ havir brāhmaṇakāmyā ca guror vacanam auṣadham iti sāyaṃ prātar agnihotramantrāñ japet vāruṇībhiḥ sāyaṃ saṃdhyām upasthāya maitrībhiḥ prātaḥ anagnir aniketaḥ syād aśarmāśaraṇo muniḥ bhaikṣārthī grāmam anvicchet svādhyāye vācam utsṛjed iti vijñāyate ca parimitā vā ṛcaḥ parimitāni sāmāni parimitāni yajūṃṣi athaitasyaivānto nāsti yad brahma tat pratigṛṇata ācakṣīta sa pratigara iti evam evaiṣa ā śarīravimokṣaṇād vṛkṣamūliko vedasaṃnyāsī vedo vṛkṣaḥ tasya mūlaṃ praṇavaḥ praṇavātmako vedaḥ praṇavaṃ dhyāyan sapraṇavo brahmabhūyāya kalpata iti hovāca prajāpatiḥ saptavyāhṛtibhir brahmabhājanaṃ prakṣālayed iti prakṣālayed iti atha śālīnayāyāvaracakracaradharmakāṅkṣiṇāṃ navabhir vṛttibhir vartamānānām teṣāṃ tadvartanād vṛttir ity ucyate śālāśrayatvācchālīnatvam vṛttyā varayā yātīti yāyāvaratvam anukrameṇa caraṇāc cakracaratvam tā anuvyākhyāsyāmaḥ ṣaṇṇivartanī kauddālī dhruvā saṃprakṣālanī samūhā pālanī śiloñchā kāpotā siddheccheti navaitāḥ tāsām eva vānyāpi daśamī vṛttir bhavati ā navavṛtteḥ keśaśmaśrulomanakhāni vāpayitvopakalpayate kṛṣṇājinaṃ kamaṇḍaluṃ yaṣṭiṃ vīvadhaṃ kutapahāram iti traidhātavīyeneṣṭvā prasthāsyati vaiśvānaryā vā atha prātar udita āditye yathāsūtram agnīn prajvālya gārhapatya ājyaṃ vilāpyotpūya sruksruvaṃ niṣṭapya saṃmṛjya sruci caturgṛhītaṃ gṛhītvāhavanīye vāstoṣpatīyaṃ juhoti vāstoṣpate prati jānīhy asmān iti puronuvākyām anūcya vāstoṣpate śagmayā saṃsadā ta iti yājyayā juhoti sarva evāhitāgnir ity eke yāyāvara ity eke nirgatya grāmānte grāmasīmānte vāvatiṣṭhate tatra kuṭīṃ maṭhaṃ vā karoti kṛtaṃ vā praviśati kṛṣṇājinādīnām upakᄆptānāṃ yasminn arthe yena yena yatprayojanaṃ tena tena tat kuryāt prasiddham agnīnāṃ paricaraṇam prasiddhaṃ darśapūrṇamāsābhyāṃ yajanam prasiddhaḥ pañcānāṃ mahatāṃ yajñānām anuprayogaḥ utpannānām oṣadhīnāṃ nirvāpaṇaṃ dṛṣṭaṃ bhavati viśvebhyo devebhyo juṣṭaṃ nirvapāmīti vā tūṣṇīṃ vā tāḥ saṃskṛtya sādhayati tasyādhyāpanayājanapratigrahā nivartante 'nye ca yajñakratava iti haviṣyaṃ ca vratopāyanīyaṃ dṛṣṭaṃ bhavati tad yathā sarpirmiśraṃ dadhimiśram akṣāralavaṇam apiśitam aparyuṣitam brahmacaryam ṛtau vā gacchati parvaṇi parvaṇi keśaśmaśrulomanakhavāpanaṃ śaucavidhiś ca athāpy udāharanti śrūyate dvividhaṃ śaucaṃ yacchiṣṭaiḥ paryupāsitam bāhyaṃ nirlepanirgandham antaḥśaucam ahiṃsakam adbhiḥ śudhyanti gātrāṇi buddhir jñānena śudhyati ahiṃsayā ca bhūtātmā manaḥ satyena śudhyatīti yatho etat ṣaṇṇivartanīti ṣaḍ eva nivartanāni nirupahatāni karoti svāmine bhāgam utsṛjaty anujñātaṃ vā gṛhṇāti prāk prātarāśāt karṣī syād asyūtanāsikābhyāṃ samuṣkābhyām atudann ārayā muhurmuhur abhyucchandayan etena vidhinā ṣaṇnivartanāni karotīti ṣaṇṇivartanī kauddālīti jalābhyāśe kuddālena vā phālena vā tīkṣṇakāṣṭhena vā khanati bījāny āvapati kandamūlaphalaśākauṣadhīr niṣpādayati kuddālena karotīti kauddālī dhruvayā vartamānaḥ śuklena vāsasā śiro veṣṭayati bhūtyai tvā śiro veṣṭayāmīti brahmavarcasam asi brahmavarcasāya tveti kṛṣṇājinam ādatte 'bliṅgābhiḥ pavitram balam asi balāya tveti kamaṇḍalum dhānyam asi puṣṭyai tveti vīvadham sakhā mā gopāyeti daṇḍam athopaniṣkramya vyāhṛtīr japitvā diśām anumantraṇaṃ japati pṛthivī cāntarikṣaṃ ca dyaur nakṣatrāṇi yā diśaḥ agnir vāyuś ca sūryaś ca pāntu māṃ pathi devatā iti mānastokīyaṃ japitvā grāmaṃ praviśya gṛhadvāre gṛhadvāra ātmānaṃ vīvadhena saha darśanāt saṃdarśanīty ācakṣate vṛtter vṛtter avārttāyāṃ tayaiva tasya dhruvaṃ vartanād dhruveti parikīrtitā saṃprakṣālanīti utpannānām oṣadhīnāṃ prakṣepaṇam nikṣepaṇaṃ nāsti nicayo vā bhājanāni saṃprakṣālya nyubjatīti saṃprakṣālanī samūheti avāritasthāneṣu pathiṣu vā kṣetreṣu vāpratihatāvakāśeṣu vā yatra yatrauṣadhayo vidyante tatra tatra samūhanyā samuhya tābhir vartayatīti samūhā phālanīty ahiṃsikety evedam uktaṃ bhavati tuṣavihīnāṃs taṇḍulān icchati sajjanebhyo bījāni vā phālayatīti phālanī śiloñcheti avāritasthāneṣu pathiṣu vā kṣetreṣu vāpratihatāvakāśeṣu vā yatra yatrauṣadhayo vidyante tatra tatraikaikaṃ kaṇiśam uñchayitvā kāle kāle śilair vartayatīti śiloñchā kāpoteti avāritasthāneṣu pathiṣu vā kṣetreṣu vāpratihatāvakāśeṣu vā yatra yatrauṣadhayo vidyante tatra tatrāṅgulībhyām ekaikām oṣadhim uñchayitvā saṃdaṃśanāt kapotavad iti kāpotā siddheccheti vṛttibhiḥ śrānto vṛddhatvād dhātukṣayād vā sajjanebhyaḥ siddham annam icchatīti siddhecchā tasyātmani samāropaṇaṃ vidyate saṃnyāsivad upacāraḥ pavitrakāṣāyavāsovarjam vānyāpi vṛkṣalatāvallyoṣadhīnāṃ ca tṛṇauṣadhīnāṃ ca śyāmākajartilādīnām vanyābhir vartayatīti vānyā athāpy udāharanti mṛgaiḥ saha parispandaḥ saṃvāsas tebhir eva ca tair eva sadṛśī vṛttiḥ pratyakṣaṃ svargalakṣaṇam pratyakṣaṃ svargalakṣaṇam iti atha vānaprasthadvaividhyam pacamānakā apacamānakāś ceti tatra pacamānakāḥ pañcavidhāḥ sarvāraṇyakā vaituṣikāḥ kandamūlabhakṣāḥ phalabhakṣāḥ śākabhakṣāś ceti tatra sarvāraṇyakā nāma dvividhā dvividham āraṇyam āśrayanta indrāvasiktā retovasiktāś ceti tatrendrāvasiktā nāma vallīgulmalatāvṛkṣāṇām ānayitvā śrapayitvā sāyamprātaragnihotraṃ hutvā yatyatithivratibhyaś ca dattvāthetaraccheṣabhakṣāḥ retovasiktā nāma māṃsaṃ vyāghravṛkaśyenādibhir anyatamena vā hatam ānayitvā śrapayitvā sāyamprātaragnihotraṃ hutvā yatyatithivratibhyaś ca dattvāthetaraccheṣabhakṣāḥ vaituṣikās tuṣadhānyavarjaṃ taṇḍulān ānayitvā śrapayitvā sāyamprātaragnihotraṃ hutvā yatyatithivratibhyaś ca dattvāthetaraccheṣabhakṣāḥ kandamūlaphalaśākabhakṣāṇām apy evam eva pañcaivāpacamānakā unmajjakāḥ pravṛttāśino mukhenādāyinas toyāhārā vāyubhakṣāś ceti tatronmajjakā nāma lohāśmakaraṇavarjam hastenādāya pravṛttāśinaḥ mukhenādāyino mukhenādadate toyāhārāḥ kevalaṃ toyāhārāḥ vāyubhakṣā nirāhārāś ca iti vaikhānasānāṃ vihitā daśa dīkṣāḥ yaḥ svaśāstram abhyupetya daṇḍaṃ ca maunaṃ cāpramādaṃ ca vaikhānasāḥ śudhyanti nirāhārāś ceti śāstraparigrahaḥ sarveṣāṃ brahmavaikhānasānām na druhyed daṃśamaśakān himavāṃs tāpaso bhavet vanapratiṣṭhaḥ saṃtuṣṭaś cīracarmajalapriyaḥ atithīn pūjayet pūrvaṃ kāle tv āśramam āgatān devaviprāgnihotre ca yuktas tapasi tāpasaḥ kṛcchrāṃ vṛttim asaṃhāryāṃ sāmānyāṃ mṛgapakṣibhiḥ tadaharjanasaṃbhārāṃ kaṣāyakaṭukāśrayām parigṛhya śubhāṃ vṛttim etāṃ durjanavarjitām vanavāsam upāśritya brāhmaṇo nāvasīdati mṛgaiḥ saha parispandaḥ saṃvāsas tebhir eva ca tair eva sadṛśī vṛttiḥ pratyakṣaṃ svargalakṣaṇam pratyakṣaṃ svargalakṣaṇam iti atha yadi brahmacāry avratyam iva caren māṃsaṃ vāśnīyāt striyaṃ vopeyāt sarvāsv evārtiṣu antarāgāre 'gnim upasamādhāya saṃparistīryāgnimukhāt kṛtvāthājyāhutīr upajuhoti kāmena kṛtaṃ kāmaḥ karoti kāmāyaivedaṃ sarvaṃ yo mā kārayati tasmai svāhā manasā kṛtaṃ manaḥ karoti manasa evedaṃ sarvaṃ yo mā kārayati tasmai svāhā rajasā kṛtaṃ rajaḥ karoti rajasa evedaṃ sarvaṃ yo mā kārayati tasmai svāhā tamasā kṛtaṃ tamaḥ karoti tamasa evedaṃ sarvaṃ yo mā kārayati tasmai svāhā pāpmanā kṛtaṃ pāpmā karoti pāpmana evedaṃ sarvaṃ yo mā kārayati tasmai svāhā manyunā kṛtaṃ manyuḥ karoti manyava evedaṃ sarvaṃ yo mā kārayati tasmai svāheti jayaprabhṛti siddham ā dhenuvarapradānāt apareṇāgniṃ kṛṣṇājinena prācīnagrīveṇottaralomnā prāvṛtya vasati vyuṣṭāyāṃ jaghanārdhād ātmānam apakṛṣya tīrthaṃ gatvā prasiddhaṃ snātvāntarjalagato 'ghamarṣaṇena ṣoḍaśa prāṇāyāmān dhārayitvā prasiddham ādityopasthānāt kṛtvācāryasyagṛhān eti yathāśvamedhāvabhṛtha evam evaitad vijānīyād iti athātaḥ pavitrātipavitrasyāghamarṣaṇasya kalpaṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ tīrthaṃ gatvā snātaḥ śucivāsā udakānte sthaṇḍilam uddhṛtya sakṛtklinnena vāsasā sakṛtpūrṇena pāṇinādityābhimukho 'ghamarṣaṇaṃ svādhyāyam adhīyīta prātaḥ śataṃ madhyāhne śatam aparāhṇe śatam aparimitaṃ vā uditeṣu nakṣatreṣu prasṛtiyāvakaṃ prāśnīyāt jñānakṛtebhyo 'jñānakṛtebhyaś copapātakebhyaḥ saptarātrāt pramucyate dvādaśarātrād bhrūṇahananaṃ gurutalpagamanaṃ suvarṇastainyaṃ surāpānam iti ca varjayitvā ekaviṃśatirātrāt tāny api tarati tāny api jayati sarvaṃ tarati sarvaṃ jayati sarvakratuphalam avāpnoti sarveṣu tīrtheṣu snāto bhavati sarveṣu vedeṣu cīrṇavrato bhavati sarvair devair jñāto bhavaty ā cakṣuṣaḥ paṅktiṃ punāti karmāṇi cāsya sidhyantīti baudhāyanaḥ atha karmabhir ātmakṛtair gurum ivātmānaṃ manyetātmārthe prasṛtiyāvakaṃ śrapayed uditeṣu nakṣatreṣu na tato 'gnau juhuyāt na cātra balikarma aśṛtaṃ śrapyamāṇaṃ śṛtaṃ cābhimantrayeta yavo 'si dhānyarājo 'si vāruṇo madhusaṃyutaḥ nirṇodaḥ sarvapāpānāṃ pavitram ṛṣibhiḥ smṛtam ghṛtaṃ yavā madhu yavā āpo vā amṛtaṃ yavāḥ sarvaṃ punīta me pāpaṃ yan mayā duṣkṛtaṃ kṛtam vācā kṛtaṃ karma kṛtaṃ manasā durvicintitam alakṣmīṃ kālakarṇīṃ ca sarvaṃ punīta me yavāḥ śvasūkarāvadhūtaṃ ca kākocchiṣṭahataṃ ca yat mātāpitror aśuśrūṣāṃ sarvaṃ punīta me yavāḥ mahāpātakasaṃyuktaṃ dāruṇaṃ rājakilbiṣam bālavṛddham adharmaṃ ca sarvaṃ punīta me yavāḥ suvarṇastainyam avratyam ayājyasya ca yājanam brāhmaṇānāṃ parīvādaṃ sarvaṃ punīta me yavāḥ gaṇānnaṃ gaṇikānnaṃ ca śūdrānnaṃ śrāddhasūtakam corasyānnaṃ navaśrāddhaṃ sarvaṃ punīta me yavā iti śrapyamāṇe rakṣāṃ kuryāt namo rudrāya bhūtādhipataye dyauḥ śāntā kṛṇuṣva pājaḥ prasitiṃ na pṛthvīm ity etenānuvākena ye devāḥ puraḥsado 'gninetrā rakṣohaṇa iti pañcabhiḥ paryāyaiḥ mā nas toke brahmā devānām iti dvābhyām śṛtaṃ ca laghv aśnīyāt prayataḥ pātre niṣicya ye devā manojātā manoyujaḥ sudakṣā dakṣapitāras te naḥ pāntu te no 'vantu tebhyo namas tebhyaḥ svāheti ātmani juhuyāt trirātraṃ medhārthī ṣaḍrātraṃ pītvā pāpakṛcchuddho bhavati saptarātraṃ pītvā bhrūṇahananaṃ gurutalpagamanaṃ suvarṇastainyaṃ surāpānam iti ca punāti ekādaśarātraṃ pītvā pūrvapuruṣakṛtam api pāpaṃ nirṇudati api vā goniṣkrāntānāṃ yavānām ekaviṃśatirātraṃ pītvā gaṇān paśyati gaṇādhipatiṃ paśyati vidyāṃ paśyati vidyādhipatiṃ paśyatīty āha bhagavān baudhāyanaḥ kūśmāṇḍair juhuyād yo 'pūta iva manyeta yathā steno yathā bhrūṇahaivam eṣa bhavati yo 'yonau retaḥ siñcati yad arvācīnam eno bhrūṇahatyāyās tasmān mucyata iti ayonau retaḥ siktvānyatra svapnād arepā vā pavitrakāmaḥ amāvāsyāyāṃ paurṇamāsyāṃ vā keśaśmaśrulomanakhāni vāpayitvā brahmacārikalpena vratam upaiti saṃvatsaraṃ māsaṃ caturviṃśatyahaṃ dvādaśa rātrīḥ ṣaṭ tisro vā na māṃsam aśnīyān na striyam upeyān noparyāsīta jugupsetānṛtāt payobhakṣa iti prathamaḥ kalpaḥ yāvakaṃ vopayuñjānaḥ kṛcchradvādaśarātraṃ cared bhikṣed vā tadvidheṣu yavāgūṃ rājanyo vaiśya āmikṣām pūrvāhṇe pākayajñikadharmeṇāgnim upasamādhāya saṃparistīryāgnimukhāt kṛtvāthājyāhutīr upajuhoti yad devā devaheḍanam yad adīvyann ṛṇam ahaṃ babhūva āyuṣ ṭe viśvato dadhad iti etais tribhir anuvākaiḥ pratyṛcam ājyasya juhuyāt siṃhe vyāghra uta yā pṛdākāv iti catasraḥ sruvāhutīḥ agne 'bhyāvartin agne aṅgiraḥ punar ūrjā saha rayyeti catasro 'bhyāvartinīr hutvā samitpāṇir yajamānaloke 'vasthāya vaiśvānarāya prati vedayāma iti dvādaśarcena sūktenopatiṣṭhate yan mayā manasā vācā kṛtam enaḥ kadācana sarvasmāt tasmān meḍito mogdhi tvaṃ hi vettha yathātathaṃ svāheti samidham ādhāya varaṃ dadāti jayaprabhṛti siddham ā dhenuvarapradānāt eka evāgnau paricārī athāgnyādheye yad devā devaheḍanam yad adīvyann ṛṇam ahaṃ babhūva āyuṣ ṭe viśvato dadhad iti pūrṇāhutīḥ hutvāgnihotram ārapsyamāno daśahotrā hutvā darśapūrṇamāsāv ārapsyamānaś caturhotrā hutvā cāturmāsyāny ārapsyamānaḥ pañcahotrā hutvā paśubandhe ṣaḍḍhotrā hutvā some saptahotrā vijñāyate ca karmādiṣv etair juhuyāt pūto devalokān samaśnuta iti hi brāhmaṇam iti hi brāhmaṇam athātaś cāndrāyaṇasya kalpaṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ śuklacaturdaśīm upavaset keśaśmaśrulomanakhāni vāpayitvāpi vā śmaśrūṇy evāhataṃ vāso vasānaḥ satyaṃ bruvann āvasatham abhyupeyāt tasminn asya sakṛtpraṇīto 'gnir araṇyor nirmanthyo vā brahmacārī suhṛt praiṣāyopakalpī syāt haviṣyaṃ ca vratopāyanīyam agnim upasamādhāya saṃparistīryāgnimukhāt kṛtvā pakvāj juhoti agnaye yā tithiḥ syān nakṣatrāya sadaivatāya atrāha gor amanvateti cāndramasīṃ pañcamīṃ dyāvāpṛthivībhyāṃ ṣaṣṭhīm ahorātrābhyāṃ saptamīṃ raudrīm aṣṭamīṃ saurīṃ navamīṃ vāruṇīṃ daśamīm aindrīmekādaśīṃ vaiśvadevīṃ dvādaśīm iti athāparāḥ samāmananti digbhyaś ca sadaivatābhya uror antarikṣāya sadaivatāya navo navo bhavati jāyamāna iti sauviṣṭakṛtīṃ hutvāthaitaddhavirucchiṣṭaṃ kaṃse vā camase vā vyuddhṛtya haviṣyair vyañjanair upasicya pañcadaśa piṇḍān prakṛtisthān prāśnāti prāṇāya tveti prathamam apānāya tveti dvitīyam vyānāya tveti tṛtīyam udānāya tveti caturtham samānāya tveti pañcamam yadā catvāro dvābhyāṃ pūrvam yadā trayo dvābhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ pūrvau yadā dvau dvābhyāṃ pūrvaṃ tribhir uttaram ekaṃ sarvaiḥ nigrābhyā stheti apaḥ pītvāthājyāhutīr upajuhoti prāṇāpānavyānodānasamānā me śudhyantāṃ jyotir ahaṃ virajā vipāpmā bhūyāsaṃ svāhā vāṅmanaḥ śiraḥpāṇi tvakcarmamāṃsaṃ pṛthivyaptejo annamayaprāṇamayamanomayavijñānamayānandamayā me śudhyantāṃ jyotir ahaṃ virajā vipāpmā bhūyāsaṃ svāheti saptabhir anuvākaiḥ jayaprabhṛti siddham ā dhenuvarapradānāt saurībhir ādityam upatiṣṭhate cāndramasībhiś candramasam agne tvaṃ su jāgṛhīti saṃviśañ japati tvam agne vratapā asīti prabuddhaḥ strīśūdrair nābhibhāṣeta mūtrapurīṣe nāvekṣeta amedhyaṃ dṛṣṭvā japati abaddhaṃ mano daridraṃ cakṣuḥ sūryo jyotiṣāṃ śreṣṭho dīkṣe mā mā hāsīr iti prathamāyām aparapakṣasya caturdaśa grāsān evam ekāpacayenāmāvāsyāyāḥ amāvāsyāyāṃ grāso na vidyate atha prathamāyāṃ pūrvapakṣasyaikaḥ dvau dvitīyāyām evam ekopacayenā paurṇamāsyāḥ paurṇamāsyāṃ sthālīpākasya juhoty agnaye yā tithiḥ syān nakṣatrebhyaś ca sadaivatebhyaḥ purastācchroṇāyā abhijitaḥ sadaivatasya hutvā gāṃ brāhmaṇebhyo dadyāt tad etac cāndrāyaṇaṃ pipīlikāmadhyam viparītaṃ yavamadhyam ato 'nyatarac caritvā sarvebhyaḥ pātakebhyaḥ pāpakṛcchuddho bhavati kāmāya kāmāyaitad āhāryam ity ācakṣate yaṃ kāmaṃ kāmayate tam etenāpnoti etena vā ṛṣaya ātmānaṃ śodhayitvā purā karmāṇy asādhayan tad etad dhanyaṃ puṇyaṃ putryaṃ pautryaṃ paśavyam āyuṣyaṃ svargyaṃ yaśasyaṃ sārvakāmikam nakṣatrāṇāṃ dyutiṃ sūryācandramasor eva sāyujyaṃ salokatām āpnoti ya u cainad adhīte ya u cainad adhīte athāto 'naśnatpārāyaṇavidhiṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ śucivāsāḥ syāc cīravāsā vā haviṣyam annam icched apaḥ phalāni vā grāmāt prācīṃ vodīcīṃ vā diśam upaniṣkramya gomayena gocarmamātraṃ caturaśraṃ sthaṇḍilam upalipya prokṣya lakṣaṇam ullikhya adbhir abhyukṣya agnim upasamādhāya saṃparistīryaitābhyo devatābhyo juhuyāt agnaye svāhā prajāpataye svāhā somāya svāhā viśvebhyo devebhyaḥ svayaṃbhuva ṛgbhyo yajurbhyaḥ sāmabhyo 'tharvabhyaḥ śraddhāyai prajñāyai medhāyai śriyai hriyai savitre sāvitryai sadasaspataye 'numataye ca hutvā vedādim ārabheta saṃtatam adhīyīta nāntarā vyāharen na cāntarā viramet athāntarā vyāhared athāntarā viramet triḥ prāṇān āyamya vṛttāntād evārabheta apratibhāyāṃ yāvatā kālena na veda tāvantaṃ kālaṃ tad adhīyīta sa yadā jānīyād ṛkto yajuṣṭaḥ sāmata iti tadbrāhmaṇaṃ tacchāndasaṃ taddaivatam adhīyīta dvādaśa vedasaṃhitā adhīyīta yad anenānadhyāye 'dhīyīta yad guravaḥ kopitā yāny akāryāṇi bhavanti tābhiḥ punīte śuddham asya pūtaṃ brahma bhavati ata ūrdhvaṃ saṃcayaḥ aparā dvādaśa vedasaṃhitā adhītya tābhir uśanaso lokam avāpnoti aparā dvādaśa vedasaṃhitā adhītya tābhir bṛhaspater lokam avāpnoti aparā dvādaśa vedasaṃhitā adhītya tābhiḥ prajāpater lokam avāpnoti anaśnan saṃhitāsahasram adhīyīta brahmabhūto virajo brahma bhavati saṃvatsaraṃ bhaikṣaṃ prayuñjāno divyaṃ cakṣur labhate ṣaṇ māsān yāvakabhakṣaś caturo māsān udakasaktubhakṣo dvau māsau phalabhakṣo māsam abbhakṣo dvādaśarātraṃ vāprāśnan kṣipram antardhīyate jñātīn punāti saptāvarān sapta pūrvān ātmānaṃ pañcadaśaṃ paṅktiṃ ca punāti tām etāṃ devaniśrayaṇīty ācakṣate etayā vai devā devatvam agacchann ṛṣaya ṛṣitvam tasya ha vā etasya yajñasya trividha evārambhakālaḥ prātaḥsavane mādhyaṃdine savane brāhme vāpararātre taṃ vā etaṃ prajāpatiḥ saptarṣibhyaḥ provāca saptarṣayo mahājajñave mahājajñur brāhmaṇebhyaḥ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ ukto varṇadharmaś cāśramadharmaś ca atha khalv ayaṃ puruṣo yāpyena karmaṇā mithyā vā caraty ayājyaṃ vā yājayaty apratigrāhyasya vā pratigṛhṇāty anāśyānnasya vānnam aśnāty acaraṇīyena vā carati tatra prāyaścittaṃ kuryān na kuryād iti mīmāṃsante nahi karma kṣīyata iti kuryād ity eva punastomeneṣṭvā punaḥ savanam āyāntīti vijñāyate athāpy udāharanti sarvaṃ pāpmānaṃ tarati tarati brahmahatyāṃ yo 'śvamedhena yajata iti agniṣṭutā vābhiśasyamāno yajeteti ca tasya niṣkrayaṇāni japas tapo homa upavāso dānam upaniṣado vedādayo vedāntāḥ sarvacchandaḥsu saṃhitā madhūny aghamarṣaṇam atharvaśiro rudrāḥ puruṣasūktaṃ rājanarauhiṇe sāmanī bṛhadrathaṃtare puruṣagatir mahānāmnyo mahāvairājaṃ mahādivākīrtyaṃ jyeṣṭhasāmnām anyatamaṃ bahiṣpavamānaḥ kūśmāṇḍyaḥ pāvamānyaḥ sāvitrī ceti pāvanāni upasannyāyena payovratatā śākabhakṣatā phalabhakṣatā mūlabhakṣatā prasṛtiyāvako hiraṇyaprāśanaṃ ghṛtaprāśanaṃ somapānam iti medhyāni sarve śiloccayāḥ sarvāḥ sravantyaḥ saritaḥ puṇyā hradās tīrthāny ṛṣiniketanāni goṣṭhakṣetrapariṣkandā iti deśāḥ ahiṃsā satyam astainyaṃ savaneṣūdakopasparśanaṃ guruśuśrūṣā brahmacaryam adhaḥśayanam ekavastratānāśaka iti tapāṃsi hiraṇyaṃ gaur vāso 'śvo bhūmis tilā ghṛtam annam iti deyāni saṃvatsaraḥ ṣaṇmāsāś catvāras trayo dvāv ekaś caturviṃśatyaho dvādaśāhaḥ ṣaḍahas tryaho 'horātra ekāha iti kālāḥ etāny anādeśe kriyeran enaḥsu guruṣu gurūṇi laghuṣu laghūni kṛcchrātikṛcchrau cāndrāyaṇam iti sarvaprāyaścittiḥ sarvaprāyaścittiḥ prāyaścittāni vakṣyāmo nānārthāni pṛthakpṛthak teṣu teṣu ca doṣeṣu garīyāṃsi laghūni ca yady atra hi bhaved yuktaṃ taddhi tatraiva nirdiśet bhūyo bhūyo garīyaḥsu laghuṣv alpīyasas tathā vidhinā śāstradṛṣṭena prāṇāyāmān samācaret yad upasthakṛtaṃ pāpaṃ padbhyāṃ vā yat kṛtaṃ bhavet bāhubhyāṃ manasā vācā śrotratvagghrāṇacakṣuṣā api vā cakṣuḥśrotratvagghrāṇamanovyatikrameṣu tribhiḥ prāṇāyāmaiḥ śudhyati śūdrānnastrīgamanabhojaneṣu kevaleṣu pṛthakpṛthak saptāhaṃ sapta sapta prāṇāyāmān dhārayet abhakṣyābhojyāpeyānādyaprāśaneṣu tathāpaṇyavikrayeṣu madhumāṃsaghṛtatailakṣāralavaṇāvarānnavarjeṣu yac cānyad apy evaṃ yuktaṃ dvādaśāhaṃ dvādaśa dvādaśa prāṇāyāmān dhārayet pātakapatanīyopapātakavarjeṣu yac cānyad apy evaṃ yuktam ardhamāsaṃ dvādaśa yaḥ kanyāṃ na prayacchati sa tulyaṃ bhrūṇahatyāyai doṣam ṛcchaty asaṃśayam na yācate ced evaṃ syād yācate cet pṛthakpṛthak ekaikasminn ṛtau doṣaṃ pātakaṃ manur abravīt trīṇi varṣāṇy ṛtumatī kāṅkṣeta pitṛśāsanam tataś caturthe varṣe tu vindeta sadṛśaṃ patim avidyamāne sadṛśe guṇahīnam api śrayet balāc cet prahṛtā kanyā mantrair yadi na saṃskṛtā anyasmai vidhivad deyā yathā kanyā tathaiva sā nisṛṣṭāyāṃ hute vāpi yasyai bhartā mriyeta saḥ sā ced akṣatayoniḥ syād gatapratyāgatā satī paunarbhavena vidhinā punaḥsaṃskāram arhati trīṇi varṣāṇy ṛtumatīṃ yo bhāryāṃ nādhigacchati sa tulyaṃ bhrūṇahatyāyai doṣam ṛcchaty asaṃśayam ṛtusnātāṃ tu yo bhāryāṃ saṃnidhau nopagacchati pitaras tasya taṃ māsaṃ tasmin rajasi śerate ṛtau nopaiti yo bhāryām anṛtau yaś ca gacchati tulyam āhus tayor doṣam ayonau yaś ca siñcati bhartuḥ pratiniveśena yā bhāryā skandayed ṛtum tāṃ grāmamadhye vikhyāpya bhrūṇaghnīṃ nirdhamed gṛhāt ṛtusnātāṃ na ced gacchen niyatāṃ dharmacāriṇīm niyamātikrame tasya prāṇāyāmaśataṃ smṛtam prāṇāyāmān pavitrāṇi vyāhṛtīḥ praṇavaṃ tathā pavitrapāṇir āsīno brahma naityakam abhyaset āvartayet sadā yuktaḥ prāṇāyāmān punaḥpunaḥ ā keśāntān nakhāgrāc ca tapas tapyata uttamam nirodhāj jāyate vāyur vāyor agniś ca jāyate tāpenāpo 'dhijāyante tato 'ntaḥ śudhyate tribhiḥ yogenāvāpyate jñānaṃ yogo dharmasya lakṣaṇam yogamūlā guṇāḥ sarve tasmād yuktaḥ sadā bhavet praṇavādyās trayo vedāḥ praṇave paryavasthitāḥ praṇavo vyāhṛtayaś caiva nityaṃ brahma sanātanam praṇave nityayuktasya vyāhṛtīṣu ca saptasu tripadāyāṃ ca gāyatryāṃ na bhayaṃ vidyate kvacit savyāhṛtikāṃ sapraṇavāṃ gāyatrīṃ śirasā saha triḥ paṭhed āyataprāṇaḥ prāṇāyāmaḥ sa ucyate savyāhṛtikāḥ sapraṇavāḥ prāṇāyāmās tu ṣoḍaśa api bhrūṇahanaṃ māsāt punanty aharahardhṛtāḥ etadādyaṃ tapaḥ śreṣṭham etad dharmasya lakṣaṇam sarvadoṣopaghātārtham etad eva viśiṣyate etad eva viśiṣyata iti prāyaścittāni vakṣyāmo nānārthāni pṛthakpṛthak teṣu teṣu ca doṣeṣu garīyāṃsi laghūni ca yady atra hi bhaved yuktaṃ taddhi tatraiva nirdiśet bhūyo bhūyo garīyaḥsu laghuṣv alpīyasas tathā vidhinā śāstradṛṣṭena prāyaścittāni nirdiśet pratigrahīṣyamāṇas tu pratigṛhya tathaiva ca ṛcas taratsamandyas tu catasraḥ parivartayet abhojyānāṃ tu sarveṣām abhojyānnasya bhojane ṛgbhis taratsamandībhir mārjanaṃ pāpaśodhanam bhrūṇahatyāvidhis tv anyas taṃ tu vakṣyāmy ataḥ param vidhinā yena mucyante pātakebhyo 'pi sarvaśaḥ prāṇāyāmān pavitrāṇi vyāhṛtīḥ praṇavaṃ tathā japed aghamarṣaṇaṃ sūktaṃ payasā dvādaśa kṣapāḥ trirātraṃ vāyubhakṣo vā klinnavāsāḥ plutaḥ śuciḥ pratiṣiddhāṃs tathācārān abhyasyāpi punaḥpunaḥ vāruṇībhir upasthāya sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyata iti athāvakīrṇy amāvāsyāyāṃ niśy agnim upasamādhāya dārvihomikīṃ pariceṣṭāṃ kṛtvā dve ājyāhutī juhoti kāmāvakīrṇo 'smy avakīrṇo 'smi kāma kāmāya svāhā kāmābhidrugdho 'smy abhidrugdho 'smi kāma kāmāya svāheti hutvā prayatāñjaliḥ kavātiryaṅṅ agnim upatiṣṭheta saṃ mā siñcantu marutaḥ sam indraḥ saṃ bṛhaspatiḥ saṃ māyam agniḥ siñcatv āyuṣā ca balena cāyuṣmantaṃ karotu meti prati hāsmai marutaḥ prāṇān dadhati pratīndro balaṃ prati bṛhaspatir brahmavarcasaṃ praty agnir itarat sarvam sarvatanur bhūtvā sarvam āyur eti trir abhimantrayeta triṣatyā hi devā iti vijñāyate yo 'pūta iva manyeta ātmānam upapātakaiḥ sa hutvaitena vidhinā sarvasmāt pāpāt pramucyate api vānādyāpeyapratiṣiddhabhojaneṣu doṣavac ca karma kṛtvābhisaṃdhipūrvam anabhisaṃdhipūrvaṃ vā śūdrāyāṃ ca retaḥ siktvāyonau vābliṅgābhir vāruṇībhiś copaspṛśya prayato bhavati athāpy udāharanti anādyāpeyapratiṣiddhabhojane viruddhadharmācarite ca karmaṇi matipravṛtte 'pi ca pātakopamair viśudhyate 'thāpi ca sarvapātakaiḥ trirātraṃ vāpy upavasaṃs trir ahno 'bhyupayann apaḥ prāṇān ātmani saṃyamya triḥ paṭhed aghamarṣaṇam yathāśvamedhāvabhṛtha evaṃ tan manur abravīt vijñāyate ca caraṇaṃ pavitraṃ vitataṃ purāṇaṃ yena pūtas tarati duṣkṛtāni tena pavitreṇa śuddhena pūtā ati pāpmānam arātiṃ taremeti prāyaścittāni vakṣyāmo 'vikhyātāni viśeṣataḥ samāhitānāṃ yuktānāṃ pramādeṣu kathaṃ bhavet oṃpūrvābhir vyāhṛtibhiḥ sarvābhiḥ sarvapātakeṣv ācāmet yat prathamam ācāmati tenargvedaṃ prīṇāti yad dvitīyaṃ tena yajurvedaṃ yat tṛtīyaṃ tena sāmavedam yat prathamaṃ parimārṣṭi tenātharvavedaṃ yad dvitīyaṃ tenetihāsapurāṇam yat savyaṃ pāṇiṃ prokṣati pādau śiro hṛdayaṃ nāsike cakṣuṣī śrotre nābhiṃ copaspṛśati tenauṣadhivanaspatayaḥ sarvāś ca devatāḥ prīṇāti tasmād ācamanād eva sarvasmāt pāpāt pramucyate aṣṭau vā samidha ādadhyāt devakṛtasyainaso 'vayajanam asi svāhā manuṣyakṛtasyainaso 'vayajanam asi svāhā pitṛkṛtasyainaso 'vayajanam asi svāhā ātmakṛtasyainaso 'vayajanam asi svāhā yad divā ca naktaṃ cainaś cakṛma tasyāvayajanam asi svāhā yat svapantaś ca jāgrataś cainaś cakṛma tasyāvayajanam asi svāhā yad vidvāṃsaś cāvidvāṃsaś cainaś cakṛma tasyāvayajanam asi svāhā enasa enaso 'vayajanam asi svāheti etair aṣṭābhir hutvā sarvasmāt pāpāt pramucyate athāpy udāharanti aghamarṣaṇaṃ devakṛtaṃ śuddhavatyas taratsamāḥ kūśmāṇḍyaḥ pāvamānyaś ca virajā mṛtyulāṅgalam durgā vyāhṛtayo rudrā mahādoṣavināśanāḥ mahādoṣavināśanā iti prāyaścittāni vakṣyāmo 'vikhyātāni viśeṣataḥ samāhitānāṃ yuktānāṃ pramādeṣu kathaṃ bhavet ṛtaṃ ca satyaṃ ceti etad aghamarṣaṇaṃ trir antarjale paṭhan sarvasmāt pāpāt pramucyate āyaṃ gauḥ pṛśnir akramīd iti etām ṛcaṃ trir antarjale paṭhan sarvasmāt pāpāt pramucyate drupadād iven mumucāna iti etām ṛcaṃ trir antarjale paṭhan sarvasmāt pāpāt pramucyate haṃsaḥ śuciṣad iti etām ṛcaṃ trir antarjale paṭhan sarvasmāt pāpāt pramucyate api vā sāvitrīṃ paccho 'rdharcaśas tataḥ samastāṃ trir antarjale paṭhan sarvasmāt pāpāt pramucyate api vā vyāhṛtīr vyastāḥ samastāś ceti trir antarjale paṭhan sarvasmāt pāpāt pramucyate api vā praṇavam eva trir antarjale paṭhan sarvasmāt pāpāt pramucyate tad etad dharmaśāstraṃ nāputrāya nāśiṣyāya nāsaṃvatsaroṣitāya dadyāt sahasraṃ dakṣiṇā ṛṣabhaikādaśaṃ guruprasādo vā guruprasādo vā athātaḥ sampravakṣyāmi sāmargyajuratharvaṇām karmabhir yair avāpnoti kṣipraṃ kāmān manogatān japahomeṣṭiyantrādyaiḥ śodhayitvā svavigraham sādhayet sarvakarmāṇi nānyathā siddhim aśnute japahomeṣṭiyantrāṇi kariṣyann ādito dvijaḥ śuklapuṇyadinaṛkṣeṣu keśaśmaśrūṇi vāpayet snāyāt triṣavaṇaṃ pāyād ātmānaṃ krodhato 'nṛtāt strīśūdrair nābhibhāṣeta brahmacārī havirvrataḥ goviprapitṛdevebhyo namaskuryād divāsvapan japahomeṣṭiyantrastho divāsthāno niśāsanaḥ prājāpatyo bhavet kṛcchro divā rātrāv ayācitam kramaśo vāyubhakṣaś ca dvādaśāhaṃ tryahaṃ tryaham ahar ekaṃ tathā naktam ajñātaṃ vāyubhakṣaṇam trivṛd eṣa parāvṛtto bālānāṃ kṛcchra ucyate ekaikaṃ grāsam aśnīyāt pūrvoktena tryahaṃ tryaham vāyubhakṣas tryahaṃ cānyad atikṛcchraḥ sa ucyate ambubhakṣas tryahān etān vāyubhakṣas tataḥ param kṛcchrātikṛcchras tṛtīyo vijñeyaḥ so 'tipāvanaḥ tryahaṃ tryahaṃ pibed uṣṇaṃ payaḥ sarpiḥ kuśodakam vāyubhakṣas tryahaṃ cānyat taptakṛcchraḥ sa ucyate gomūtraṃ gomayaṃ kṣīraṃ dadhi sarpiḥ kuśodakam ekarātropavāsaś ca kṛcchraḥ sāṃtapanaḥ smṛtaḥ gāyatryā ādāya gomūtraṃ gandhadvāreti gomayam āpyāyasveti ca kṣīraṃ dadhikrāvṇeti vai dadhi śukram asi jyotir ity ājyaṃ devasya tveti kuśodakam gomūtrabhāgas tasyārdhaṃ śakṛt kṣīrasya tu trayam dvayaṃ dadhno ghṛtasyaika ekaś ca kuśavāriṇaḥ evaṃ sāṃtapanaḥ kṛcchraḥ śvapākam api śodhayet gomūtraṃ gomayaṃ caiva kṣīraṃ dadhi ghṛtaṃ tathā pañcarātraṃ tadāhāraḥ pañcagavyena śudhyati yat ātmano 'pramattasya dvādaśāham abhojanam parāko nāma kṛcchro 'yaṃ sarvapāpapraṇāśanaḥ gomūtrādibhir abhyastam ekaikaṃ taṃ trisaptakam mahāsāṃtapanaṃ kṛcchraṃ vadanti brahmavādinaḥ ekavṛddhyā site piṇḍān ekahānyāsite tataḥ pakṣayor upavāsau dvau taddhi cāndrāyaṇaṃ smṛtam caturaḥ prātar aśnīyāt piṇḍān vipraḥ samāhitaḥ caturo 'stamite sūrye śiśucāndrāyaṇaṃ caret aṣṭāvaṣṭau māsam ekaṃ piṇḍān madhyaṃdine sthite niyatātmā haviṣyasya yaticāndrāyaṇaṃ caret yathā kathaṃcit piṇḍānāṃ dvijas tisras tv aśītayaḥ māsenāśnan haviṣyasya candrasyaiti salokatām yathodyaṃś candramā hanti jagatas tamaso bhayam evaṃ pāpād bhayaṃ hanti dvijaś cāndrāyaṇaṃ caran kaṇapiṇyākatakrāṇi yavācāmo 'nilāśanaḥ ekatripañcasapteti pāpaghno 'yaṃ tulāpumān yāvakaḥ saptarātreṇa vṛjinaṃ hanti dehinām saptarātropavāso vā dṛṣṭam etan manīṣibhiḥ pauṣabhādrapadajyeṣṭhāsv ārdrākāśātapāśrayāt trīñśuklān mucyate pāpāt patanīyād ṛte dvijaḥ gomūtraṃ gomayaṃ kṣīraṃ dadhi sarpiḥ kuśodakam yavācāmena saṃyukto brahmakūrco 'tipāvanaḥ amāvāsyāṃ nirāhāraḥ paurṇamāsyāṃ tilāśanaḥ śuklakṛṣṇakṛtāt pāpān mucyate abdasya parvabhiḥ bhaikṣāhāro 'gnihotribhyo māsenaikena śudhyati yāyāvaravanasthebhyo daśabhiḥ pañcabhir dinaiḥ ekāhadhanino 'nnena dinenaikena śudhyati kāpotavṛttiniṣṭhasya pītvāpaḥ śudhyate tribhiḥ ṛgyajuḥsāmavedānāṃ vedasyānyatamasya vā pārāyaṇaṃ trir abhyasyed anaśnan so 'tipāvanaḥ atha cet tvarate kartuṃ divasaṃ mārutāśanaḥ rātrau jalasthito vyuṣṭaḥ prājāpatyena tat samam gāyatryāṣṭasahasraṃ tu japaṃ kṛtvotthite ravau mucyate sarvapāpebhyo yadi na bhrūṇahā bhavet yo 'nnadaḥ satyavādī ca bhūteṣu kṛpayā sthitaḥ pūrvoktayantraśuddhebhyaḥ sarvebhyaḥ so 'tiricyate samādhucchandasā rudrā gāyatrī praṇavānvitā sapta vyāhṛtayaś caiva japyāḥ pāpavināśanāḥ mṛgāreṣṭiḥ pavitreṣṭis trihaviḥ pāvamāny api iṣṭayaḥ pāpanāśinyo vaiśvānaryā samanvitāḥ idaṃ caivāparaṃ guhyam ucyamānaṃ nibodhata mucyate sarvapāpebhyo mahataḥ pātakād ṛte pavitrair mārjanaṃ kurvan rudraikādaśinīṃ japan pavitrāṇi ghṛtair juhvat prayacchan hemagotilān yo 'śnīyād yāvakaṃ pakvaṃ gomūtre saśakṛdrase sadadhikṣīrasarpiṣke mucyate so 'ṃhasaḥ kṣaṇāt prasūto yaś ca śūdrāyāṃ yenāgamyā ca laṅghitā saptarātrāt pramucyete vidhinaitena tāv ubhau retomūtrapurīṣāṇāṃ prāśane 'bhojyabhojane paryādhānejyayor etat parivitte ca bheṣajam apātakāni karmāṇi kṛtvaiva subahūny api mucyate sarvapāpebhya ity etad vacanaṃ satām mantramārgapramāṇaṃ tu vidhānaṃ samudīritam bharadvājādayo yena brahmaṇaḥ sātmatāṃ gatāḥ prasannahṛdayo vipraḥ prayogād asya karmaṇaḥ kāmāṃs tāṃs tān avāpnoti ye ye kāmā hṛdi sthitāḥ ye ye kāmā hṛdi sthitā iti nivṛttaḥ pāpakarmabhyaḥ pravṛttaḥ puṇyakarmasu yo vipras tasya sidhyanti vinā yantrair api kriyāḥ brāhmaṇā ṛjavas tasmād yad yad icchanti cetasā tat tad āsādayanty āśu saṃśuddhā ṛjukarmabhiḥ evam etāni yantrāṇi tāvat kāryāṇi dhīmatā kālena yāvatopaiti vigrahaḥ śuddhim ātmanaḥ ebhir yantrair viśuddhātmā trirātropoṣitas tataḥ tad ārabheta yenarddhiṃ karmaṇā prāptum icchati kṣmāpavitraḥ sahasrākṣo mṛgāro 'ṃhomucau gaṇau pāvamānyaś ca kūśmāṇḍyo vaiśvānarya ṛcaś ca yāḥ ghṛtaudanena tā juhvat saptāhaṃ savanatrayam maunavratī haviṣyāśī nigṛhītendriyakriyaḥ siṃhe ma ity apāṃ pūrṇe pātre 'vekṣya catuṣpathe mucyate sarvapāpebhyo mahataḥ pātakād api vṛddhatve yauvane bālye yaḥ kṛtaḥ pāpasaṃcayaḥ pūrvajanmasu cājñānāt tasmād api vimucyate bhojayitvā dvijān ante pāyasena sasarpiṣā gobhūmitilahemāni bhuktavadbhyaḥ pradāya ca vipro bhavati pūtātmā nirdagdhavṛjinendhanaḥ kāmyānāṃ karmaṇāṃ yogyas tathādhānādikarmaṇām atilobhāt pramādād vā yaḥ karoti kriyām imām anyasya so 'ṃhasāviṣṭo garagīr iva sīdati ācāryasya pitur mātur ātmanaś ca kriyām imām kurvan bhāty arkavad vipraḥ sā kāryaiṣām ataḥ kriyā ka etena sahasrākṣaṃ pavitreṇākarocchucim agniṃ vāyuṃ raviṃ somaṃ yamādīṃś ca sureśvarān yat kiṃcit puṇyanāmeha triṣu lokeṣu viśrutam viprādi tat kṛtaṃ kena pavitrakriyayānayā prājāpatyam idaṃ guhyaṃ pāpaghnaṃ prathamodbhavam samutpannāny ataḥ paścāt pavitrāṇi sahasraśaḥ yo 'bdāyanartupakṣāhāñ juhoty aṣṭau gaṇān imān punāti cātmano vaṃśyān daśa pūrvān daśāvarān jñāyate cāmarair dyusthaiḥ puṇyakarmeti bhūsthitaḥ devavan modate bhūyaḥ svargaloke 'pi puṇyakṛt etān aṣṭau gaṇān hotuṃ na śaknoti yadi dvijaḥ eko 'pi tena hotavyo rajas tenāsya naśyati sūnavo yasya śiṣyā vā juhvaty aṣṭau gaṇān imān adhyāpanaparikrītair aṃhasaḥ so 'pi mucyate dhanenāpi parikrītair ātmapāpajighāṃsayā hāvanīyā hy aśaktena nāvasādyaḥ śarīradhṛk dhanasya kriyate tyāgaḥ karmaṇāṃ sukṛtām api puṃso 'nṛṇasya pāpasya vimokṣaḥ kriyate kvacit vimukto vidhinaitena sarvapāpārṇasāgarāt ātmānaṃ manyate śuddhaṃ samarthaṃ karmasādhane sarvapāpārṇamuktātmā kriyā ārabhate tu yāḥ ayatnenaiva tāḥ siddhiṃ yānti śuddhaśarīriṇaḥ prājāpatyam idaṃ puṇyam ṛṣiṇā samudīritam idam adhyāpayen nityaṃ dhārayecchṛṇute 'pi vā mucyate sarvapāpebhyo brahmaloke mahīyate yān siṣādhayiṣur mantrān dvādaśāhāni tāñ japet ghṛtena payasā dadhnā prāśya niśy odanaṃ sakṛt daśavāraṃ tathā homaḥ sarpiṣā savanatrayam pūrvasevā bhaved eṣāṃ mantrāṇāṃ karmasādhane mantrāṇāṃ karmasādhana iti
