kāmaḥ taṃ kāmasūtrān nāgarikajanasamavāyāc ca pratipadyeta eṣāṃ samavāye pūrvaḥ pūrvo garīyān arthaśca rājñaḥ tanmūlatvāllokayātrāyāḥ veśyāyāśceti trivargapratipattiḥ dharmasyālaukikatvāt tadabhidhāyakaṃ śāstraṃ yuktam upāyapūrvakatvād arthasiddheḥ upāyapratipattiḥ śāstrāt tiryagyoniṣvapi tu svayaṃ pravṛttatvāt kāmasya nityatvācca na śāstreṇa kṛtyam astītyācāryāḥ saṃprayogaparādhīnatvāt strīpuṃsayor upāyam apekṣate sā copāyapratipattiḥ kāmasūtrād iti vātsyāyanaḥ tiryagyoniṣu punar anāvṛtatvāt strījāteśca ṛtau yāvadarthaṃ pravṛtter abuddhipūrvakatvācca pravṛttīnām anupāyaḥ pratyayaḥ na dharmāṃścaret eṣyatphalatvāt sāṃśayikatvācca ko hyabāliśo hastagataṃ paragataṃ kuryāt varam adya kapotaḥ śvo mayūrāt varaṃ sāṃśayikān niṣkād asāṃśayikaḥ kārṣāpaṇaḥ iti laukāyatikāḥ śāstrasyānabhiśaṅkyatvād abhicārānuvyāhārayośca kvacit phaladarśanān nakṣatracandrasūryatārāgrahacakrasya lokārthaṃ buddhipūrvakam iva pravṛtter darśanād varṇāśramācārasthitilakṣaṇatvāc ca lokayātrāyā hastagatasya ca bījasya bhaviṣyataḥ sasyārthe tyāgadarśanāccared dharmān iti vātsyāyanaḥ nārthāṃścaret prayatnato 'pi hyete anuṣṭhīyamānā naiva kadācit syuḥ ananuṣṭhīyamānā api yadṛcchayā bhaveyuḥ tatsarvaṃ kālakāritam iti kāla eva hi puruṣān arthānarthayor jayaparājayayoḥ sukhaduḥkhayośca sthāpayati kālena balir indraḥ kṛtaḥ kālena vyavaropitaḥ kāla eva punar apyenaṃ karteti kālakāraṇikāḥ puruṣakārapūrvakatvāt sarvapravṛttīnām upāyaḥ pratyayaḥ avaśyaṃ bhāvino 'pyarthasyopāyapūrvakatvād eva na niṣkarmaṇo bhadram astīti vātsyāyanaḥ na kāmāṃścaret dharmārthayoḥ pradhānayor evam anyeṣāṃ ca satāṃ pratyanīkatvāt anarthajanasaṃsargam asadvyavasāyam aśaucam anāyatiṃ caite puruṣasya janayanti tathā pramādaṃ lāghavam apratyayam agrāhyatāṃ ca bahavaśca kāmavaśagāḥ sagaṇā eva vinaṣṭāḥ śrūyante yathā dāṇḍakyo nāma bhojaḥ kāmād brāhmaṇakanyām abhimanyamānaḥ sabandhurāṣṭro vinanāśa devarājaścāhalyām atibalaśca kīcako draupadīṃ rāvaṇaśca sītām apare cānye ca bahavo dṛśyante kāmavaśagā vinaṣṭā ityarthacintakāḥ śarīrasthitihetutvād āhārasadharmāṇo hi kāmāḥ phalabhūtāśca dharmārthayoḥ boddhavyaṃ tu doṣeṣviva na hi bhikṣukāḥ santīti sthālyo nādhiśrīyante na hi mṛgāḥ santīti yavā nopyanta iti vātsyāyanaḥ bhavanti cātra ślokāḥ evam arthaṃ ca kāmaṃ ca dharmaṃ copācaran naraḥ ihāmutra ca niḥśalyam atyantaṃ sukham aśnute kiṃ syāt paratretyāśaṅkā kārye yasmin na jāyate na cārthaghnaṃ sukhaṃ ceti śiṣṭāstatra vyavasthitāḥ trivargasādhakaṃ yat syād dvayor ekasya vā punaḥ kāryaṃ tad api kurvīta na tv ekārthaṃ dvibādhakam dharmārthāṅgavidyākālān anuparodhayan kāmasūtraṃ tadaṅgavidyāśca puruṣo 'dhīyīta prāgyauvanāt strī prattā ca patyur abhiprāyāt yoṣitāṃ śāstragrahaṇasyābhāvād anarthakam iha śāstre strīśāsanam ityācāryāḥ prayogagrahaṇaṃ tvāsām prayogasya ca śāstrapūrvakatvād iti vātsyāyanaḥ tan na kevalam ihaiva sarvatra hi loke katicid eva śāstrajñāḥ sarvajanaviṣayaśca prayogaḥ prayogasya ca dūrastham api śāstram eva hetuḥ asti vyākaraṇam ityavaiyākaraṇā api yājñikā ūhaṃ kratuṣu prayuñjate asti jyautiṣam iti puṇyāheṣu karma kurvate tathāśvārohā gajārohāścāśvān gajāṃścānadhigataśāstrā api vinayante tathāsti rājeti dūrasthā api janapadā na maryādām ativartante tadvad etat santyapi khalu śāstraprahatabuddhayo gaṇikā rājaputryo mahāmātraduhitaraśca tasmād vaiśvāsikājjanād rahasi prayogāñchāstram ekadeśaṃ vā strī gṛhṇīyāt abhyāsaprayojyāṃśca cātuḥṣaṣṭikān yogān kanyā rahasyekākinyabhyaset ācāryāstu kanyānāṃ pravṛttapuruṣasaṃprayogā sahasampravṛddhā dhātreyikā tathābhūtā vā niratyayasaṃbhāṣaṇā sakhī savayāśca mātṛṣvasā viśrabdhā tatsthānīyā vṛddhadāsī pūrvasaṃsṛṣṭā vā bhikṣukī svasā ca viśvāsaprayogāt gītaṃ vādyaṃ nṛtyaṃ ālekhyaṃ viśeṣakachedyaṃ taṇḍulakusumavalivikārāḥ puṣpāstaraṇaṃ daśanavasanāṅgarāgaḥ maṇibhūmikākarma śayanaracanam udakavādyam udakāghātaḥ citrāśca yogāḥ mālyagrathanavikalpāḥ śekharakāpīḍayojanaṃ nepathyaprayogāḥ karṇapattrabhaṅgāḥ gandhayuktiḥ bhūṣaṇayojanam aindrajālāḥ kaucumārāś ca yogāḥ hastalāghavaṃ vicitraśākayūṣabhakṣyavikārakriyā pānakarasarāgāsavayojanaṃ sūcīvānakarmāṇi sūtrakrīḍā vīṇāḍamarukavādyāni prahelikā pratimālā durvācakayogāḥ pustakavācanaṃ nāṭakākhyāyikādarśanaṃ kāvyasamasyāpūraṇaṃ paṭṭikāvetravānavikalpāḥ takṣakarmāṇi takṣaṇaṃ vāstuvidyā rūpyaratnaparīkṣā dhātuvādaḥ maṇirāgākarajñānaṃ vṛkṣāyurvedayogāḥ meṣakukkuṭalāvakayuddhavidhiḥ śukasārikāpralāpanam utsādane saṃvāhane keśamardane ca kauśalyaṃ akṣaramuṣṭikākathanaṃ mlecchitavikalpāḥ deśabhāṣāvijñānaṃ puṣpaśakaṭikā nimittajñānaṃ yantramātṛkā dhāraṇamātṛkā sampāṭhyaṃ mānasī kāvyakriyā abhidhānakośaḥ chandojñānaṃ kriyākalpaḥ chalitakayogāḥ vastragopanāni dyūtaviśeṣā ākarṣakrīḍā bālakrīḍanakāni vainayikīnāṃ vaijayikīnāṃ vyāyāmikīnāṃ ca vidyānāṃ jñānam iti catuḥṣaṣṭir aṅgavidyāḥ kāmasūtrasyāvayavinyaḥ pāñcālikī ca catuḥṣaṣṭir aparā tasyāḥ prayogān anvavetya sāṃprayogike vakṣyāmaḥ kāmasya tadātmakatvāt ābhir abhyucchritā veśyā śīlarūpaguṇānvitā labhate gaṇikāśabdaṃ sthānaṃ ca janasaṃsadi pūjitā sā sadā rājñā guṇavadbhiśca saṃstutā prārthanīyābhigamyā ca lakṣyabhūtā ca jāyate yogajñā rājaputrī ca mahāmātrasutā tathā sahasrāntaḥpunar api svavaśe kurute patim tathā pativiyoge ca vyasanaṃ dāruṇaṃ gatā deśāntare api vidyābhiḥ sā sukhenaiva jīvati naraḥ kalāsu kuśalo vācālaścāṭukārakaḥ asaṃstuto 'pi nārīṇāṃ cittam āśv eva vindati kalānāṃ grahaṇād eva saubhāgyam upajāyate deśakālau tvapekṣyāsāṃ prayogaḥ sambhavenna vā gṛhītavidyaḥ pratigrahajayakrayanirveśādhigatair arthair anvayāgatair ubhayair vā gārhasthyam adhigamya nāgarakavṛttaṃ varteta nagare pattane kharvaṭe mahati vā sajjanāśraye sthānam yātrāvaśād vā tatra bhavanam āsannodakaṃ vṛkṣavāṭikāvad vibhaktakarmakakṣaṃ dvivāsagṛhaṃ kārayet bāhye ca vāsagṛhe suślakṣṇam ubhayopadhānaṃ madhye vinataṃ śuklottaracchadaṃ śayanīyaṃ syāt pratiśayyikā ca tasya śirobhāge kūrcasthānam vedikā ca tatra rātriśeṣam anulepanaṃ mālyaṃ sikthakaraṇḍakaṃ saugandhikapuṭikā mātuluṅgatvacastāmbūlāni ca syuḥ bhūmau patadgrahaḥ nāgadantāvasaktā vīṇā citraphalakam vartikāsamudgakaḥ yaḥ kaścit pustakaḥ kuraṇṭakamālāśca nātidūre bhūmau vṛttāstaraṇaṃ samastakam ākarṣaphalakaṃ dyūtaphalakaṃ ca tasya bahiḥ krīḍāśakunipañjarāṇi ekānte ca takṣatakṣaṇasthānam anyāsāṃ ca krīḍānām svāstīrṇā preṅkhādolā vṛkṣavāṭikāyāṃ sapracchāyā sthaṇḍilapīṭhikā ca sakusumeti bhavanavinyāsaḥ sa prātar utthāya kṛtaniyatakṛtyaḥ gṛhītadantadhāvanaḥ mātrayānulepanaṃ dhūpaṃ srajam iti ca gṛhītvā dattvā sikthakam alaktakaṃ ca dṛṣṭvādarśe mukham gṛhītamukhavāsatāmbūlaḥ kāryāṇyanutiṣṭhet nityaṃ snānam dvitīyakam utsādanam tṛtīyakaḥ phenakaḥ caturthakam āyuṣyam pañcamakaṃ daśamakaṃ vā pratyāyuṣyam ity ahīnam sātatyācca saṃvṛtakakṣāsvedāpanodaḥ pūrvāhṇāparāhṇayor bhojanam sāyaṃ cārāyaṇasya bhojanānantaraṃ śukasārikāpralāpanavyāpārāḥ lāvakakukkuṭameṣayuddhāni tāstāśca kalākrīḍāḥ pīṭhamardaviṭavidūṣakāyattā vyāpārāḥ divāśayyā ca gṛhītaprasādhanasyāparāhṇe goṣṭhīvihārāḥ pradoṣe ca saṃgītakāni tadante ca prasādhite vāsagṛhe saṃcāritasurabhidhūpe sasahāyasya śayyāyām abhisārikāṇāṃ pratīkṣaṇam dūtīnāṃ preṣaṇam svayaṃ vā gamanam āgatānāṃ ca manoharair ālāpair upacāraiśca sasahāyasyopakramāḥ varṣapramṛṣṭanepathyānāṃ durdinābhisārikāṇāṃ svayam eva punar maṇḍanam mitrajanena vā paricaraṇam ityāhorātrikam ghaṭānibandhanam goṣṭhīsamavāyaḥ samāpānakam udyānagamanam samasyāḥ krīḍāśca pravartayet pakṣasya māsasya vā prajñāte ahani sarasvatyā bhavane niyuktānāṃ nityaṃ samājaḥ kuśīlavāścāgantavaḥ prekṣaṇakam eṣāṃ dadyuḥ dvitīye ahani tebhyaḥ pūjā niyataṃ labheran tato yathāśraddham eṣāṃ darśanam utsargo vā vyasanotsaveṣu caiṣāṃ parasparasyaikakāryatā āgantūnāṃ ca kṛtasamavāyānāṃ pūjanam abhyupapattiśca iti gaṇadharmaḥ etena taṃ taṃ devatāviśeṣam uddiśya saṃbhāvitasthitayo ghaṭā vyākhyātāḥ veśyābhavane sabhāyām anyatamasyodavasite vā samānavidyābuddhiśīlavittavayasāṃ saha veśyābhir anurūpair ālāpair āsanabandho goṣṭhī tatra caiṣāṃ kāvyasamasyā kalāsamasyā vā tasyām ujjvalā lokakāntāḥ pūjyāḥ prītisamānāś cāhāritāḥ parasparabhavaneṣu cāpānakāni tatra madhumaireyasurāsavān vividhalavaṇaphalaharitaśākatiktakaṭukāmlopadaṃśān veśyāḥ pāyayeyur anupibeyuśca etenodyānagamanaṃ vyākhyātam pūrvāhṇa eva svalaṃkṛtāsturagādhirūḍhā veśyābhiḥ saha paricārakānugatā gaccheyuḥ daivasikīṃ ca yātrāṃ tatrānubhūya kukkuṭayuddhadyūtaiḥ prekṣābhir anukūlaiśca ceṣṭitaiḥ kālaṃ gamayitvā aparāhṇe gṛhītatadudyānopabhogacihnāstathaiva pratyāvrajeyuḥ etena racitodgrāhodakānāṃ grīṣme jalakrīḍāgamanaṃ vyākhyātam yakṣarātriḥ kaumudījāgaraḥ suvasantakaḥ sahakārabhañjikā abhyūṣakhādikā bisakhādikā navapattrikā udakakṣveḍikā pāñcālānuyānam ekaśālmalī kadambayuddhāni tāstāśca māhimānyo deśyāśca krīḍā janebhyo viśiṣṭam ācareyuḥ iti sambhūya krīḍāḥ ekacāriṇaśca vibhavasāmarthyād gaṇikāyā nāyikāyāśca sakhībhir nāgarakaiśca saha caritam etena vyākhyātam avibhavastu śarīramātro mallikāphenakakaṣāyamātraparicchadaḥ pūjyād deśād āgataḥ kalāsu vicakṣaṇastadupadeśena goṣṭhyāṃ veśocite ca vṛtte sādhayed ātmānam iti pīṭhamardaḥ bhuktavibhavastu guṇavān sakalatro veśe goṣṭhyāṃ ca bahumatas tadupajīvī ca viṭaḥ ekadeśavidyastu krīḍanako viśvāsyaśca vidūṣakaḥ vaihāsiko vā ete veśyānāṃ nāgarakāṇāṃ ca mantriṇaḥ saṃdhivigrahaniyuktāḥ tair bhikṣukyaḥ kalāvidagdhā muṇḍā vṛṣalyo vṛddhagaṇikāśca vyākhyātāḥ grāmavāsī ca sajātān vicakṣaṇān kautūhalikān protsāhya nāgarakajanasya vṛttaṃ varṇayañ śraddhāṃ ca janayaṃstad evānukurvīta goṣṭhīśca pravartayet saṃgatyā janam anurañjayet karmasu ca sāhāyyena cānugṛhṇīyāt upakārayecca iti nāgarakavṛttam nātyantaṃ saṃskṛtenaiva nātyantaṃ deśabhāṣayā kathāṃ goṣṭhīṣu kathayaṃlloke bahumato bhavet yā goṣṭhī lokavidviṣṭā yā ca svairavisarpiṇī parahiṃsātmikā yā ca na tām avatared budhaḥ lokacittānuvartinyā krīḍāmātraikakāryayā goṣṭhyā sahacaran vidvāṃlloke siddhiṃ niyacchati kāmaścaturṣu varṇeṣu savarṇataḥ śāstrataścānanyapūrvāyāṃ prayujyamānaḥ putrīyo yaśasyo laukikaśca bhavati tadviparīta uttamavarṇāsu paraparigṛhītāsu ca pratiṣiddho 'varavarṇāsvaniravasitāsu veśyāsu punarbhūṣu ca na śiṣṭo na pratiṣiddhaḥ sukhārthatvāt tatra nāyikāstisraḥ kanyā punarbhūr veśyā ca iti anyakāraṇavaśāt paraparigṛhītāpi pākṣikī caturthīti goṇikāputraḥ sa yadā manyate svairiṇīyam anyato 'pi bahuśo vyavasitacāritrā tasyāṃ veśyāyām iva gamanam uttamavarṇinyām api na dharmapīḍāṃ kariṣyati punarbhūr iyam anyapūrvāvaruddhā nātra śaṅkāsti patiṃ vā mahāntam īśvaram asmadamitrasaṃsṛṣṭam iyam avagṛhya prabhutvena carati sā mayā saṃsṛṣṭā snehād enaṃ vyāvartayiṣyati virasaṃ vā mayi śaktam apakartukāmaṃ ca prakṛtim āpādayiṣyati tayā vā mitrīkṛtena mitrakāryam amitrapratīghātam anyad vā duṣpratipādakaṃ kāryaṃ sādhayiṣyāmi saṃsṛṣṭo vānayā hatvāsyāḥ patim asmadbhāvyaṃ tadaiśvaryam evam adhigamiṣyāmi niratyayaṃ vāsyā gamanam arthānubaddham ahaṃ ca niḥsāratvāt kṣīṇavṛttyupāyaḥ so 'ham anenopāyena taddhanam atimahad akṛcchrād adhigamiṣyāmi marmajñā vā mayi dṛḍham abhikāmā sā mām anicchantaṃ doṣavikhyāpanena dūṣayiṣyati asadbhūtaṃ vā doṣaṃ śraddheyaṃ duṣparihāraṃ mayi kṣepsyati yena me vināśaḥ syāt āyatimantaṃ vā vaśyaṃ patiṃ matto vibhidya dviṣataḥ saṃgrāhayiṣyati svayaṃ vā taiḥ saha saṃsṛjyeta madavarodhānāṃ vā dūṣayitā patir asyāstad asyāham api dārān eva dūṣayan pratikariṣyāmi rājaniyogāccāntarvartinaṃ śatruṃ vāsya nirhaniṣyāmi yāmanyāṃ kāmayiṣye sāsyā vaśagā tām anena saṃkrameṇādhigamiṣyāmi kanyām alabhyāṃ vātmādhīnām artharūpavatīṃ mayi saṃkrāmayiṣyati mamāmitro vāsyāḥ patyā sahaikībhāvam upagatastam anayā rasena yojayiṣyāmītyevamādibhiḥ kāraṇaiḥ parastriyam api prakurvīta iti sāhasikyaṃ na kevalaṃ rāgād eva etair eva kāraṇair mahāmātrasambaddhā rājasambaddhā vā tatraikadeśacāriṇī kācid anyā vā kāryasaṃpādinī vidhavā pañcamīti cārāyaṇaḥ saiva pravrajitā ṣaṣṭhīti suvarṇanābhaḥ gaṇikāyā duhitā paricārikā vānanyapūrvā saptamīti ghoṭakamukhaḥ utkrāntabālabhāvā kulayuvatir upacārānyatvād aṣṭamīti gonardīyaḥ kāryāntarābhāvād etāsām api pūrvāsvevopalakṣaṇam tasmāccatasra eva nāyikā iti vātsyāyanaḥ bhinnatvāt tṛtīyā prakṛtiḥ pañcamītyeke eka eva tu sārvalaukiko nāyakaḥ pracchannastu dvitīyaḥ viśeṣālābhāt uttamādhamamadhyamatāṃ tu guṇāguṇato vidyāt tāṃstūbhayor api guṇāguṇān vaiśike vakṣyāmaḥ agamyāstvevaitāḥ kuṣṭhinyunmattā patitā bhinnarahasyā prakāśaprārthinī gataprāyayauvanātiśvetātikṛṣṇā durgandhā saṃbandhinī sakhī pravrajitā saṃbandhisakhiśrotriyarājadārāśca dṛṣṭapañcapuruṣā nāgamyā kācid astīti bābhravīyāḥ saṃbandhisakhiśrotriyarājadāravarjam iti goṇikāputraḥ saha pāṃsukrīḍitam upakārasambaddhaṃ samānaśīlavyasanaṃ sahādhyāyinaṃ yaścāsya marmāṇi rahasyāni ca vidyāt yasya cāyaṃ vidyād vā dhātrapatyaṃ sahasaṃvṛddhaṃ mitram pitṛpaitāmaham avisaṃvādakam adṛṣṭavaikṛtaṃ vaśyaṃ dhruvam alobhaśīlam aparihāryam amantravisrāvīti mitrasaṃpat rajakanāpitamālākāragāndhikasaurikabhikṣukagopālakatāmbūlikasauvarṇikapīṭhamardaviṭavidūṣakādayo mitrāṇi tadyoṣinmitrāśca nāgarakāḥ syur iti vātsyāyanaḥ yad ubhayoḥ sādhāraṇam ubhayatrodāraṃ viśeṣato nāyikāyāḥ suvisrabdhaṃ tatra dūtakarma paṭutā dhārṣṭyam iṅgitākārajñatā pratāraṇakālajñatā viṣahyabuddhitvaṃ laghvī pratipattiḥ sopāyā ceti dūtaguṇāḥ bhavati cātra ślokaḥ ātmavān mitravān yukto bhāvajño deśakālavit alabhyām apyayatnena striyaṃ saṃsādhayen naraḥ śaśo vṛṣo 'śva iti liṅgato nāyakaviśeṣāḥ nāyikā punarmṛgī vaḍavā hastinī ceti tatra sadṛśasaṃprayoge samaratāni trīṇi viparyayeṇa viṣamāṇi ṣaṭ viṣameṣvapi puruṣādhikyaṃ ced anantarasaṃprayoge dve uccarate vyavahitam ekam uccatararatam viparyaye punar dve nīcarate vyavahitam ekaṃ nīcatararataṃ ca teṣu samāni śreṣṭhāni taraśabdāṅkite dve kaniṣṭhe śeṣāṇi madhyamāni sāmye apyuccāṅkaṃ nīcāṅkājjyāyaḥ iti pramāṇato navaratāni yasya saṃprayogakāle prītir udāsīnā vīryam alpaṃ kṣatāni ca na sahate sa mandavegaḥ tadviparyayau madhyamacaṇḍavegau bhavatastathā nāyikāpi tatrāpi pramāṇavad eva navaratāni tadvat kālato 'pi śīghramadhyacirakālā nāyakāḥ tatra striyāṃ vivādaḥ na strī puruṣavad eva bhāvam adhigacchati sātatyāt tvasyāḥ puruṣeṇa kaṇḍūtir apanudyate sā punar ābhimānikena sukhena saṃsṛṣṭā rasāntaraṃ janayati tasmin sukhabuddhir asyāḥ puruṣapratīteś cānabhijñatvāt kathaṃ te sukham iti praṣṭum aśakyatvāt katham etad upalabhyata iti cet puruṣo hi ratim adhigamya svecchayā viramati na striyam apekṣate na tvevaṃ strītyauddālakiḥ tatraitat syāt ciravege nāyake striyo 'nurajyante śīghravegasya bhāvam anāsādyāvasāne 'bhyasūyinyo bhavanti tat sarvaṃ bhāvaprāpter aprāpteśca lakṣaṇam tacca na kaṇḍūtipratīkāro 'pi hi dīrghakālaṃ priya iti etad upapadyata eva tasmāt saṃdigdhatvād alakṣaṇam iti saṃyoge yoṣitaḥ puṃsā kaṇḍūtir apanudyate tacca abhimānasaṃsṛṣṭaṃ sukham ityabhidhīyate sātatyād yuvatir ārambhāt prabhṛti bhāvam adhigacchati puruṣaḥ punar anta eva etad upapannataram na hyasatyāṃ bhāvaprāptau garbhasaṃbhava iti bābhravīyāḥ atrāpi tāvevāśaṅkāparihārau bhūyaḥ tatraitat syāt sātatyena rasaprāptāvārambhakāle madhyasthacittatā nātisahiṣṇutā ca tataḥ krameṇādhiko rāgayogaḥ śarīre nirapekṣatvam ante ca virāmābhīpsetyetad upapannam iti tacca na sāmānye api bhrāntisaṃskāre kulālacakrasya bhramarakasya vā bhrāntāv eva vartamānasya prārambhe mandavegatā tataśca krameṇa pūraṇam vegasyetyupapadyate dhātukṣayācca virāmābhīpseti tasmād anākṣepaḥ suratānte sukhaṃ puṃsāṃ strīṇāṃ tu satataṃ sukham dhātukṣayanimittā ca virāmecchopajāyate tasmāt puruṣavad eva yoṣito 'pi rasavyaktir draṣṭavyā kathaṃ hi samānāyām evākṛtāvekārtham abhiprapannayoḥ kāryavailakṣaṇyaṃ syād upāyavailakṣaṇyād abhimānavailakṣaṇyācca katham upāyavailakṣaṇyaṃ tu sargāt kartā hi puruṣo 'dhikaraṇaṃ yuvatiḥ anyathā hi kartā kriyāṃ pratipadyate anyathā cādhāraḥ tasmāccopāyavailakṣaṇyāt sargād abhimānavailakṣaṇyam api bhavati abhiyoktāham iti puruṣo 'nurajyate abhiyuktāham aneneti yuvatir iti vātsyāyanaḥ tatraitat syād upāyavailakṣaṇyavad eva hi kāryavailakṣaṇyam api kasmān na syād iti tacca na hetumad upāyavailakṣaṇyam tatra kartrādhārayor bhinnalakṣaṇatvād ahetumat kāryavailakṣaṇyam anyāyyaṃ syāt ākṛter abhedād iti tatraitat syāt saṃhatya kārakair eko 'rtho 'bhinirvartyate pṛthak pṛthak svārthasādhakau punar imau tad ayuktam iti tacca na yugapad anekārthasiddhir api dṛśyate yathā meṣayor abhighāte kapitthayor bhede mallayor yuddha iti na tatra kārakabheda iti ced ihāpi na vastubheda iti upāyavailakṣaṇyaṃ tu sargād iti tad abhihitaṃ purastāt tenobhayor api sadṛśī sukhapratipattir iti jāter abhedād daṃpatyoḥ sadṛśaṃ sukham iṣyate tasmāt tathopacaryā strī yathāgre prāpnuyād ratim sadṛśatvasya siddhatvāt kālayogīnyapi bhāvato 'pi kālataḥ pramāṇavad eva nava ratāni raso ratiḥ prītir bhāvo rāgo vegaḥ samāptir iti ratiparyāyāḥ saṃprayogo rataṃ rahaḥ śayanaṃ mohanaṃ surataparyāyāḥ pramāṇakālabhāvajānāṃ saṃprayogāṇām ekaikasya navavidhatvāt teṣāṃ vyatikare suratasaṃkhyā na śakyate kartum atibahutvāt teṣu tarkād upacārān prayojayed iti vātsyāyanaḥ prathamarate caṇḍavegatā śīghrakālatā ca puruṣasya tad viparītam uttareṣu yoṣitaḥ punar etad eva viparītam ā dhātukṣayāt prāk ca strīdhātukṣayāt puruṣadhātukṣaya iti prāyovādaḥ mṛdutvād upamṛdyatvān nisargāccaiva yoṣitaḥ prāpnuvantyāśu tāḥ prītim ityācāryā vyavasthitāḥ etāvad eva yuktānāṃ vyākhyātaṃ sāṃprayogikam mandānām avabodhārthaṃ vistaro 'taḥ pravakṣyate abhyāsād abhimānācca tathā saṃpratyayād api viṣayebhyaśca tantrajñāḥ prītim āhuścaturvidhām śabdādibhyo bahirbhūtā yā karmābhyāsalakṣaṇā prītiḥ sābhyāsikī jñeyā mṛgayādiṣu karmasu anabhyasteṣvapi purā karmasv aviṣayātmikā saṃkalpājjāyate prītir yā sā syād ābhimānikī prakṛter yā tṛtīyasyāḥ striyāś caivopariṣṭake teṣu teṣu ca vijñeyā cumbanādiṣu karmasu nānyo 'yam iti yatra syād anyasmin prītikāraṇe tantrajñaiḥ kathyate sāpi prītiḥ saṃpratyayātmikā pratyakṣā lokataḥ siddhā yā prītir viṣayātmikā pradhānaphalavattvāt sā tadarthāś cetarā api prītīr etāḥ parāmṛśya śāstrataḥ śāstralakṣaṇāḥ yo yathā vartate bhāvastaṃ tathaiva prayojayet saṃprayogāṅgaṃ catuḥṣaṣṭir ityācakṣate catuḥṣaṣṭiprakaraṇatvāt śāstram evedaṃ catuḥṣaṣṭir ityācāryavādaḥ kalānāṃ catuḥṣaṣṭitvāt tāsāṃ ca saṃprayogāṅgabhūtatvāt kalāsamūho vā catuḥṣaṣṭir iti ṛcāṃ daśatayīnāṃ ca saṃjñitatvāt ihāpi tadarthasaṃbandhāt pañcālasaṃbandhācca bahvṛcair eṣā pūjārthaṃ saṃjñā pravartitā ityeke āliṅganacumbananakhacchedyadaśanacchedyasaṃveśanaśītkṛtapuruṣāyitopariṣṭakānām aṣṭānām aṣṭadhā vikalpabhedād aṣṭāvaṣṭakāścatuḥṣaṣṭir iti bābhravīyāḥ vikalpavargāṇām aṣṭānāṃ nyūnādhikatvadarśanāt prahaṇanavirutapuruṣopasṛptacitraratādīnām anyeṣām api vargāṇām iha praveśanāt prāyovādo 'yam yathā saptaparṇo vṛkṣaḥ pañcavarṇo balir iti vātsyāyanaḥ tatrāsamāgatayoḥ prītiliṅgadyotanārtham āliṅganacatuṣṭayam spṛṣṭakam viddhakam uddhṛṣṭakaṃ pīḍitakam iti sarvatra saṃjñārthenaiva karmātideśaḥ saṃmukhāgatāyāṃ prayojyāyām anyāpadeśena gacchato gātreṇa gātrasya sparśanaṃ spṛṣṭakam prayojyaṃ sthitam upaviṣṭaṃ vā vijane kiṃcid gṛhṇatī payodhareṇa vidhyet nāyako 'pi tām avapīḍya gṛhṇīyād iti viddhakam tadubhayam anatipravṛttasaṃbhāṣaṇayoḥ tamasi janasambādhe vijane vātha śanakair gacchator nātihrasvakālam uddharṣaṇaṃ parasparasya gātrāṇām uddhṛṣṭakam tad eva kuḍyasaṃdaṃśena stambhasaṃdaṃśena vā sphuṭakam avapīḍayed iti pīḍitakam tad ubhayam avagataparasparākārayoḥ latāveṣṭitakaṃ vṛkṣādhirūḍhakaṃ tilataṇḍulakaṃ kṣīranīrakam iti catvāri saṃprayogakāle lateva śālam āveṣṭayantī cumbanārthaṃ mukham avanamayet uddhṛtya mandaśītkṛtā tam āśritā vā kiṃcid rāmaṇīyakaṃ paśyet tallatāveṣṭitakam caraṇena caraṇam ākramya dvitīyenorudeśam ākramantī veṣṭayantī vā tatpṛṣṭhasaktaikabāhur dvitīyenāṃsam avanamayantī īṣanmandaśītkṛtakūjitā cumbanārtham evādhiroḍhum icched iti vṛkṣādhirūḍhakam tad ubhayaṃ sthitakarma śayanagatāv evorūvyatyāsaṃ bhujavyatyāsaṃ ca sasaṃgharṣam iva ghanaṃ saṃsvajete tattilataṇḍulakam rāgāndhāv anapekṣitātyayau parasparam anuviśata ivotsaṅgagatāyām abhimukhopaviṣṭāyāṃ śayane veti kṣīrajalakam tadubhayaṃ rāgakāle ityupasūhanayogā bābhravīyāḥ suvarṇanābhasya tvadhikam ekāṅgopagūhanacatuṣṭayam tatrorusaṃdaṃśenaikam ūrum ūrudvayaṃ vā sarvaprāṇaṃ pīḍayet ityūrūpagūhanam jaghanena jaghanam avapīḍya prakīryamāṇakeśahastā nakhadaśanaprahaṇanacumbanaprayojanāya tadupari laṅghayet tajjaghanopagūhanam stanābhyām uraḥ praviśya tatraiva bhāram āropayed iti stanāliṅganam mukhe mukham āsajyākṣiṇī akṣṇor lalāṭena lalāṭam āhanyāt sā lalāṭikā saṃvāhanam apyupagūhanaprakāram ityeke manyante saṃsparśatvāt pṛthak kālatvād bhinnaprayojanatvād asādhāraṇatvān neti vātsyāyanaḥ pṛcchatāṃ śṛṇvatāṃ vāpi tathā kathayatām api upagūhavidhiṃ kṛtsnaṃ riraṃsā jāyate nṛṇām ye api hyaśāstritāḥ kecit saṃyogā rāgavardhanāḥ ādareṇaiva te apyatra prayojyāḥ sāṃprayogikāḥ śāstrāṇāṃ viṣayastāvad yāvan mandarasā narāḥ raticakre pravṛtte tu naiva śāstraṃ na ca kramaḥ cumbananakhadaśanacchedyānāṃ na paurvāparyam asti rāgayogāt prāksaṃyogād eṣāṃ prādhānyena prayogaḥ prahaṇanaśītkṛtayośca saṃprayoge sarvaṃ sarvatra rāgasyānapekṣitatvāt iti vātsyāyanaḥ tāni prathamarate nātivyaktāni viśrabdhikāyāṃ vikalpena ca prayuñjīta tathābhūtatvād rāgasya tataḥ param atitvarayā viśeṣavatsamuccayena rāgasaṃdhukṣaṇārtham lalāṭālakakapolanayanavakṣaḥstanauṣṭhāntarmukheṣu cumbanam ūrusaṃdhibāhunābhimūlayor lāṭānām rāgavaśād deśapravṛtteśca santi tāni tāni sthānāni na tu sarvajanaprayojyānīti vātsyāyanaḥ tad yathā nimittakaṃ sphuritakaṃ ghaṭṭitakam iti trīṇi kanyācumbanāni balāt kāreṇa niyuktā mukhe mukham ādhatte na tu viceṣṭata iti nimittakam vadane praveśitaṃ cauṣṭhaṃ manāgapatrapāvagrahītum icchantī syandayati svam oṣṭhaṃ nottaram utsahata iti sphuritakam īṣatparigṛhya vinimīlitanayanā kareṇa ca tasya nayane avacchādayantī jihvāgreṇa ghaṭṭayati iti ghaṭṭitakam samaṃ tiryag udbhrāntam avapīḍitakam iti caturvidham apare aṅgulisaṃpuṭena piṇḍīkṛtya nirdaśanam oṣṭhapuṭenāvapīḍayed ityavapīḍitakaṃ pañcamam api karaṇam dyūtaṃ cātra pravartayet pūrvam adharasaṃpādanena jitam idaṃ syāt tatra jitā sārdharuditaṃ karaṃ vidhunuyāt praṇuded daśet parivartayed balād āhṛtā vivadet punar apyastu paṇa iti brūyāt tatrāpi jitā dviguṇam āyasyet viśrabdhasya pramattasya vādharam avagṛhya daśanāntargatam anirgamaṃ kṛtvā hased utkrośet tarjayed valged āhvayennṛtyet pranartitabhruṇā ca vicalanayanena mukhena vihasantī tāni tāni ca brūyāt iti cumbanadyūtakalahaḥ etena nakhadaśanacchedyaprahaṇanadyūtakalahā vyākhyātāḥ caṇḍavegayor eva tveṣāṃ prayogaḥ tatsātmyāt tasyāṃ cumbantyāmayam apyuttaraṃ gṛhṇīyāt ityuttaracumbitam oṣṭhasaṃdaṃśenāvagṛhyauṣṭhadvayam api cumbeta iti saṃpuṭakaṃ striyāḥ puṃso vā ajātavyañjanasya tasminn itaro 'pi jihvayāsyā daśanān ghaṭṭayet tālu jihvāṃ ceti jihvāyuddham etena balād vadanaradanagrahaṇaṃ dānaṃ ca vyākhyātam samaṃ pīḍitam añcitaṃ mṛdu śeṣāṅgeṣu cumbanaṃ sthānaviśeṣayogāt iti cumbanaviśeṣāḥ suptasya mukham avalokayantyāḥ svābhiprāyeṇa cumbanaṃ rāgadīpanam pramattasya vivadamānasya vā anyato 'bhimukhasya suptābhimukhasya vā nidrāvyāghātārthaṃ calitakam cirarātrāv āgatasya śayanasuptāyāḥ svābhiprāyacumbanaṃ prātibodhikam sāpi tu bhāvajijñāsārthinī nāyakasyāgamanakālaṃ saṃlakṣya vyājena suptā syāt ādarśe kuḍye salile vā prayojyāyāśchāyācumbanam ākārapradarśanārtham eva kāryam bālasya citrakarmaṇaḥ pratimāyāśca cumbanaṃ saṃkrāntakam āliṅganaṃ ca tathā niśi prekṣaṇake svajanasamāje vā samīpe gatasya prayojyāyā hastāṅgulicumbanaṃ saṃviṣṭasya vā pādāṅgulicumbanam saṃvāhikāyāstu nāyakam ākārayantyā nidrāvaśād akāmāyā iva tasyorvor vadanasya nidhānam ūrucumbanaṃ pādāṅguṣṭhacumbanaṃ cetyābhiyogikāni bhavati cātra ślokaḥ kṛte pratikṛtaṃ kuryāt tāḍite pratitāḍitam karaṇena ca tenaiva cumbite praticumbitam rāgavṛddhau saṃgharṣātmakaṃ nakhavilekhanam tasya prathamasamāgame pravāsapratyāgamane pravāsagamane kruddhaprasannāyāṃ mattāyāṃ ca prayogaḥ na nityam acaṇḍavegayoḥ tathā daśanachedyasya sātmyavaśād vā tadācchuritakam ardhacandro maṇḍalaṃ rekhā vyāghranakhaṃ mayūrapadakaṃ śaśaplutakam utpalapatrakam iti rūpato 'ṣṭavikalpam kakṣau stanau galaḥ pṛṣṭhaṃ jaghanam ūrū ca sthānāni pravṛttaraticakrāṇāṃ na sthānam asthānaṃ vā vidyata iti suvarṇanābhaḥ tatra savyahastāni pratyagraśikharāṇi dvitriśikharāṇi caṇḍavegayor nakhāni syuḥ anugatarāji samam ujjvalam amalinam avipāṭitaṃ vivardhiṣṇu mṛdusnigdhadarśanam iti nakhaguṇāḥ dīrghāṇi hastaśobhīnyāloke ca yoṣitāṃ cittagrāhīṇi gauḍānāṃ nakhāni syuḥ hrasvāni karmasahiṣṇūni vikalpayojanāsu ca svecchāpātīni dākṣiṇātyānām madhyamānyubhayabhāñji mahārāṣṭrakāṇām iti taiḥ suniyamitair hanudeśe stanayor adhare vā laghukaraṇam anudgatalekhaṃ sparśamātrajananād romāñcakaram ante saṃnipātavardhamānaśabdam ācchuritakam prayojyāyāṃ ca tasyāṅgasaṃvāhane śirasaḥ kaṇḍūyane piṭakabhedane vyākulīkaraṇe bhīṣaṇena prayogaḥ grīvāyāṃ stanapṛṣṭhe ca vakro nakhapadaniveśo 'rdhacandrakaḥ tāveva dvau parasparābhimukhau maṇḍalam nābhimūlakakundaravaṅkṣaṇeṣu tasya prayogaḥ sarvasthāneṣu nātidīrghā lekhā saiva vakrā vyāghranakhakam ā stanamukham pañcabhir abhimukhair lekhā cūcukābhimukhī mayūrapadakam tatsaṃprayogaślāghāyāḥ stanacūcuke saṃnikṛṣṭāni pañcanakhapadāni śaśaplutakam stanapṛṣṭhe mekhalāpathe cotpalapattrākṛtītyutpalapatrakam ūrvoḥ stanapṛṣṭhe ca pravāsaṃ gacchataḥ smāraṇīyakaṃ saṃhatāścatasrastisro vā lekhāḥ iti nakhakarmāṇi ākṛtivikārayuktāni cānyānyapi kurvīta vikalpānām anantatvād ānantyācca kauśalavidher abhyāsasya ca sarvagāmitvād rāgātmakatvācchedyasya prakārān ko 'bhisamīkṣitum arhatītyācāryāḥ bhavati hi rāge api citrāpekṣā vaicitryācca parasparaṃ rāgo janayitavyaḥ vaicakṣaṇyayuktāśca gaṇikāstatkāminaśca parasparaṃ prārthanīyā bhavanti dhanurvedādiṣvapi hi śastrakarmaśāstreṣu vaicitryam evāpekṣyate kiṃ punar iheti vātsyāyanaḥ na tu paraparigṛhītāsv evaṃ kuryāt pracchanneṣu pradeśeṣu tāsām anusmaraṇārthaṃ rāgavardhanācca viśeṣān darśayet nakhakṣatāni paśyantyā gūḍhasthāneṣu yoṣitaḥ cirotsṛṣṭāpyabhinavā prītir bhavati peśalā cirotsṛṣṭeṣu rāgeṣu prītir gacchet parābhavam rāgāyatanasaṃsmāri yadi na syān nakhakṣatam paśyato yuvatiṃ dūrān nakhocchiṣṭapayodharām bahumānaḥ parasyāpi rāgayogaśca jāyate puruṣaśca pradeśeṣu nakhacihnair vicihnitaḥ cittaṃ sthiram api prāyaścalayatyeva yoṣitaḥ nānyat paṭutaraṃ kiṃcid asti rāgavivardhanam nakhadantasamutthānāṃ karmaṇāṃ gatayo yathā uttarauṣṭham antarmukhaṃ nayanam iti muktvā cumbanavad daśanaradanasthānāni samāḥ snigdhacchāyā rāgagrāhiṇo yuktapramāṇā niśchidrāstīkṣṇāgrā iti daśanaguṇāḥ kuṇṭhā rājyudgatāḥ paruṣāḥ viṣamāḥ ślakṣṇāḥ pṛthavo viralā iti ca doṣāḥ gūḍhakam ucchūnakaṃ bindur bindumālā pravālamaṇir maṇimālā khaṇḍābhrakaṃ varāhacarvitakam iti daśanacchedanavikalpāḥ nātilohitena rāgamātreṇa vibhāvanīyaṃ gūḍhakam tad eva pīḍanād ucchūnakam tad ubhayaṃ bindur adharamadhya iti ucchūnakaṃ pravālamaṇiśca kapole karṇapūracumbanaṃ nakhadaśanacchedyam iti savyakapolamaṇḍanāni dantauṣṭhasaṃyogābhyāsaniṣpādanāt pravālamaṇisiddhiḥ sarvasyeyaṃ maṇimālāyāśca alpadeśāyāśca tvaco daśanadvayasaṃdaṃśajā bindusiddhiḥ sarvair bindumālāyāśca tasmān mālādvayam api galakakṣavaṅkṣaṇapradeśeṣu lalāṭe corvor bindumālā maṇḍalam iva viṣamakūṭakayuktaṃ khaṇḍābhrakaṃ stanapṛṣṭha eva saṃhatāḥ pradīrghā bahvyo daśanapadarājayas tāmrāntarālā varāhacarvitakam stanapṛṣṭha eva tadubhayam api ca caṇḍavegayoḥ iti daśanacchedyāni viśeṣake karṇapūre puṣpāpīḍe tāmbūlapalāśe tamālapattre ceti prayojyāgāmiṣu nakhadaśanacchedyādīnyābhiyogikāni deśasātmyācca yoṣita upacaret madhyadeśyā āryaprāyāḥ śucyupacarāś cumbananakhadantapadadveṣiṇyaḥ bāhlīkadeśyā āvantikāśca citrarateṣu tv āsām abhiniveśaḥ pariṣvaṅgacumbananakhadantacūṣaṇapradhānāḥ kṣatavarjitāḥ prahaṇanasādhyā mālavya ābhīryaśca sindhuṣaṣṭhānāṃ ca nadīnām antarālīyā aupariṣṭakasātmyāḥ caṇḍavegā mandaśītkṛtā āparāntikā lāṭhyaśca dṛḍhaprahaṇanayoginyaḥ kharavegā eva apadravyapradhānāḥ strīrājye kosalāyāṃ ca prakṛtyā mṛdvyo ratipriyā aśucirucayo nirācārāścāndhryaḥ sakalacatuḥṣaṣṭiprayogarāgiṇyo 'ślīlaparuṣavākyapriyāḥ śayane ca sarabhasopakramā mahārāṣṭrikāḥ tathāvidhā eva rahasi prakāśante nāgarikāḥ mṛdyamānāścābhiyogān mandaṃ mandaṃ prasiñcante draviḍyaḥ madhyamavegāḥ sarvaṃsahāḥ svāṅgaprachādinyaḥ parāṅgahāsinyaḥ kutsitāślīlaparuṣaparihāriṇyo vānavāsikāḥ mṛdubhāṣiṇyo 'nurāgavatyo mṛdvyaṅgyaśca gauḍyaḥ deśasātmyāt prakṛtisātmyaṃ balīya iti suvarṇanābhaḥ na tatra deśyā upacārāḥ kālayogācca deśād deśāntaram upacāraveṣalīlāś cānugacchanti tacca vidyāt upagūhanādiṣu ca rāgavardhanaṃ pūrvaṃ pūrvaṃ vicitram uttaram uttaraṃ ca vāryamāṇaśca puruṣo yat kuryāt tad anu kṣatam amṛṣyamāṇā dviguṇaṃ tad eva pratiyojayet bindoḥ pratikriyā mālā mālāyāścābhrakhaṇḍakam iti krodhādivāviṣṭā kalahān pratiyojayet sakacagraham unnamya mukhaṃ tasya tataḥ pibet nilīyeta daśeccaiva tatra tatra maderitā unnamya kaṇṭhe kāntasya saṃśritā vakṣasaḥ sthalīm maṇimālāṃ prayuñjīta yaccānyad api lakṣitam divāpi janasaṃbādhe nāyakena pradarśitam uddiśya svakṛtaṃ cihnaṃ hased anyair alakṣitā vikūṇayantīva mukhaṃ kutsayantīva nāyakam svagātrasthāni cihnāni sāsūyeva pradarśayet parasparānukūlyena tad evaṃ lajjamānayoḥ saṃvatsaraśatenāpi prītir na parihīyate rāgakāle viśālayantyeva jaghanaṃ mṛgī saṃviśed uccarate avahrāsayantīva hastinī nīcarate nyāyyo yatra yogastatra samapṛṣṭham ābhyāṃ vaḍavā vyākhyātā tatra jaghanena nāyakaṃ pratigṛhṇīyāt apadravyāṇi ca saviśeṣaṃ nīcarate utphullakaṃ vijṛmbhitakam indrāṇikaṃ ceti tritayaṃ mṛgyāḥ prāyeṇa śiro vinipātyordhvaṃ jaghanam utphullakam tatrāpasāraṃ dadyāt anīce sakthinī tiryag avasajya pratīcched iti vijṛmbhitakam pārśvayoḥ samam ūrū vinyasya pārśvayor jānunī nidadhyād ityabhyāsayogād indrāṇī tayoccatararatasyāpi parigrahaḥ saṃpuṭena pratigraho nīcarate etena nīcatararate api hastinyāḥ saṃpuṭakaṃ pīḍitakaṃ veṣṭitakaṃ vāḍavakam iti ṛjuprasāritāv ubhāvapyubhayoścaraṇāv iti saṃpuṭaḥ sa dvividhaḥ pārśvasaṃpuṭa uttānasaṃpuṭaśca tathā karmayogāt pārśveṇa tu śayāno dakṣiṇena nārīm adhiśayīteti sārvatrikam etat saṃpuṭakaprayuktayantreṇaiva dṛḍham ūrū pīḍayed iti pīḍitakam ūrū vyatyasyed iti veṣṭitakam vaḍaveva niṣṭhuram avagṛhṇīyād iti vāḍavakam ābhyāsikam tadāndhrīṣu prāyeṇa iti saṃveśanaprakārā bābhravīyāḥ sauvarṇanābhāstu ubhāvapyūrū ūrdhvāv iti tad bhugnakam caraṇāv ūrdhvaṃ nāyako 'syā dhārayed iti jṛmbhitakam tatkuñcitāv utpīḍitakam tad ekasmin prasārite ardhapīḍitakam nāyakasyāṃsa eko dvitīyakaḥ prasārita iti punaḥ punar vyatyāsena veṇudāritakam ekaḥ śirasa upari gacched dvitīyaḥ prasārita iti śūlacitakam ābhyāsikam saṃkucitau svabastideśe nidadhyād iti kārkaṭakam ūrdhvāv ūrū vyatyasyed iti pīḍitakam jaṅghāvyatyāsena padmāsanavat pṛṣṭhaṃ pariṣvajamānāyāḥ parāṅmukheṇa parāvṛttakam ābhyāsikam jale ca saṃviṣṭopaviṣṭasthitātmakāṃścitrān yogān upalakṣayet tathā sukaratvād iti suvarṇanābhaḥ vārttaṃ tu tat śiṣṭair apasmṛtatvād iti vātsyāyanaḥ atha citraratāni ūrdhvasthitayor yūnoḥ parasparāpāśrayayoḥ kuḍyastambhāpāśritayor vā sthitaratam kuḍyāpāśritasya kaṇṭhāvasaktabāhupāśāyās taddhastapañjaropaviṣṭāyā ūrupāśena jaghanam abhiveṣṭayantyā kuḍye caraṇakrameṇa valantyā avalambitakaṃ ratam bhūmau vā catuṣpadavad āsthitāyā vṛṣalīlayāvaskandanaṃ dhenukam tatra pṛṣṭham uraḥkarmāṇi labhate etenaiva yogena śaunam aiṇeyaṃ chāgalaṃ gardabhākrāntaṃ mārjāralalitakaṃ vyāghrāvaskandanaṃ gajopamarditaṃ varāhaghṛṣṭakaṃ turagādhirūḍhakam iti yatra yatra viśeṣo yogo 'pūrvastat tad upalakṣayet miśrīkṛtasadbhāvābhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ saha saṃghāṭakaṃ ratam bahvībhiś ca saha goyūthikam vārikrīḍitakaṃ chāgalamaiṇeyam iti tatkarmānukṛtiyogāt grāmanāriviṣaye strīrājye ca bāhlīke bahavo yuvāno 'ntaḥpurasadharmāṇa ekaikasyāḥ parigrahabhūtāḥ teṣām ekaikaśo yugapacca yathāsātmyaṃ yathāyogaṃ ca rañjayeyuḥ eko dhārayed enām anyo niṣeveta anyo jaghanamukham anyo madhyam anya iti vāraṃ vāreṇa vyatikareṇa cānutiṣṭheyuḥ etayā goṣṭhīparigrahā veśyā rājayoṣāparigrahaś ca vyākhyātaḥ aghorataṃ pāyāvapi dākṣiṇātyānām iti citraratāni puruṣopasṛptakāni puruṣāyite vakṣyāmaḥ bhavataścātra ślokau paśūnāṃ mṛgajātīnāṃ pataṅgānāṃ ca vibhramaiḥ taistair upāyaiścittajño ratiyogān vivardhayet tatsātmyād deśasātmyācca taistair bhāvaiḥ prayojitaiḥ strīṇāṃ snehaśca rāgaśca bahumānaśca jāyate kalaharūpaṃ suratam ācakṣate vivādātmakatvād vāmaśīlatvācca kāmasya tasmāt prahaṇanasthānam aṅgam skandhau śiraḥ stanāntaraṃ pṛṣṭhaṃ jaghanaṃ pārśva iti sthānāni taccaturvidham apahastakaṃ prasṛtakaṃ muṣṭiḥ samatalakam iti tadudbhavaṃ ca śītkṛtam tasyātirūpatvāt tad anekavidham virutāni cāṣṭau amvārthāḥ śabdā vāraṇārthā mokṣaṇārthāścālam arthāste te cārthayogāt pārāvataparabhṛtahārītaśukamadhukaradātyūhahaṃsakāraṇḍavalāvakavirutāni śītkṛtabhūyiṣṭhāni vikalpaśaḥ prayuñjīta utsaṅgopaviṣṭāyāḥ pṛṣṭhe muṣṭinā prahāraḥ tatra sāsūyāyā iva stanitaruditakūjitāni pratīghātaśca syāt yuktayantrāyāḥ stanāntare apahastakena praharet mandopakramaṃ vardhamānarāgam ā parisamāpteḥ tatra hiṃkārādīnām aniyamenābhyāsena vikalpena ca tatkālam eva prayogaḥ śirasi kiṃcid ākuñcitāṅgulinā kareṇa vivadantyāḥ phūtkṛtya prahaṇanaṃ tat prasṛtakam tatrāntarmukhena kūjitaṃ phūtkṛtaṃ ca ratānte ca śvasitarudite veṇor iva sphuṭataḥ śabdānukaraṇaṃ dūtkṛtam apsu badarasyeva nipatataḥ phūtkṛtam sarvatra cumbanādiṣvapakrāntāyāḥ saśītkṛtaṃ tenaiva pratyuttaram rāgavaśāt prahaṇanābhyāse vāraṇamokṣaṇālam arthānāṃ śabdānām ambārthānāṃ ca satāntaśvasitaruditastanitamiśrīkṛtaprayogā virutānāṃ ca rāgāvasānakāle jaghanapārśvayostāḍanam ityatitvarayā ca ā parisamāpteḥ tatra lāvakahaṃsavikūjitaṃ tvarayaiva iti stananaprahaṇanayogāḥ pāruṣyaṃ rabhasatvaṃ ca pauruṣaṃ teja ucyate aśaktir ārtirvyāvṛttir abalatvaṃ ca yoṣitaḥ rāgāt prayogasātmyācca vyatyayo 'pi kvacid bhavet na ciraṃ tasya caivānte prakṛter eva yojanam kīlām urasi kartarīṃ śirasi viddhāṃ kapolayoḥ saṃdaṃśikāṃ stanayoḥ pārśvayośceti pūrvaiḥ saha prahaṇanam aṣṭavidham iti dākṣiṇātyānām tadyuvatīnām urasi kīlāni ca tatkṛtāni dṛśyante deśasātmyam etat kaṣṭam anāryavṛttam anādṛtam iti vātsyāyanaḥ tathānyad api deśasātmyāt prayuktam anyatra na prayuñjīt ātyayikaṃ tu tatrāpi pariharet ratiyoge hi kīlayā gaṇikāṃ citrasenāṃ colarājo jaghāna kartaryā kuntalaḥ śātakarṇiḥ śātavāhano mahādevīṃ malayavatīm naradevaḥ kupāṇir viddhayā duṣprayuktayā naṭīṃ kāṇāṃ cakāra bhavanti cātra ślokāḥ nāstyatra gaṇanā kācin na ca śāstraparigrahaḥ pravṛtte ratisaṃyoge rāga evātra kāraṇam svapneṣvapi na dṛśyante te bhāvāste ca vibhramāḥ suratavyavahāreṣu ye syustatkṣaṇakalpitāḥ yathā hi pañcamīṃ dhārām āsthāya turagaḥ pathi sthāṇum śvabhraṃ darīṃ vāpi vegāndho na samīkṣate evaṃ suratasaṃmarde rāgāndhau kāmināvapi caṇḍavegau pravartete samīkṣete na cātyayam tasmān mṛdutvaṃ caṇḍatvaṃ yuvatyā balam eva ca ātmanaśca balaṃ jñātvā tathā yuñjīta śāstravit na sarvadā na sarvāsu prayogāḥ sāṃprayogikāḥ sthāne deśe ca kāle ca yoga eṣāṃ vidhīyate nāyakasya saṃtatābhyāsāt pariśramam upalabhya rāgasya cānupaśamam anumatā tena tam adho 'vapātya puruṣāyitena sāhāyyaṃ dadyāt svābhiprāyād vā vikalpayojanārthinī nāyakakutūhalād vā tatra yuktayantreṇaivetareṇotthāpyamānā tamadhaḥ pātayet evaṃ ca ratam avicchinnarasaṃ tathā pravṛttam eva syāt ityeko 'yaṃ mārgaḥ punar ārambheṇādita evopakramet iti dvitīyaḥ sā prakīryamāṇakeśakusumā śvāsavicchinnahāsinī vaktrasaṃsargārthaṃ stanābhyām uraḥ pīḍayantī punaḥ punaḥ śiro nāmayantī yāśceṣṭāḥ pūrvam aṃsau darśitavāṃstā eva pratikurvīta pātitā pratipātayāmīti hasantī tarjayantī pratighnatī ca brūyāt punaśca vrīḍāṃ darśayet śramaṃ virāmābhīpsāṃ ca puruṣopasṛptair evopasarpet tāni ca vakṣyāmaḥ puruṣaḥ śayanasthāyā yoṣitastad vacanavyākṣiptacittāyā iva nīvīṃ viśleṣayet tatra vivadamānāṃ kapolacumbanena paryākulayet sthiraliṅgaśca tatra tatraināṃ parispṛśet prathamasaṃgatā cet saṃhatorvor antare ghaṭṭanam kanyāyāśca tathā stanayoḥ saṃhatayor hastayoḥ kakṣayor aṃsayor grīvāyām iti ca svairiṇyāṃ yathāsātmyaṃ yathāyogaṃ ca alake cumbanārtham enāṃ nirdayam avalambet hanudeśe cāṅgulisaṃpuṭena tatretarasyā vrīḍā nimīlanaṃ ca prathamasamāgame kanyāyāśca ratisaṃyoge caināṃ katham anurajyata iti pravṛttyā parīkṣeta yuktayantreṇopasṛpyamāṇā yato dṛṣṭim āvartayet tata evaināṃ pīḍayet etad rahasyaṃ yuvatīnām iti suvarṇanābhaḥ gātrāṇāṃ sraṃsanaṃ netranimīlanaṃ vrīḍānāśaḥ samadhikā ca ratiyojaneti strīṇāṃ bhāvalakṣaṇam hastau vidhunoti svidyati daśatyutthātuṃ na dadāti pādenāhanti ratāvamāne ca puruṣātivartinī tasyāḥ prāgyantrayogāt kareṇa saṃbādhaṃ gaja eva kṣobhayet ā mṛdubhāvāt tato yantrayojanam upasṛptakaṃ manthanaṃ hulo 'vamardanaṃ pīḍitakaṃ nirghāto varāhaghāto vṛṣāghātaścaṭakavilasitaṃ saṃpuṭa iti puruṣopasṛptāni nyāyyam ṛjusaṃmiśraṇam upasṛptakam hastena liṅgaṃ sarvato bhrāmayet iti manthanam nīcīkṛtya jaghanam upariṣṭād ghaṭṭayed iti hulaḥ tad eva viparītaṃ sarabhasamavamardanam liṅgena samāhatya pīḍayaṃściram avatiṣṭhed iti pīḍitakam sudūram utkṛṣya vegena svajaghanam avapātayed iti nirghātaḥ ekata eva bhūyiṣṭham avalikhed iti varāhaghātaḥ sa evobhayataḥ paryāyeṇa vṛṣāghātaḥ sakṛnmiśritam aniṣkramayya dvistriścatur iti ghaṭṭayed iti caṭakavilasitam rāgāvasānikaṃ vyākhyātaṃ karaṇaṃ saṃpuṭam iti teṣāṃ strīsātmyād vikalpena prayogaḥ puruṣāyite tu saṃdaṃśo bhramarakaḥ preṅkholitam ityadhikāni vāḍavena liṅgam avagṛhya niṣkarṣantyāḥ pīḍayantyā vā cirāvasthānaṃ saṃdaṃśaḥ yuktayantrā cakravad bhramed iti bhramaraka ābhyāsikaḥ tatretaraḥ svajaghanam utkṣipet jaghanam eva dolāyamānaṃ sarvato bhrāmayed iti preṅkholitakam yuktayantraiva lalāṭe lalāṭe nidhāya viśrāmyeta viśrāntāyāṃ ca puruṣasya punar āvartanam iti puruṣāyitāni bhavanti cātra ślokāḥ pracchāditasvabhāvāpi gūḍhākārāpi kāminī vivṛṇotyeva bhāvaṃ svaṃ rāgād uparivartinī yathāśīlā bhaven nārī yathā ca ratilālasā tasyā eva viceṣṭābhistatsarvam upalakṣayet na tv evartau na prasūtāṃ na mṛgīṃ na ca garbhiṇīm na cātivyāyatāṃ nārīṃ yojayet puruṣāyite dvividhā tṛtīyāprakṛtiḥ strīrūpiṇī puruṣarūpiṇī ca tatra strīrūpiṇī striyā veṣamālāpaṃ līlāṃ bhāvaṃ mṛdutvaṃ bhīrutvaṃ mugdhatām asahiṣṇutāṃ vrīḍāṃ cānukurvīta tasyā vadane jaghanakarma tadaupariṣṭakam ācakṣate sā tato ratim ābhimānikīṃ vṛttiṃ ca lipset veśyāvaccaritaṃ prakāśayet iti strīrūpiṇī puruṣarūpiṇī tu pracchannakāmā puruṣaṃ lipsamānā saṃvāhakabhāvam upajīvet saṃvāhane pariṣvajamāneva gātrair ūrū nāyakasya mṛdnīyāt prasṛtaparicayā corumūlaṃ sajaghanam iti saṃspṛśet tatra sthiraliṅgatām upalabhya cāsya pāṇimanthena parighaṭṭayet cāpalam asya kutsayantīva haset kṛtalakṣaṇenāpyupalabdhavaikṛtenāpi na codyata iti cet svayam upakramet puruṣeṇa ca codyamānā vivadet kṛcchreṇa cābhyupagacchet tatra karmāṣṭavidhaṃ samuccayaprayojyam nimitaṃ pārśvatodaṣṭaṃ bahiḥsaṃdaṃśo 'ntaḥsaṃdaṃśaś cumbitakaṃ parimṛṣṭakam āmracūṣitakaṃ saṃgara iti teṣv ekaikam abhyupagamya virāmābhīpsāṃ darśayet itaraśca pūrvasminn abhyupagate taduttaram evāparaṃ nirdiśet tasminn api siddhe taduttaram iti karāvalambitam oṣṭhayor upari vinyastam apavidhya mukhaṃ vidhunuyāt tan nimitam hasteṇāgram avacchādya pārśvato nirdaśanam oṣṭhābhyām avapīḍya bhavatv etāvad iti sāntvayet tat pārśvatodaṣṭam bhūyaścoditā saṃmīlitauṣṭhī tasyāgraṃ niṣpīḍya karṣayantīva cumbet iti bahiḥsaṃdaṃśaḥ tasminn evābhyarthanayā kiṃcid adhikaṃ praveśayet ity antaḥsaṃdaṃśaḥ karāvalambitasyauṣṭhavad grahaṇaṃ cumbitakam tat kṛtvā jihvāgreṇa sarvato ghaṭṭanam agre ca vyadhanam iti parimṛṣṭakam tathābhūtam eva rāgavaśād ardhapraviṣṭaṃ nirdayam avapīḍyāvapīḍya muñcet iti āmracūṣitakam puruṣābhiprāyād eva giret pīḍayecca ā parisamāpteḥ iti saṃgaraḥ yathārthaṃ cātra stananaprahaṇanayoḥ prayogaḥ ityaupariṣṭakam kulaṭāḥ svairiṇyaḥ paricārikāḥ saṃvāhikāścāpyetat prayojayanti tad etat tu na kāryam punar api hyāsāṃ vadanasaṃsarge svayam evārtiṃ prapadyeta ityācāryāḥ veśyākāmino 'yam adoṣaḥ iti vātsyāyanaḥ tasmād yāstvaupariṣṭakam ācaranti na tābhiḥ saha saṃsṛjyante prācyāḥ veśyābhir eva na saṃsṛjyante āhicchatrikāḥ saṃsṛṣṭā api mukhakarma tāsāṃ pariharanti nirapekṣāḥ sāketāḥ saṃsṛjyante na tu svayam aupariṣṭakam ācaranti nāgarakāḥ sarvam aviśaṅkayā prayojayanti saurasenāḥ evaṃ hyāhuḥ ko hi yoṣitāṃ śīlaṃ śaucam ācāraṃ caritraṃ pratyayaṃ vacanaṃ vā śraddhātum arhati nisargād eva hi malinadṛṣṭayo bhavantyetā na parityājyāḥ evaṃ hyāhuḥ vatsaḥ prasravaṇe medhyaḥ śvā mṛgagrahaṇe śuciḥ śakuniḥ phalapāte tu strīmukhaṃ ratisaṃgame śiṣṭavipratipatteḥ smṛtivākyasya ca sāvakāśatvād deśasthiter ātmanaśca vṛttipratyayānurūpaṃ pravarteta iti vātsyāyanaḥ bhavanti cātra ślokāḥ pramṛṣṭakuṇḍalāścāpi yuvānaḥ paricārakāḥ keṣāṃcid eva kurvanti narāṇām aupariṣṭakam tathā nāgarakāḥ kecid anyonyasya hitaiṣiṇaḥ kurvanti rūḍhaviśvāsāḥ parasparaparigraham puruṣāśca tathā strīṣu karmaitat kila kurvate vyāsastasya ca vijñeyo mukhacumbanavad vidhiḥ parivartitadehau tu strīpuṃsau yat parasparam yugapat samprayujyete sa kāmaḥ kākilaḥ smṛtaḥ tasmād guṇavatastyaktvā caturāṃstyāgino narān veśyāḥ khaleṣu rajyante dāsahastipakādiṣu na tv etad brāhmaṇo vidvān mantrī vā rājadhūrdharaḥ gṛhītapratyayo vāpi kārayed aupariṣṭakam na śāstram astītyetāvat prayoge kāraṇaṃ bhavet śāstrārthān vyāpino vidyāt prayogāṃstv ekadeśikān rasavīryavipākā hi śvamāṃsasyāpi vaidyake kīrtitā iti tat kiṃ syād bhakṣaṇīyaṃ vicakṣaṇaiḥ santyeva puruṣāḥ kecit santi deśāstathāvidhāḥ santi kālāśca yeṣv ete yogā na syur nirarthakāḥ tasmād deśaṃ ca kālaṃ ca prayogaṃ śāstram eva ca ātmānaṃ cāpi samprekṣya yogān yuñjīta vā na vā arthasyāsya rahasyatvāccalatvān manasastathā kaḥ kadā kiṃ kutaḥ kuryād iti ko jñātum arhati nāgarakaḥ saha mitrajanena paricārakaiśca kṛtapuṣpopahāre saṃcāritasurabhidhūpe ratyāvāse prasādhite vāsagṛhe kṛtasnānaprasādhanāṃ yuktyā pītāṃ striyaṃ sāntvanaiḥ punaḥ pānena copakramet dakṣiṇataścāsyā upaveśanam keśahaste vastrānte nīvyām ityavalambanam ratyarthaṃ savyena bāhunānuddhataḥ pariṣvaṅgaḥ pūrvaprakaraṇasambaddhaiḥ parihāsānurāgair vacobhir anuvṛttiḥ gūḍhāślīlānāṃ ca vastūnāṃ samasyayā paribhāṣaṇam sanṛttam anṛttaṃ vā gītaṃ vāditram kalāsu saṃkathāḥ punaḥ pānenopacchandanam jātānurāgāyāṃ kusumānulepanatāmbūladānena ca śeṣajanavisṛṣṭiḥ vijane ca yathoktair āliṅganādibhir enām uddharṣayet tato nīvīviśleṣaṇādi yathoktam upakrameta ityayaṃ ratārambhaḥ ratāvasānikaṃ rāgam ativāhyāsaṃstutayor iva savrīḍayoḥ parasparam apaśyatoḥ pṛthak pṛthag ācārabhūmigamanam pratinivṛttya cāvrīḍāyamānayor ucitadeśopaviṣṭayostāmbūlagrahaṇam acchīkṛtaṃ candanam anyad vānulepanaṃ tasyā gātre svayam eva niveśayet savyena bāhunā caināṃ parirabhya caṣakahastaḥ sāntvayan pāyayet jalānupānaṃ vā khaṇḍakhādyakam anyad vā prakṛtisātmyayuktam ubhāvapyupayuñjīyātām accharasakayūṣam amlayavāgūṃ bhṛṣṭamāṃsopadaṃśāni pānakāni cūtaphalāni śuṣkamāṃsaṃ mātuluṅgacukrakāṇi saśarkarāṇi ca yathādeśasātmyaṃ ca tatra madhuram idaṃ mṛdu viśadam iti ca vidaśya vidaśya tat tad upāharet harmyatalasthitayor vā candrikāsevanārtham āsanam tadaṅkasaṃlīnāyāścandramasaṃ paśyantyā nakṣatrapaṅktivyaktīkaraṇam arundhatīdhruvasaptarṣimālādarśanaṃ ca iti ratāvasānikam avasāne api ca prītir upacārair upaskṛtā savisrambhakathāyogai ratiṃ janayate parām parasparaprītikarair ātmabhāvānuvartanaiḥ kṣaṇāt krodhaparāvṛttaiḥ kṣaṇāt prītivilokitaiḥ hallīsakakrīḍanakair gāyanair lāṭarāsakaiḥ rāgalolārdranayanaiś candramaṇḍalavīkṣaṇaiḥ ādye saṃdarśane jāte pūrvaṃ ye syur manorathāḥ punarviyoge duḥkhaṃ ca tasya sarvasya kīrtanaiḥ kīrtanānte ca rāgeṇa pariṣvaṅgaiḥ sacumbanaiḥ taistaiśca bhāvaiḥ saṃyukto yūno rāgo vivardhate rāgavad āhāryarāgaṃ kṛtrimarāgaṃ vyavahitarāgaṃ poṭārataṃ khalaratam ayantritaratam iti rataviśeṣāḥ saṃdarśanāt prabhṛtyubhayor api pravṛddharāgayoḥ prayatnakṛte samāgame pravāsapratyāgamane vā kalahaviyogayoge tadrāgavat tatrātmābhiprāyād yāvadarthaṃ ca pravṛttiḥ madhyastharāgayor ārabdhaṃ yad anurajyate tad āhāryarāgam tatra cātuḥṣaṣṭikair yogaiḥ sātmyānuviddhaiḥ saṃdhukṣya saṃdhukṣya rāgaṃ pravarteta tatkāryahetor anyatra saktayor vā kṛtrimarāgam tatra samuccayena yogāñ śāstrataḥ paśyet puruṣastu hṛdayapriyām anyāṃ manasi nidhāya vyavaharet saṃprayogāt prabhṛti ratiṃ yāvat atastadvyavahitarāgam nyūnāyāṃ kumbhadāsyāṃ paricārikāyāṃ vā yāvadarthaṃ saṃprayogastatpoṭāratam tatropacārān nādriyeta tathā veśyāyā grāmīṇena saha yāvadarthaṃ khalaratam grāmavrajapratyantayoṣidbhiś ca nāgarakasya utpannavisrambhayośca parasparānukūlyād ayantritaratam iti ratāni vardhamānapraṇayā tu nāyikā sapatnīnām agrahaṇaṃ tadāśrayam ālāpaṃ vā gotraskhalitaṃ vā na marṣayet nāyakavyalīkaṃ ca tatra subhṛśaḥ kalaho ruditam āyāsaḥ śiroruhāṇām avakṣodanaṃ prahaṇanam āsanācchayanād vā mahyāṃ patanaṃ mālyabhūṣaṇāvamokṣo bhūmau śayyā ca tatra yuktarūpeṇa sāmnā pādapatanena vā prasannamanāstām anunayann upakramya śayanam ārohayet tasya ca vacanam uttareṇa yojayantī vivṛddhakrodhā sakacagraham asyāsyam unnamayya pādena bāhau śirasi vakṣasi pṛṣṭhe vā sakṛd dvistrir avahanyāt dvāradeśaṃ gacchet tatropaviśyāśrukaraṇam iti atikruddhāpi tu na dvāradeśād bhūyo gacchet doṣavattvāt iti dattakaḥ tatra yuktito 'nunīyamānā prasādam ākāṅkṣet prasannāpi tu sakaṣāyair eva vākyair enaṃ tudatīva prasannaratikāṅkṣiṇī nāyakena parirabhyeta svabhavanasthā tu nimittāt kalahitā tathāvidhaceṣṭaiva nāyakam abhigacchet tatra pīṭhamardaviṭavidūṣakair nāyakaprayuktair upaśamitaroṣā tair evānunītā taiḥ sahaiva tadbhavanam adhigacchet tatra ca vaset iti praṇayakalahaḥ bhavanti cātra ślokāḥ evam etāṃ catuḥṣaṣṭiṃ bābhravyeṇa prakīrtitām prayuñjāno varastrīṣu siddhiṃ gacchati nāyakaḥ bruvann apyanyaśāstrāṇi catuḥṣaṣṭivivarjitaḥ vidvatsaṃsadi nātyarthaṃ kathāsu paripūjyate varjito 'pyanyavijñānair etayā yastvalaṃkṛtaḥ sa goṣṭhyāṃ naranārīṇāṃ kathāsvagraṃ vigāhate vidvadbhiḥ pūjitām enāṃ khalair api supūjitām pūjitāṃ gaṇikāsaṃghair nandinīṃ ko na pūjayet nandinī subhagā siddhā subhagaṃkaraṇīti ca nārīpriyeti cācāryaiḥ śāstreṣv eṣā nirucyate kanyābhiḥ parayoṣidbhir gaṇikābhiśca bhāvataḥ vīkṣyate bahumānena catuḥṣaṣṭivicakṣaṇaḥ savarṇāyām ananyapūrvāyāṃ śāstrato 'dhigatāyāṃ dharmo 'rthaḥ putrāḥ saṃbandhaḥ pakṣavṛddhir anupaskṛtā ratiśca tasmāt kanyām abhijanopetāṃ mātāpitṛmatīṃ trivarṣāt prabhṛti nyūnavayasaṃ ślāghyācāre dhanavati pakṣavati kule saṃbandhipriye saṃbandhibhir ākule prasūtāṃ prabhūtamātṛpitṛpakṣāṃ rūpaśīlalakṣaṇasampannām anyūnādhikāvinaṣṭadantanakhakarṇakeśākṣistanīm arogiprakṛtiśarīrāṃ tathāvidha eva śrutavāñ śīlayet yāṃ gṛhītvā kṛtinam ātmānaṃ manyeta na ca samānair nindyeta tasyāṃ pravṛttir iti ghoṭakamukhaḥ tasyā varaṇe mātāpitarau saṃbandhinaśca prayateran mitrāṇi ca gṛhītavākyānyubhayasambaddhāni tānyanyeṣāṃ varayitṝṇāṃ doṣān pratyakṣānāgamikāṃśca śrāvayeyuḥ kaulān pauruṣeyān abhiprāyasaṃvardhakāṃśca nāyakaguṇān viśeṣataśca kanyāmātur anukūlāṃstadātvāyatiyuktān darśayeyuḥ daivacintakarūpaśca śakunanimittagrahalagnabalalakṣaṇadarśanena nāyakasya bhaviṣyantam arthasaṃyogaṃ kalyāṇam anuvarṇayet apare punar asyānyato viśiṣṭena kanyālābhena kanyāmātaram unmādayeyuḥ daivanimittaśakunopaśrutīnām ānulomyena kanyāṃ varayed dadyācca na yadṛcchayā kevalamānuṣāyeti ghoṭakamukhaḥ suptāṃ rudatīṃ niṣkrāntāṃ varaṇe parivarjayet apraśastanāmadheyāṃ ca guptāṃ dattāṃ ghonāṃ pṛṣatām ṛṣabhāṃ vinatāṃ vikaṭāṃ vimuṇḍāṃ śucidūṣitāṃ sāṃkarikīṃ rākāṃ phalīnīṃ mitrāṃ svanujām varṣakarīṃ ca varjayet nakṣatrākhyāṃ nadīnāmnīṃ vṛkṣanāmnīṃ ca garhitām lakārarephopāntāṃ ca varaṇe parivarjayet yasyāṃ manaścakṣuṣor nibandhastasyām ṛddhiḥ netarām ādriyeta ityeke tasmāt pradānasamaye kanyām udāraveṣāṃ sthāpayeyuḥ aparāhṇikaṃ ca nityaṃ prasādhitāyāḥ sakhībhiḥ saha krīḍā yajñavivāhādiṣu janasaṃdrāveṣu prāyatnikaṃ darśanam tathotsaveṣu ca paṇyasadharmatvāt varaṇārtham upagatāṃśca bhadradarśanān pradakṣiṇavācaśca tatsaṃbandhisaṃgatān puruṣān maṅgalaiḥ pratigṛhṇīyuḥ kanyāṃ caiṣām alaṃkṛtām anyāpadeśena darśayeyuḥ daivaṃ parīkṣaṇaṃ cāvadhiṃ sthāpayeyuḥ ā pradānaniścayāt snānādiṣu niyujyamānā varayitāraḥ sarvaṃ bhaviṣyatītyuktvā na tadaharevābhyupagaccheyuḥ deśapravṛttisātmyād vā brāhmaprājāpatyārṣadaivānām anyatamena vivāhena śāstrataḥ pariṇayet iti varaṇavidhānam bhavanti cātra ślokāḥ samasyādyāḥ sahakrīḍā vivāhāḥ saṃgatāni ca samānair eva kāryāṇi nottamair nāpi vādhamaiḥ kanyāṃ gṛhītvā varteta preṣyavad yatra nāyakaḥ taṃ vidyād uccasaṃbandhaṃ parityaktaṃ manasvibhiḥ svāmivad vicared yatra bāndhavaiḥ svaiḥ puraskṛtaḥ aślāghyo hīnasaṃbandhaḥ so 'pi sadbhir vinindyate parasparasukhāsvādā krīḍā yatra prayujyate viśeṣayantī cānyonyaṃ saṃbandhaḥ sa vidhīyate kṛtvāpi coccasaṃbandhaṃ paścājjñātiṣu saṃnamet na tv eva hīnasaṃbandhaṃ kuryāt sadbhir vininditam saṃgatayostrirātram adhaḥśayyā brahmacaryaṃ kṣāralavaṇavarjam āhārastathā saptāhaṃ satūryamaṅgalasnānaṃ prasādhanaṃ sahabhojanaṃ ca prekṣā saṃbandhināṃ ca pūjanam iti sārvavarṇikam tasminn etāṃ niśi vijane mṛdubhir upacārair upakrameta trirātram avacanaṃ hi stambham iva nāyakaṃ paśyantī kanyā nirvidyeta paribhavecca tṛtīyām iva prakṛtim iti bābhravīyāḥ upakrameta viśrambhayecca na tu brahmacaryam ativarteta iti vātsyāyanaḥ upakramamāṇaśca na prasahya kiṃcid ācaret kusumasadharmāṇo hi yoṣitaḥ sukumāropakramāḥ tāstvanadhigataviśvāsaiḥ prasabham upakramyamāṇāḥ saṃprayogadveṣiṇyo bhavanti tasmāt sāmnaivopacaret yuktyāpi tu yataḥ prasaram upalabhet tenaivānu praviśet tatpriyeṇāliṅganenācaritena nātikālatvāt pūrvakāyeṇa copakramet viṣahyatvāt dīpāloke vigāḍhayauvanāyāḥ pūrvasaṃstutāyāḥ bālāyā apūrvāyāścāndhakāre aṅgīkṛtapariṣvaṅgāyāśca vadanena tāmbūladānam tadapratipadyamānāṃ ca sāntvanair vākyaiḥ śapathaiḥ pratiyācitaiḥ pādapatanaiśca grāhayet vrīḍāyuktāpi yoṣidatyantakruddhāpi na pādapatanam ativartate iti sārvatrikam taddānaprasaṅgeṇa mṛdu viśadam akāhalam asyāścumbanam tatra siddhām ālāpayet tacchravaṇārthaṃ yat kiṃcid alpākṣarābhidheyam ajānann iva pṛcchet tatra niṣpratipattim anudvejayan sāntvanāyuktaṃ bahuśa eva pṛcchet tatra apyavadantīṃ nirbadhnīyāt sarvā eva hi kanyāḥ puruṣeṇa prayujyamānaṃ vacanaṃ viṣahante na tu laghumiśrām api vācaṃ vadanti iti ghoṭakamukhaḥ nirbadhyamānā tu śiraḥkampena prativacanāni yojayet kalahe tu na śiraḥ kampayet icchasi māṃ necchasi vā kiṃ te ahaṃ rucito na rucito veti pṛṣṭā ciraṃ sthitvā nirbadhyamānā tadānukūlyena śiraḥ kampayet prapañcyamānā tu vivadet saṃstutā cet sakhīm anukūlām ubhayato 'pi visrabdhāṃ tām antarā kṛtvā kathāṃ yojayet tasminn adhomukhī vihaset tāṃ cātivādinīm adhikṣiped vivadecca sā tu parihāsārtham idam anayoktam iti cānuktam api brūyāt tatra tām apanudya prativacanārtham abhyarthyamānā tūṣṇīm āsīta nirbadhyamānā tu nāham evaṃ bravīmītyavyaktākṣaram anavasitārthaṃ vacanaṃ brūyāt nāyakaṃ ca vihasantī kadācit kaṭākṣaiḥ prekṣeta ityālāpayojanam evaṃ jātaparicayā cānirvadantī tatsamīpe yācitaṃ tāmbūlaṃ vilepanaṃ srajaṃ nidadhyāt uttarīye vāsya nibadhnīyāt tathā yuktām ācchuritakena stanamukulayor upari spṛśet vāryamāṇaśca tvam api māṃ pariṣvajasva tato naivam ācariṣyāmīti sthityā pariṣvañjayet svaṃ ca hastam ā nābhideśāt prasārya nirvartayet krameṇa cainām utsaṅgam āropyādhikam adhikam upakramet apratipadyamānāṃ ca bhīṣayet ahaṃ khalu tava dantapadānyadhare kariṣyāmi stanapṛṣṭhe ca nakhapadam ātmanaśca svayaṃ kṛtvā tvayā kṛtam iti te sakhījanasya purataḥ kathayiṣyāmi sā tvaṃ kim atra vakṣyasīti bālavibhīṣikair bālapratyāyanaiśca śanair enāṃ pratārayet dvitīyasyāṃ tṛtīyasyāṃ ca rātrau kiṃcid adhikaṃ viśrambhitāṃ hastena yojayet sarvāṅgikaṃ cumbanam upakrameta ūrvoścopari vinyastahastaḥ saṃvāhanakriyāyāṃ siddhāyāṃ krameṇorumūlam api saṃvāhayet nivārite saṃvāhane ko doṣa ityākulayed enām tacca sthirīkuryāt tatra siddhāyā guhyadeśābhimarśanaṃ raśanāviyojanaṃ nīvīvisraṃsanaṃ vasanaparivartanam ūrumūlasaṃvāhanaṃ ca ete cāsyānyāpadeśāḥ yuktayantrāṃ rañjayet na tvakāle vratakhaṇḍanam anuśiṣyācca ātmānurāgaṃ darśayet manorathāṃśca pūrvakālikān anuvarṇayet āyatyāṃ ca tadānukūlyena pravṛttiṃ pratijānīyāt sapatnībhyaśca sādhvasam avacchindyāt kālena ca krameṇa vimuktakanyābhāvām anudvejayann upakrameta iti kanyāvisrambhaṇam bhavanti cātra ślokāḥ evaṃ cittānugo bālām upāyena prasādhayet tathāsya sānuraktā ca suvisrabdhā prajāyate nātyantam ānulomyena na cātiprātilomyataḥ siddhiṃ gacchati kanyāsu tasmān madhyena sādhayet ātmanaḥ prītijananaṃ yoṣitāṃ mānavardhanam kanyāvisrambhaṇaṃ vetti yaḥ sa tāsāṃ priyo bhavet atilajjānvitety eyaṃ yastu kanyām upekṣate so 'nabhiprāyavedīti paśuvat paribhūyate sahasā vāpyupakrāntā kanyācittam avindatā bhayaṃ vitrāsam udvegaṃ sadyo dveṣaṃ ca gacchati sā prītiyogam aprāptā tenodvegena dūṣitā puruṣadveṣiṇī vā syād vidviṣṭā vā tato 'nyagā dhanahīnastu guṇayukto 'pi madhyasthaguṇo hīnāpadeśo vā sadhano vā prātiveśyaḥ mātṛpitṛbhrātṛṣu ca paratantraḥ bālavṛttir ucitapraveśo vā kanyām alabhyatvān na varayet bālyāt prabhṛti caināṃ svayam evānurañjayet tathāyuktaśca mātulakulānuvartī dakṣiṇāpathe bāla eva mātrā ca pitrā ca viyuktaḥ paribhūtakalpo dhanotkarṣādalabhyāṃ mātuladuhitaram anyasmai vā pūrvadattāṃ sādhayet anyām api bāhyāṃ spṛhayet bālāyām evaṃ sati dharmādhigame saṃvananaṃ ślāghyam iti ghoṭakamukhaḥ tayā saha puṣpāvacayaṃ grathanaṃ gṛhakaṃ duhitṛkākrīḍāyojanaṃ bhaktapānakaraṇam iti kurvīta paricayasya vayasaścānurūpyāt ākarṣakrīḍā paṭṭikākrīḍā muṣṭidyūtakṣullakādidyūtāni madhyamāṅguligrahaṇaṃ ṣaṭpāṣāṇakādīni ca deśyāni tatsātmyāt tadāptadāsaceṭikābhis tayā ca sahānukrīḍeta kṣveḍitakāni sunimīlitakām ārabdhikāṃ lavaṇavīthikām anilatāḍitakāṃ godhūmapuñjikām aṅgulitāḍitakāṃ sakhībhir anyāni ca deśyāni yāṃ ca viśvāsyām asyāṃ manyeta tayā saha nirantarāṃ prītiṃ kuryāt paricayāṃśca budhyeta dhātreyikāṃ cāsyāḥ priyahitābhyām adhikam upagṛhṇīyāt sā hi prīyamāṇā viditākārāpy apratyādiśantī taṃ tāṃ ca yojayituṃ śaknuyāt anabhihitāpi pratyācāryakam aviditākārāpi hi guṇān evānurāgāt prakāśayet yathā prayojyānurajyeta yatra yatra ca kautukaṃ prayojyāyāstad anu praviśya sādhayet krīḍanakadravyāṇi yānyapūrvāṇi yānyanyāsāṃ viralaśo vidyeraṃstānyasyā ayatnena sampādayet tatra kandukam anekabhakticitram alpakālāntaritam anyad anyacca saṃdarśayet tathā sūtradārugavalagajadantamayīr duhitṛkā madhūcchiṣṭapiṣṭamṛṇmayīśca bhaktapākārtham asyā mahānasikasya ca darśanam kāṣṭhamedhrakayośca saṃyuktayośca strīpuṃsayor ajaiḍakānāṃ devakulagṛhakānāṃ mṛdvidalakāṣṭhavinirmitānāṃ śukaparabhṛtamadanasārikālāvakakukkuṭatittiripañjarakāṇāṃ ca vicitrākṛtisaṃyuktānāṃ jalabhājanānāṃ ca yantrikāṇāṃ vīṇikānāṃ paṭolikānām alaktakamanaḥśilāharitālahiṅgulakaśyāmavarṇakādīnāṃ tathā candanakuṅkumayoḥ pūgaphalānāṃ pattrāṇāṃ kālayuktānāṃ ca śaktiviṣaye pracchannaṃ dānaṃ prakāśadravyāṇāṃ ca prakāśam yathā ca sarvābhiprāyasaṃvardhakam enaṃ manyeta tathā prayatitavyam vīkṣaṇe ca pracchannam arthayet tathā kathāyojanam pracchannadānasya tu kāraṇam ātmano gurujanād bhayaṃ khyāpayet deyasya cānyena spṛhaṇīyatvam iti vardhamānānurāgaṃ cākhyānake manaḥ kurvatīm anvarthābhiḥ kathābhiścittahāriṇībhiśca rañjayet vismayeṣu prasahyamānām indrajālaiḥ prayogair vismāpayet kalāsu kautukinīṃ tatkauśalena gītapriyāṃ śrutiharair gītaiḥ āśvayujyām aṣṭamīcandrake kaumudyām utsaveṣu yātrāyāṃ grahaṇe gṛhācāre vā vicitrair āpīḍaiḥ karṇapattrabhaṅgaiḥ sikthakapradhānair vastrāṅgulīyakabhūṣaṇadānaiśca no ced doṣakarāṇi manyeta anyapuruṣaviśeṣābhijñatayā dhātreyikāsyāḥ puruṣapravṛttau cātuḥṣaṣṭikān yogān grāhayet tadgrahaṇopadeśena ca prayojyāyāṃ ratikauśalam ātmanaḥ prakāśayet udāraveṣaśca svayam anupahatadarśanaḥ syāt bhāvaṃ ca kurvatīm iṅgitākāraiḥ sūcayet yuvatayo hi saṃsṛṣṭam abhīkṣṇadarśanaṃ ca puruṣaṃ prathamaṃ kāmayante kāmayamānā api tu nābhiyuñjata iti prāyovādaḥ iti bālāyām upakramāḥ tān iṅgitākārān vakṣyāmaḥ saṃmukhaṃ taṃ tu na vīkṣate vīkṣitā vrīḍāṃ darśayati rucyam ātmano 'ṅgam apadeśena prakāśayati pramattaṃ pracchannaṃ nāyakam atikrāntaṃ ca vīkṣate pṛṣṭā ca kiṃcit sasmitam avyaktākṣaram anavasitārthaṃ ca mandaṃ mandam adhomukhī kathayati tatsamīpe ciraṃ sthānam abhinandati dūre sthitā paśyatu mām iti manyamānā parijanaṃ savadanavikāram ābhāṣate taṃ deśaṃ na muñcati yat kiṃcid dṛṣṭvā vihasitaṃ karoti tatra kathām avasthānārtham anubadhnāti bālasyāṅkagatasyāliṅganaṃ cumbanaṃ ca karoti paricārikāyāstilakaṃ ca racayati parijanānavaṣṭabhya tāstāśca līlā darśayati tanmitreṣu viśvasiti vacanaṃ caiṣāṃ bahu manyate karoti ca tatparicārakaiḥ saha prītiṃ saṃkathāṃ dyūtam iti ca karoti svakarmasu ca prabhaviṣṇur ivaitān niyuṅkte teṣu ca nāyakasaṃkathām anyasya kathayatsvavahitā tāṃ śṛṇoti dhātreyikayā coditā nāyakasyodavasitaṃ praviśati tām antarā kṛtvā tena saha dyūtaṃ krīḍām ālāpaṃ cāyojayitum icchati analaṃkṛtā darśanapathaṃ pariharati karṇapattram aṅgulīyakaṃ srajaṃ vā tena yācitā sadhīram eva gātrād avatārya sakhyā haste dadāti tena ca dattaṃ nityaṃ dhārayati anyavarasaṃkathāsu viṣaṇṇā bhavati tatpakṣakaiśca saha na saṃsṛjyata iti bhavataścātra ślokau dṛṣṭvaitān bhāvasaṃyuktān ākārān iṅgitāni ca kanyāyāḥ saṃprayogārthaṃ tāṃstān yogān vicintayet bālakrīḍanakair bālā kalābhir yauvane sthitā vatsalā cāpi saṃgrāhyā viśvāsyajanasaṃgrahāt darśiteṅgitākārāṃ kanyām upāyato 'bhiyuñjīta dyūte krīḍanakeṣu ca vivadamānaḥ sākāram asyāḥ pāṇim avalambeta yathoktaṃ ca spṛṣṭakādikam āliṅganavidhiṃ vidadhyāt patracchedyakriyāyāṃ ca svābhiprāyāsūcakaṃ mithunam asyā darśayet evam anyadviralaśo darśayet jalakrīḍāyāṃ taddūrato 'psu nimagnaḥ samīpam asyā gatvā spṛṣṭvā caināṃ tatraivonmajjet navapatrikādiṣu ca saviśeṣabhāvanivedanam ātmaduḥkhasyānirvedena kathanam svapnasya ca bhāvayuktasyānyāpadeśena prekṣaṇake svajanasamāje vā samīpopaveśanam tatrānyāpadiṣṭaṃ sparśanam apāśrayārthaṃ ca caraṇena caraṇasya pīḍanam tataḥ śanakair ekaikām aṅgulim abhispṛśet pādāṅguṣṭhena ca nakhāgrāṇi ghaṭṭayet tatra siddhaḥ padāt padam adhikam ākāṅkṣet kṣāntyarthaṃ ca tad evābhyaset pādaśauce pādāṅgulisaṃdaṃśena tadaṅgulipīḍanam dravyasya samarpaṇe pratigrahe vā tadgato vikāraḥ ācamanānte codakenāsekaḥ vijane tamasi ca dvandvam āsīnaḥ kṣāntiṃ kurvīta samānadeśaśayyāyāṃ ca tatra yathārtham anudvejayato bhāvanivedanam vivikte ca kiṃcid asti kathayitavyam ityuktvā nirvacanaṃ bhāvaṃ ca tatropalakṣayet yathā pāradārike vakṣyāmaḥ viditabhāvastu vyādhim apadiśyaināṃ vārtāgrahaṇārthaṃ svam udavasitam ānayet āgatāyāśca śiraḥpīḍane niyogaḥ pāṇim avalambya cāsyāḥ sākāraṃ nayanayor lalāṭe ca nidadhyāt auṣadhāpadeśārthaṃ cāsyāḥ karma vinirdiśet idaṃ tvayā kartavyam na hyetad ṛte kanyayā anyena kāryam iti gacchantīṃ punar āgamanānubandham enāṃ visṛjet asya ca yogasya trirātraṃ trisaṃdhyaṃ ca prayuktiḥ abhīkṣṇadarśanārtham āgatāyāśca goṣṭhīṃ vardhayet anyābhir api saha viśvāsanārtham adhikam adhikaṃ cābhiyuñjīta na tu vācā nirvadet dūragatabhāvo 'pi hi kanyāsu na nirvedena sidhyatīti ghoṭakamukhaḥ yadā tu bahusiddhāṃ manyeta tadaivopakramet pradoṣe niśi tamasi ca yoṣito mandasādhvasāḥ suratavyavasāyinyo rāgavatyaśca bhavanti na ca puruṣaṃ pratyācakṣate tasmāt tatkālaṃ prayojayitavyā iti prāyovādaḥ ekapuruṣābhiyogānāṃ tvasaṃbhave gṛhītārthayā dhātreyikayā sakhyā vā tasyām antarbhūtayā tam artham anirvadantyā sahainām aṅkam ānāyayet tato yathoktam abhiyuñjīta svāṃ vā paricārikām ādāv eva sakhītvenāsyāḥ praṇidadhyāt yajñe vivāhe yātrāyām utsave vyasane prekṣaṇakavyāpṛte jane tatra tatra ca dṛṣṭeṅgitākārāṃ parīkṣitabhāvām ekākinīm upakrameta na hi dṛṣṭabhāvā yoṣito deśe kāle ca prayujyamānā vyāvartanta iti vātsyāyanaḥ ityekapuruṣābhiyogāḥ mandāpadeśā guṇavatyapi kanyā dhanahīnā kulīnāpi samānair ayācyāmānā mātāpitṛviyuktā vā jñātikulavartinī vā prāptayauvanā pāṇigrahaṇaṃ svayam abhīpseta sā tu guṇavantaṃ śaktaṃ sudarśanaṃ bālaprītyābhiyojayet yaṃ vā manyeta mātāpitror asamīkṣayā svayam apyayam indriyadaurbalyān mayi pravartiṣyata iti priyahitopacārair śirasaḥ pīḍane caucityadarśanam prayojyasya sātmyayuktāḥ kathāyogāḥ bālāyām upakrameṣu yathoktam ācaret na caivāntarāpi puruṣaṃ svayam abhiyuñjīta svayam abhiyoginī hi yuvatiḥ saubhāgyaṃ jahātītyācāryāḥ tatprayuktānāṃ tvabhiyogānām ānulomyena grahaṇam pariṣvaktā ca na vikṛtiṃ bhajet ślakṣṇam ākāram ajānatīva pratigṛhṇīyāt vadanagrahaṇe balāt kāraḥ ratibhāvanām abhyarthyamānāyāḥ kṛcchrād guhyasaṃsparśanam abhyarthitāpi nātivivṛtā svayaṃ syāt anyatrāniścayakālāt yadā tu manyetānurakto mayi na vyāvartiṣyata iti tadaivainam abhiyuñjānaṃ bālabhāvamokṣāya tvarayet vimuktakanyābhāvā ca viśvāsyeṣu prakāśayet iti prayojyasyopāvartanam kanyābhiyujyamānā tu yaṃ manyetāśrayaṃ sukham anukūlaṃ ca vaśyaṃ ca tasya kuryāt parigraham anapekṣya guṇān yatra rūpamaucityam eva ca kurvīta dhanalobhena patiṃ sāpatnakeṣvapi tatra yuktaguṇaṃ vaśyaṃ śaktaṃ balavadarthinam upāyair abhiyuñjānaṃ kanyā na pratilobhayet varaṃ vaśyo daridro 'pi nirguṇo 'pyātmadhāraṇaḥ guṇair yukto 'pi na tv evaṃ bahusādhāraṇaḥ patiḥ prāyeṇa dhanināṃ dārā bahavo niravagrahāḥ bāhye satyupabhoge api nirvisrambhā bahiḥsukhāḥ nīco yastvabhiyuñjīta puruṣaḥ palito 'pi vā videśagatiśīlaśca na sa saṃyogam arhati yadṛcchayābhiyukto yo dambhadyūtādhiko 'pi vā sapatnīkaśca sāpatyo na sa saṃyogam arhati guṇasāmye abhiyoktṝṇām eko varayitā varaḥ tatrābhiyoktari śraiṣṭhyam anurāgātmako hi saḥ prācuryeṇa kanyāyā viviktadarśanasyālābhe dhātreyikāṃ priyahitābhyām upagṛhyopasarpet sā cainām aviditā nāma nāyakasya bhūtvā tadguṇair anurañjayet tasyāśca rucyān nāyakaguṇān bhūyiṣṭham upavarṇayet anyeṣāṃ varapitṝṇāṃ doṣān abhiprāyaviruddhān pratipādayet mātāpitrośca guṇān abhijñatāṃ lubdhatāṃ ca capalatāṃ ca bāndhavānām yāścānyā api samānajātīyāḥ kanyāḥ śakuntalādyāḥ svabuddhyā bhartāraṃ prāpya samprayuktā modante sma tāścāsyā nidarśayet mahākuleṣu sāpatnakair bādhyamānā vidviṣṭā duḥkhitāḥ parityaktāśca dṛśyante āyatiṃ cāsya varṇayet sukham anupahatam ekacāritāyāṃ nāyikānurāgaṃ ca varṇayet samanorathāyāś cāsyā apāyaṃ sādhvasaṃ vrīḍāṃ ca hetubhir avacchindyāt dūtīkalpaṃ ca sakalam ācaret tvām ajānatīm iva nāyako balād grahīṣyatīti tathā suparigṛhītaṃ syād iti yojayet pratipannām abhipretāvakāśavartinīṃ nāyakaḥ śrotriyāgārād agnim ānāyya kuśān āstīrya yathāsmṛti hutvā ca triḥ parikramet tato mātari pitari ca prakāśayet agnisākṣikā hi vivāhā na nivartanta ityācāryasamayaḥ dūṣayitvā caināṃ śanaiḥ svajane prakāśayet tadbāndhavāśca yathā kulasyādhaṃ pariharanto daṇḍabhayācca tasmā evaināṃ dadyustathā yojayet anantaraṃ ca prītyupagraheṇa rāgeṇa tadbāndhavān prīṇayed iti gāndharveṇa vivāhena vā ceṣṭeta apratipadyamānāyām antaścāriṇīm anyāṃ kulapramadāṃ pūrvasaṃsṛṣṭāṃ prīyamāṇāṃ copagṛhya tayā saha viṣahyam avakāśam enām anyakāryāpadeśenānāyayet tataḥ śrotriyāgārād agnim iti samānaṃ pūrveṇa āsanne ca vivāhe mātaram asyāstad abhimatadoṣair anuśayaṃ grāhayet tatastadanumatena prātiveśyābhavane niśi nāyakam ānāyya śrotriyāgārād agnim iti samānaṃ pūrveṇa bhrātaram asyā vā samānavayasaṃ veśyāsu parastrīṣu vā prasaktam asukareṇa sāhāyadānena priyopagrahaiśca sudīrghakālam anurañjayet ante ca svābhiprāyaṃ grāhayet prāyeṇa hi yuvānaḥ samānaśīlavyasanavayasāṃ vayasyānām arthe jīvitam api tyajanti tatastenaivānyakāryāt tām ānāyayet viṣahyaṃ sāvakāśam iti samānaṃ pūrveṇa aṣṭamīcandrikādiṣu ca dhātreyikā madanīyam enāṃ pāyayitvā kiṃcid ātmanaḥ kāryam uddiśya nāyakasya viṣahyaṃ deśam ānayet tatraināṃ madāt saṃjñām apratipadyamānāṃ dūṣayitveti samānaṃ pūrveṇa suptāṃ caikacāriṇīṃ dhātreyikāṃ vārayitvā saṃjñām apratipadyamānāṃ dūṣayitveti samānaṃ pūrveṇa grāmāntaram udyānaṃ vā gacchantīṃ viditvā susaṃbhṛtasahāyo nāyakastadā rakṣiṇo vitrāsya hatvā vā kanyām apaharet iti vivāhayogāḥ pūrvaḥ pūrvaḥ pradhānaṃ syād vivāho dharmataḥ sthiteḥ pūrvābhāve tataḥ kāryo yo ya uttara uttaraḥ vyūḍhānāṃ hi vivāhānām anurāgaḥ phalaṃ yataḥ madhyamo 'pi hi sadyogo gāndharvastena pūjitaḥ sukhatvād abahukleśād api cāvaraṇād iha anurāgātmakatvācca gāndharvaḥ pravaro mataḥ bhāryā ekacāriṇī gūḍha viśrambhā deva vat patim ānukūlyena varteta tad matena kuṭumba cintām ātmani saṃniveśayet veśma ca śuci susaṃmṛṣṭasthānaṃ viracitavividhakusumaṃ ślakṣṇabhūmitalaṃ hṛdyadarśanaṃ triṣavaṇācaritabalikarma pūjitadevāyatanaṃ kuryāt na hyato 'nyad gṛhasthānāṃ cittagrāhakam astīti gonardīyaḥ guruṣu bhṛtyavargeṣu nāyakabhaginīṣu tatpatiṣu ca yathārhaṃ pratipattiḥ paripūteṣu ca haritaśākavaprān ikṣustambāñ jīrakasarṣapājamodaśatapuṣpātamālagulmāṃśca kārayet kubjakāmalakamallikājātīkuraṇṭakanavamālikātagaranandyāvartajapāgulmān anyāṃśca bahupuṣpān bālakośīrakapātālikāṃśca vṛkṣavāṭikāyāṃ ca sthaṇḍilāni manojñāni kārayet madhye kūpam vāpīm dīrghikām _ khānayet bhikṣukī śramaṇā kṣapaṇā kulaṭā kuhakā īkṣaṇika mūlakārikābhiḥ na saṃsṛjyeta bhojane ca rucitam idam asmai dveṣyam idaṃ pathyam idam apathyam idam iti ca vindyāt svaraṃ bahir upaśrutya bhavanam āgacchataḥ kiṃ kṛtyam iti bruvatī sajjā bhavanamadhye tiṣṭhet paricārikām apanudya svayaṃ pādau prakṣālayet nāyakasya ca na vimuktabhūṣaṇaṃ vijane saṃdarśane tiṣṭhet ativyayam asadvyayaṃ vā kurvāṇaṃ rahasi bodhayet āvāhe vivāhe yajñe gamanaṃ sakhībhiḥ saha goṣṭhīṃ devatābhigamanam ityanujñātā kuryāt sarvakrīḍāsu ca tadānulomyena pravṛttiḥ paścāt saṃveśanaṃ pūrvam utthānam anavabodhanaṃ ca suptasya mahānasaṃ ca suguptaṃ syād darśanīyaṃ ca nāyakāpacāreṣu kiṃcit kaluṣitā nātyarthaṃ nirvadet sādhikṣepavacanaṃ tv enaṃ mitrajanamadhyastham ekākinaṃ vāpyupālabheta na ca mūlakārikā syāt na hyato 'nyad apratyayakāraṇam astīti gonardīyaḥ durvyāhṛtaṃ durnirīkṣitam anyato mantraṇaṃ dvāradeśāvasthānaṃ nirīkṣaṇaṃ vā niṣkuṭeṣu mantraṇaṃ vivikteṣu ciram avasthānam iti varjayet svedadantapaṅkadurgandhāṃśca budhyeteti virāgakāraṇam bahubhūṣaṇaṃ vividhakusumānulepanaṃ vividhāṅgarāgasamujjvalaṃ vāsa ityābhigāmiko veṣaḥ pratanuślakṣṇālpadukūlatā parimitam ābharaṇaṃ sugandhitā nātyulbaṇam anulepanam tathā śuklānyanyāni puṣpāṇīti vaihāriko veṣaḥ nāyakasya vratam upavāsaṃ ca svayam api karaṇenānuvarteta vāritāyāṃ ca nāham atra nirbandhanīyeti tadvacaso nivartanam mṛdvidalakāṣṭhacarmalohabhāṇḍānāṃ ca kāle samarghagrahaṇam tathā lavaṇasnehayośca gandhadravyakaṭukabhāṇḍauṣadhānāṃ ca durlabhānāṃ bhavaneṣu pracchannaṃ nidhānam mūlakālukapālaṅkīdamanakāmrātakairvārukatrapusavārtākakūṣmāṇḍālābusūraṇaśukanāsāsvayaṃguptātilaparṇikāgnimanthalaśunapalāṇḍuprabhṛtīnāṃ sarvauṣadhīnāṃ ca bījagrahaṇaṃ kāle vāpaśca svasya ca sārasya parebhyo nākhyānaṃ bhartṛmantritasya ca samānāśca striyaḥ kauśalenojjvalatayā pākena mānena tathopacārair atiśayīta sāṃvatsarikamāyaṃ saṃkhyāya tadanurūpaṃ vyayaṃ kuryāt bhojanāvaśiṣṭād gorasād ghṛtakaraṇam tathā tailaguḍayoḥ karpāsasya ca sūtrakartanam sūtrasya vānam śikyarajjupāśavalkalasaṃgrahaṇam kuṭṭanakaṇḍanāvekṣaṇam ācāmamaṇḍatuṣakaṇakuṭyaṅgārāṇām upayojanam bhṛtyavetanabharaṇajñānam kṛṣipaśupālanacintāvāhanavidhānayogāḥ meṣakukkuṭalāvakaśukaśārikāparabhṛtamayūravānaramṛgāṇām avekṣaṇam daivasikāyavyayapiṇḍīkaraṇam iti ca vidyāt tajjaghanyānāṃ ca jīrṇavāsasāṃ saṃcayastair vividharāgaiḥ śuddhair vā kṛtakarmaṇāṃ paricārakāṇām anugraho mānārtheṣu ca dānam anyatra vopayogaḥ surākumbhīnām āsavakumbhīnāṃ ca sthāpanaṃ tadupayogaḥ krayavikrayāv āyavyayāvekṣaṇam nāyakamitrāṇāṃ ca sraganulepanatāmbūladānaiḥ pūjanaṃ nyāyataḥ śvaśrūśvaśuraparicaryā tatpāratantryam anuttaravāditā parimitāpracaṇḍālāpakaraṇam anuccair hāsaḥ bhogeṣv anutsekaḥ parijane dākṣiṇyam nāyakasyānivedya na kasmaicid dānam svakarmasu bhṛtyajananiyamanam utsaveṣu cāsya pūjanam ityekacāriṇīvṛttam pravāse maṅgalamātrābharaṇā devatopavāsaparā vārtāyāṃ sthitā gṛhān avekṣeta śayyā ca gurujanamūle tadabhimatā kāryaniṣpattiḥ nāyakābhimatānāṃ cārthānām arjane pratisaṃskāre ca yatnaḥ nityanaimittikeṣu karmasūcito vyayaḥ tadārabdhānāṃ ca karmaṇāṃ samāpane matiḥ jñātikulasyānabhigamanam anyatra vyasanotsavābhyām tatrāpi nāyakaparijanādhiṣṭhitāyā nātikālam avasthānam aparivartitapravāsaveṣatā ca gurujanānujñātānāṃ karaṇam upavāsānām paricārakaiḥ śucibhir ājñādhiṣṭhitair anumatena krayavikrayakarmaṇā sārasyāpūraṇaṃ tanūkaraṇaṃ ca śaktyā vyayānām āgate ca prakṛtisthāyā eva prathamato darśanaṃ daivatapūjanam upahārāṇāṃ cāharaṇam iti pravāsacaryā sadvṛttam anuvarteta nāyakasya hitaiṣiṇī kulayoṣā punarbhūr vā veśyā vāpyekacāriṇī dharmam arthaṃ tathā kāmaṃ labhante sthānam eva ca niḥsapatnaṃ ca bhartāraṃ nāryaḥ sadvṛttam āśritāḥ jāḍyadauḥśīlyadaurbhāgyebhyaḥ prajānutpatter ābhīkṣṇyena dārikotpatter nāyakacāpalād vā sapatnyadhivedanam tadādita eva bhaktiśīlavaidagdhyakhyāpanena parijihīrṣet prajānutpattau ca svayam eva sāpatnake codayet adhividyamānā ca yāvacchaktiyogād ātmano 'dhikatvena sthitiṃ kārayet āgatāṃ caināṃ bhaginīvad īkṣeta nāyakaviditaṃ ca prādoṣikaṃ vidhim atīva yatnād asyāḥ kārayet saubhāgyajaṃ vaikṛtam utsekaṃ vāsyā nādriyeta bhartari pramādyantīm upekṣeta yatra manyetārtham iyaṃ svayam api pratipatsyata iti tatrainām ādarata evānuśiṣyāt nāyakasaṃśrave ca rahasi viśeṣān adhikān darśayet tadapatyeṣvaviśeṣaḥ parijanavarge adhikānukampā mitravarge prītiḥ ātmajñātiṣu nātyādaraḥ tajjñātiṣu cātisaṃbhramaḥ bahvībhis tvadhivinnā avyavahitayā saṃsṛjyeta yāṃ tu nāyako 'dhikāṃ cikīrṣet tāṃ bhūtapūrvasubhagayā protsāhya kalahayet tataścānukampeta tābhir ekatvenādhikāṃ cikīrṣitāṃ svayam avivadamānā durjanīkuryāt nāyakena tu kalahitām enāṃ pakṣapātāvalambanopabṛṃhitām āśvāsayet kalahaṃ ca vardhayet mandaṃ vā kalaham upalabhya svayam eva saṃdhukṣayet yadi nāyako 'syām adyāpi sānunaya iti manyeta tadā svayam eva saṃdhau prayateteti jyeṣṭhāvṛttam kaniṣṭhā tu mātṛvat sapatnīṃ paśyet jñātidāyam api tasyā aviditaṃ nopayuñjīta ātmavṛttān tāṃstadadhiṣṭhitān kuryāt anujñātā patim adhiśayīta na vā tasyā vacanam anyasyāḥ kathayet tadapatyāni svebhyo 'dhikāni paśyet rahasi patim adhikam upacaret ātmanaśca sapatnīvikārajaṃ duḥkhaṃ nācakṣīta patyuśca saviśeṣakaṃ gūḍhaṃ mānaṃ lipset anena khalu pathyadānena jīvāmīti brūyāt tat tu ślāghayā rāgeṇa vā bahir nācakṣīta bhinnarahasyā hi bhartur avajñāṃ labhate jyeṣṭhābhayācca nigūḍhasaṃmānārthinī syād iti gonardīyaḥ durbhagām anapatyāṃ ca jyeṣṭhām anukampeta nāyakena cānukampayet prasahya tv enām ekacāriṇīvṛttam anutiṣṭhed iti kaniṣṭhāvṛttam vidhavā tvindriyadaurbalyād āturā bhoginaṃ guṇasampannaṃ ca yā punar vindet sā punarbhūḥ yatastu svecchayā punar api niṣkramaṇaṃ nirguṇo 'yam iti tadā anyaṃ kāṅkṣed iti bābhravīyāḥ saukhyārthinī sā kilānyaṃ punar vindeta guṇeṣu sopabhogeṣu sukhasākalyaṃ tasmāt tato viśeṣa iti gonardīyaḥ ātmanaścittānukūlyād iti vātsyāyanaḥ sā bāndhavair nāyakād āpānakodyānaśraddhādānamitrapūjanādi vyayasahiṣṇu karma lipseta ātmanaḥ sāreṇa vālaṃkāraṃ tadīyam ātmīyaṃ vā bibhṛyāt prītidāyeṣv aniyamaḥ svecchayā ca gṛhān nirgacchantī prītidāyād anyan nāyakadattaṃ jīyeta niṣkāsyamānā tu na kiṃcid dadyāt sā prabhaviṣṇur iva tasya bhavanam āpnuyāt kulajāsu tu prītyā varteta dākṣiṇyena parijane sarvatra saparihāsā mitreṣu pratipattiḥ kalāsu kauśalam adhikasya ca jñānam kalahasthāneṣu ca nāyakaṃ svayam upālabheta rahasi ca kalayā catuḥṣaṣṭyānuvarteta sapatnīnāṃ ca svayam upakuryāt tāsām apatyeṣvābharaṇadānam teṣu svāmivad upacāraḥ maṇḍanakāni veṣān ādareṇa kurvīta parijane mitravarge cādhikaṃ viśrāṇanam samājāpānakodyānayātrāvihāraśīlatā ceti punarbhūvṛttam durbhagā tu sāpatnakapīḍitā yā tāsām adhikam iva patyāvupacaret tām āśrayet prakāśyāni ca kalāvijñānāni darśayet daurbhāgyād rahasyānām abhāvaḥ nāyakāpatyānāṃ dhātreyikāni kuryāt tanmitrāṇi copagṛhya tair bhaktim ātmanaḥ prakāśayet dharmakṛtyeṣu ca puraścāriṇī syād vratopavāsayośca parijane dākṣiṇyam na cādhikam ātmānaṃ paśyet śayane tatsātmyenātmano 'nurāgapratyānayanam na copālabheta vāmatāṃ ca na darśayet yayā ca kalahitaḥ syāt kāmaṃ tām āvartayet yāṃ ca pracchannāṃ kāmayet tām anena saha saṃgamayed gopayecca yathā ca pativratātvam aśāṭhyaṃ nāyako manyeta tathā pratividadhyād iti durbhagāvṛttam antaḥpurāṇāṃ ca vṛttam eteṣv eva prakaraṇeṣu lakṣayet mālyānulepanavāsāṃsi cāsāṃ kañcukīyā mahattarikā vā rājño nivedayeyur devībhiḥ prahitam iti tadādāya rājā nirmālyam āsāṃ pratiprābhṛtakaṃ dadyāt alaṃkṛtaśca svalaṃkṛtāni cāparāhṇe sarvāṇyantaḥpurāṇyaikadhyena paśyet tāsāṃ yathākālaṃ yathārhaṃ ca sthānamānānuvṛttiḥ saparihāsāśca kathāḥ kuryāt tadanantaraṃ punarbhuvastathaiva paśyet tato veśyā ābhyantarikā nāṭakīyāśca tāsāṃ yathoktakakṣāṇi sthānāni vāsakapālyastu yasyā vāsako yasyāścātīto yasyāśca ṛtustatparicārikānugatā divā śayyotthitasya rājñastābhyāṃ prahitam aṅgulīyakāṅkam anulepanam ṛtuṃ vāsakaṃ ca nivedayeyuḥ tatra rājā yad gṛhṇīyāt tasyā vāsakam ājñāpayet utsaveṣu ca sarvāsām anurūpeṇa pūjāpānakaṃ ca saṃgītadarśaneṣu ca antaḥpuracāriṇīnāṃ bahir aniṣkramo bāhyānāṃ cāpraveśaḥ anyatra viditaśaucābhyaḥ aparikliṣṭaśca karmayoga ityāntaḥpurikam bhavanti cātra ślokāḥ puruṣastu bahūn dārān samāhṛtya samo bhavet na cāvajñāṃ cared āsu vyalīkān na saheta ca ekasyāṃ yā ratikrīḍā vaikṛtaṃ vā śarīrajam visrambhād vāpyupālambhastam anyāsu na kīrtayet na dadyāt prasaraṃ strīṇāṃ sapatnyāḥ kāraṇe kvacit tathopālabhamānāṃ ca doṣaistām eva yojayet anyāṃ rahasi visrambhair anyāṃ pratyakṣapūjanaiḥ bahumānaistathā cānyām ityevaṃ rañjayet striyaḥ udyānagamanair bhogair dānaistajjñātipūjanaiḥ rahasyaiḥ prītiyogaiścetyekaikām anurañjayet yuvatiśca jitakrodhā yathāśāstrapravartinī karoti vaśyaṃ bhartāraṃ sapatnīścādhitiṣṭhati strīpuruṣaśīlavasthāpanaṃ vyāvartanakāraṇāṇi strīṣu siddhāḥ puruṣā ayatnasādhyā yoṣitaḥ vyākhyātakāraṇāḥ paraparigrahopagamāḥ teṣu sādhyatvam anatyayaṃ gamyatvam āyatiṃ vṛttiṃ cādita eva parīkṣeta yadā tu sthānāt sthānāntaraṃ kāmaṃ pratipadyamānaṃ paśyet tadātmaśarīropaghātatrāṇārthaṃ paraparigrahān abhyupagacchet daśa tu kāmasya sthānāni cakṣuḥprītir manaḥsaṅgaḥ saṃkalpotpattir nidrācchedastanutā viṣayebhyo vyāvṛttir lajjāpraṇāśa unmādo mūrchā maraṇam iti teṣāṃ liṅgāni tatrākṛtito lakṣaṇataśca yuvatyāḥ śīlaṃ satyaṃ śaucaṃ sādhyatāṃ caṇḍavegatāṃ ca lakṣayed ityācāryāḥ vyabhicārād ākṛtilakṣaṇayogānām iṅgitākārābhyām eva pravṛttir boddhavyā yoṣita iti vātsyāyanaḥ yaṃ kaṃcid ujjvalaṃ puruṣaṃ dṛṣṭvā strī kāmayate tathā puruṣo 'pi yoṣitam apekṣayā tu na pravartata iti goṇikāputraḥ tatra striyaṃ prati viśeṣaḥ na strī dharmam adharmaṃ cāpekṣate kāmayata eva kāryāpekṣayā tu nābhiyuṅkte svabhāvācca puruṣeṇābhiyujyamānā cikīrṣantyapi vyāvartate punaḥ punar abhiyuktā sidhyati puruṣastu dharmasthitim āryasamayaṃ cāpekṣya kāmayamāno 'pi vyāvartate tathābuddhiścābhiyujyamāno 'pi na sidhyati niṣkāraṇam abhiyuṅkte abhiyujyāpi punar nābhiyuṅkte siddhāyāṃ ca mādhyasthyaṃ gacchati sulabhām avamanyate durlabhām ākāṅkṣata iti prāyovādaḥ tatra vyāvartanakāraṇāni patyāvanurāgaḥ apatyāpekṣā atikrāntavayastvam duḥkhābhibhavaḥ virahan upalambhaḥ avajñayopamantrayata iti krodhaḥ apratarkya iti saṃkalpavarjanam gamiṣyatītyanāyatir anyatra prasaktamatir iti ca asaṃvṛtākāra ityudvegaḥ mitreṣu nisṛṣṭabhāva iti teṣvapekṣā śuṣkābhiyogītyāśaṅkā tejasvīti sādhvasam caṇḍavegaḥ samaratho veti bhayaṃ mṛgyāḥ nāgarakaḥ kalāsu vicakṣaṇa iti vrīḍā sakhitvenopacarita iti ca adeśakālajña ityasūyā paribhavasthānam ity abahumānaḥ ākārito 'pi nāvabudhyata ityavajñā śaśo mandavega iti ca hastinyāḥ matto 'sya mā bhūd aniṣṭam ityanukampā ātmani doṣadarśanān nirvedaḥ viditā satī svajanabahiṣkṛtā bhaviṣyāmīti bhayam palita ityanādaraḥ patyā prayuktaḥ parīkṣata iti vimarśaḥ dharmāpekṣā ceti teṣu yadātmani lakṣayet tadādita eva paricchindyāt āryatvayuktāni rāgavardhanāt aśaktijānyupāyapradarśanāt bahumānakṛtānyatiparicayāt paribhavakṛtānyatiśauṇḍīryād vaicakṣaṇyācca tatparibhavajāni praṇatyā bhayayuktānyāśvāsanād iti puruṣāstvamī prāyeṇa siddhāḥ kāmasūtrajñaḥ kathākhyānakuśalo bālyāt prabhṛti saṃsṛṣṭaḥ pravṛddhayauvanaḥ krīḍanakarmādināgataviśvāsaḥ preṣaṇasya kartocitasaṃbhāṣaṇaḥ priyasya kartānyasya bhūtapūrvo dūto marmajña uttamayā prārthitaḥ sakhyā pracchannaṃ saṃsṛṣṭaḥ subhagābhikhyātaḥ saha saṃvṛddhaḥ prātiveśyaḥ kāmaśīlastathābhūtaś ca paricāriko dhātreyikāparigraho navavarakaḥ prekṣodyānatyāgaśīlo vṛṣa iti siddhapratāpaḥ sāhasikaḥ śūro vidyārūpaguṇopabhogaiḥ patyur atiśayitā mahārhaveṣopacāraśceti yathātmanaḥ siddhatāṃ paśyed evaṃ yoṣito 'pi ayatnasādhyā yoṣitastv imāḥ abhiyogamātrasādhyāḥ dvāradeśāvasthāyinī prāsādād rājamārgāvalokinī taruṇaprātiveśyagṛhe goṣṭhīyojinī satataprekṣiṇī prekṣitā pārśvavilokinī niṣkāraṇaṃ sapatnyādhivinnā bhartṛdveṣiṇī vidviṣṭā ca parihārahīnā nirapatyā jñātikulanityā vipannāpatyā goṣṭhīyojinī prītiyojinī kuśīlavabhāryā mṛtapatikā bālā daridrā bahūpabhogā jyeṣṭhabhāryā bahudevarakā bahumāninī nyūnabhartṛkā kauśalābhimāninī bhartur maurkhyeṇodvignā aviśeṣatayā lobhena kanyākāle yatnena varitā kathaṃcid alabdhābhiyuktā ca sā tadānīṃ samānabuddhiśīlamedhāpratipattisātmyā prakṛtyā pakṣapātinī anaparādhe vimānitā tulyarūpābhiścādhaḥ kṛtā proṣitapatiketi īrṣyālupūticokṣaklībadīrghasūtrakāpuruṣakubjavāmanavirūpamaṇikāragrāmyadurgandhirogivṛddhabhāryāśceti ślokāvatra bhavataḥ icchā svabhāvato jātā kriyayā paribṛṃhitā buddhyā saṃśodhitodvegā sthirā syād anapāyinī siddhatām ātmano jñātvā liṅgānyunnīya yoṣitām vyāvṛttikāraṇocchedī naro yoṣitsu sidhyati yathā kanyā svayam abhiyogasādhyā na tathā dūtyā parastriyastu sūkṣmabhāvā dūtīsādhyā na tathātmanetyācāryāḥ sarvatra śaktiviṣaye svayaṃ sādhanam upapannatarakaṃ durupapādatvāt tasya dūtīprayoga iti vātsyāyanaḥ prathamasāhasā aniyantraṇasaṃbhāṣāśca svayaṃ pratāryāḥ tadviparītāśca dūtyeti prāyovādaḥ svayam abhiyokṣyamāṇastv ādāv eva paricayaṃ kuryāt tasyāḥ svābhāvikaṃ darśanaṃ prāyatnikaṃ ca svābhāvikam ātmano bhavanasaṃnikarṣe prāyatnikaṃ mitrajñātimahāmātravaidyabhavanasaṃnikarṣe vivāhayajñotsavavyasanodyānagamanādiṣu darśane cāsyāḥ satataṃ sākāraṃ prekṣaṇaṃ keśasaṃyamanaṃ nakhāchuraṇam ābharaṇaprahlādanam adharaoṣṭhavimardanaṃ tāstāśca līlā vayasyaiḥ saha prekṣamāṇāyās tatsambaddhāḥ parāpadeśinyaśca kathāstyāgopabhogaprakāśanaṃ sakhyur utsaṅganiṣaṇṇasya sāṅgabhaṅgaṃ jṛmbhaṇam ekabhrūkṣepaṇaṃ mandavākyatā tadvākyaśravaṇaṃ tām uddiśya bālenānyajanena vā sahānyopadiṣṭā dvyarthā kathā tasyāṃ svayaṃ manorathāvedanam anyāpadeśena tām evoddiśya bālacumbanam āliṅganaṃ ca jihvayā cāsya tāmbūladānaṃ pradeśinyā hanudeśaghaṭṭanaṃ tat tad yathāyogaṃ yathāvakāśaṃ ca prayoktavyam tasyāścāṅkagatasya bālasya lālanaṃ bālakrīḍanakānāṃ cāsya dānaṃ grahaṇaṃ tena saṃnikṛṣṭatvāt kathāyojanaṃ tatsaṃbhāṣaṇakṣameṇa janena ca prītim āsādya kāryaṃ tadanubandhaṃ ca gamanāgamanasya yojanaṃ saṃśraye cāsyāstām apaśyato nāma kāmasūtrasaṃkathā prasṛte tu paricaye tasyā haste nyāsaṃ nikṣepaṃ ca nidadhyāt tatpratidinaṃ pratikṣaṇaṃ caikadeśato gṛhṇīyāt saugandhikaṃ pūgaphalāni ca tām ātmano dāraiḥ saha visrambhagoṣṭhyāṃ viviktāsane ca yojayet nityadarśanārthaṃ viśvāsanārthaṃ ca suvarṇakāramaṇikāravaikaṭikanīlīkusumbharañjakādiṣu ca kāmārthinyāṃ sahātmano vaśyaiścaiṣāṃ tatsaṃpādane svayaṃ prayateta tadanuṣṭhānaniratasya lokavidito dīrghakālaṃ saṃdarśanayogaḥ tasmiṃścānyeṣām api karmaṇām anusaṃdhānam yena karmaṇā dravyeṇa kauśalena cārthinī syāt tasya prayogam utpattim āgamam upāyaṃ vijñānaṃ cātmāyattaṃ darśayet pūrvapravṛtteṣu lokacariteṣu dravyaguṇaparīkṣāsu ca tayā tatparijanena ca saha vivādaḥ tatra nirdiṣṭāni paṇitāni teṣv enāṃ prāśnikatvena yojayet tayā tu vivadamāno 'tyantādbhutam iti brūyād iti paricayakāraṇāni kṛtaparicayāṃ darśiteṅgitākārāṃ kanyām ivopāyato 'bhiyuñjīteti prāyeṇa tatra sūkṣmā abhiyogāḥ kanyānām asaṃprayuktatvāt itarāsu tān eva sphuṭam upadadhyāt samprayuktatvāt saṃdarśitākārāyāṃ nirbhinnasadbhāvāyāṃ samupabhogavyatikare tadīyānyupayuñjīta tatra mahārhagandham uttarīyaṃ kusumaṃ ca ātmīyaṃ syād aṅgulīyakaṃ ca taddhastād gṛhītatāmbūlayā goṣṭhīgamanodyatasya keśahastapuṣpayācanam tatra mahārhagandhaṃ spṛhaṇīyaṃ svanakhadaśanapadacihnitaṃ sākāraṃ dadyāt adhikair adhikaiścābhiyogaiḥ sādhvasavicchedanam krameṇa ca viviktadeśe gamanam āliṅganaṃ cumbanaṃ tāmbūlasya grāhaṇaṃ dānānte dravyāṇāṃ parivartanaṃ guhyadeśābhimarśanaṃ cetyabhiyogāḥ yatra caikābhiyuktā na tatrāparām abhiyuñjīta tatra yā vṛddhānubhūtaviṣayā priyopagrahaiśca tām upagṛhṇīyāt ślokāvatra bhavataḥ anyatra dṛṣṭasaṃcārastadbhartā yatra nāyakaḥ na tatra yoṣitaṃ kāṃcit suprāpām api laṅghayet śaṅkitāṃ rakṣitāṃ bhītāṃ saśvaśrūkāṃ ca yoṣitam na tarkayeta medhāvī jānan pratyayam ātmanaḥ abhiyuñjāno yoṣitaḥ pravṛttiṃ parīkṣeta tayā bhāvaḥ parīkṣito bhavati abhiyogāṃśca pratigṛhṇīyāt mantram avṛṇvānāṃ dūtyaināṃ sādhayet apratigṛhyābhiyogaṃ punar api saṃsṛjyamānāṃ dvidhā bhūtamānasāṃ vidyāt tāṃ krameṇa sādhayet apratigṛhyābhiyogaṃ saviśeṣam alaṃkṛtā ca punar dṛśyeta tathaiva tam abhigacchecca vivikte balād grahaṇīyāṃ vidyāt bahūn api viṣahate abhiyogān na ca cireṇāpi prayacchatyātmānaṃ sā śuṣkapratigrāhiṇī paricayavighaṭanasādhyā manuṣyajāteścittānityatvāt abhiyuktāpi pariharati na ca saṃsṛjyate na ca pratyācaṣṭe tasminn ātmani ca gauravābhimānāt sātiparicayāt kṛcchrasādhyā marmajñayā dūtyā tāṃ sādhayet sā ced abhiyujyamānā pāruṣyeṇa pratyādiśatyupekṣyā paruṣayitvāpi tu prītiyojinīṃ sādhayet kāraṇāt saṃsparśanaṃ sahate nāvabudhyate nāma dvidhābhūtamānasā sātatyena kṣāntyā vā sādhyā samīpe śayānāyāḥ supto nāma karam upari vinyaset sāpi suptevopekṣate jāgratī tvapanuded bhūyo 'bhiyogākāṅkṣiṇī etena pādasyopari pādanyāso vyākhyātaḥ tasmin prasṛte bhūyaḥ suptasaṃśleṣaṇam upakramet tad asahamānām utthitāṃ dvitīye ahani prakṛtivartinīm abhiyogārthinīṃ vidyāt adṛśyamānāṃ tu dūtīsādhyām ciram adṛṣṭāpi prakṛtisthaiva saṃsṛjyate kṛtalakṣaṇāṃ tāṃ darśitākārām upakramet anabhiyuktāpyākārayati vivikte cātmānaṃ darśayati savepathugadgadaṃ vadati svinnakaracaraṇāṅguliḥ svinnamukhī ca bhavati śiraḥpīḍane saṃvāhane corvor ātmānaṃ nāyake niyojayati āturā saṃvāhikā caikena hastena saṃvāhayantī dvitīyena bāhunā sparśam āvedayati śleṣayati ca vismitabhāvā nidrāndhā vā parispṛśyorubhyāṃ bāhubhyām api tiṣṭhati alikaikadeśam ūrvor upari pātayati ūrūmūlasaṃvāhane niyuktā na pratilomayati tatraiva hastam ekam avicalaṃ nyasyati aṅgasaṃdaṃśena ca pīḍitaṃ cirād apanayati pratigṛhyaivaṃ nāyakābhiyogān punar dvitīye ahani saṃvāhanāyopagacchati nātyarthaṃ saṃsṛjyate na ca pariharati vivikte bhāvaṃ darśayati niṣkāraṇaṃ cāgūḍham anyatra pracchannapradeśāt saṃnikṛṣṭaparicārakopabhogyā sā ced ākāritāpi tathaiva syāt sā marmajñayā dūtyā sādhyā vyāvartamānā tu tarkaṇīyeti bhāvaparīkṣā bhavanti cātra ślokāḥ ādau paricayaṃ kuryāt tataśca paribhāṣaṇam paribhāṣaṇasaṃmiśraṃ mithaścākāravedanam pratyuttareṇa paśyecced ākārasya parigraham tato 'bhiyuñjīta naraḥ striyaṃ vigatasādhvasaḥ ākāreṇātmano bhāvaṃ yā nārī prāk prayojayet kṣipram evābhiyojyā sā prathame tv eva darśane ślakṣṇam ākāritā yā tu darśayet sphuṭam uttaram sāpi tatkṣaṇasiddheti vijñeyā ratilālasā dhīrāyām apragalbhāyāṃ parīkṣiṇyāṃ ca yoṣiti eṣa sūkṣmo vidhiḥ proktaḥ siddhā eva sphuṭaṃ striyaḥ darśiteṅgitākārāṃ tu praviraladarśanām apūrvāṃ ca dūtyopasarpayet saināṃ śīlato 'nupraviśyākhyānakapaṭaiḥ subhagaṃkaraṇayogair lokavṛttāntaiḥ kavikathābhiḥ pāradārikakathābhiśca tasyāśca rūpavijñānadākṣiṇyaśīlānupraśaṃsābhiśca tāṃ rañjayet katham evaṃvidhāyāstavāyam itthaṃbhūtaḥ patiriti cānuśayaṃ grāhayet na tava subhage dāsyam api kartuṃ yukta iti brūyāt mandavegatām īrṣyālutāṃ śaṭhatām akṛtajñatāṃ cāsaṃbhogaśīlatāṃ kadaryatāṃ capalatām anyāni ca yāni tasmin guptānyasyā abhyāśe sati sadbhāve atiśayena bhāṣeta yena ca doṣeṇodvignāṃ lakṣayet tenaivānupraviśet yadāsau mṛgī tadā naiva śaśatādoṣaḥ etenaiva vaḍavāhastinīviṣayaścoktaḥ nāyikāyā eva tu viśvāsyatām upalabhya dūtītvenopasarpayet prathamasāhasāyāṃ sūkṣmabhāvāyāṃ ceti goṇikāputraḥ sā nāyakasya caritam anulomatāṃ kāmitāni ca kathayet prasṛtasadbhāvāyāṃ ca yuktyā kāryaśarīram itthaṃ vadet śṛṇu vicitram idaṃ subhage tvāṃ kila dṛṣṭvāmutrāsāv itthaṃ gotraputro nāyakaścittonmādam anubhavati prakṛtyā sukumāraḥ kadācid anyatrāparikliṣṭapūrvastapasvī tato 'dhunā śakyam anena maraṇam apyanubhavitum iti varṇayet tatra siddhā dvitīye ahani vāci vaktre dṛṣṭyāṃ ca prasādam upalakṣya punar api kathāṃ pravartayet śṛṇvatyāṃ cāhalyāvimārakaśākuntalādīny anyānyapi laukikāni ca kathayet tadyuktāni vṛṣatāṃ catuḥṣaṣṭivijñatāṃ saubhāgyaṃ ca nāyakasya ślāghanīyatāṃ cāsya pracchannaṃ saṃprayogaṃ bhūtam abhūtapūrvaṃ vā varṇayet ākāraṃ cāsyā lakṣayet savihasitaṃ dṛṣṭvā sambhāṣate āsane copanimantrayate kvāsitaṃ kva śayitaṃ kva bhuktaṃ kva ceṣṭitaṃ kiṃ vā kṛtam iti pṛcchati vivikte darśayatyātmānam ākhyānakāni niyuṅkte cintayantī niḥśvasiti vijṛmbhate ca prītidāyaṃ ca dadāti iṣṭeṣūtsaveṣu ca smarati punar darśanānubandhaṃ visṛjati sādhuvādinī satī kim idam aśobhanam abhidhatsa iti kathām anubadhnāti nāyakasya śāṭhyacāpalyasambaddhān doṣān dadāti pūrvapravṛttaṃ ca tatsaṃdarśanaṃ kathābhiyogaṃ ca svayam akathayantī tayocyamānam ākāṅkṣati nāyakamanoratheṣu ca kathyamāneṣu saparibhavaṃ nāma hasati na ca nirvadatīti dūtyenāṃ darśitākārāṃ nāyakābhijñānair upabṛṃhayet asaṃstutāṃ tu guṇakathanair anurāgakathābhiścāvarjayet nāsaṃstutādṛṣṭākārayor dūtyam astītyauddālakiḥ asaṃstutayor api saṃsṛṣṭākārayor astīti bābhravīyāḥ saṃstutayor apyasaṃsṛṣṭākārayor astīti goṇikāputraḥ asaṃstutayor adṛṣṭākārayor api dūtīpratyayād iti vātsyāyanaḥ tāsāṃ manoharāṇyupāyanāni tāmbūlam anulepanaṃ srajam aṅgulīyakaṃ vāso vā tena prahitaṃ darśayet teṣu nāyakasya yathārthaṃ nakhadaśanapadāni tāni tāni ca cihnāni syuḥ vāsasi ca kuṅkumāṅkam añjaliṃ nidadhyāt pattrachedyāni nānābhiprāyākṛtini darśayet lekhapatragarbhāṇi karṇapattrāṇyāpīḍāṃśca teṣu svamanorathākhyāpanam pratiprābhṛtadāne caināṃ niyojayet evaṃ kṛtaparasparaparigrahayośca dūtīpratyayaḥ samāgamaḥ sa tu devatābhigamane yātrāyām udyānakrīḍāyāṃ jalāvataraṇe vivāhe yajñavyasanotsaveṣv agnyutpāte cauravibhrame janapadasya cakrārohaṇe prekṣāvyāpāreṣu teṣu teṣu ca kāryeṣv iti bābhravīyāḥ sakhībhikṣukīkṣapaṇikātāpasībhavaneṣu sukhopāya iti goṇikāputraḥ tasyā eva tu gehe viditaniṣkramapraveśe cintitātyayapratīkāre praveśanam upapannaṃ niṣkramaṇam avijñātakālaṃ ca tan nityaṃ sukhopāyaṃ ceti vātsyāyanaḥ nisṛṣṭārthā parimitārthā patrahārī svayaṃdūtī mūḍhadūtī bhāryādūtī mūkadūtī vātadūtī ceti dūtīviśeṣāḥ nāyakasya nāyikāyāśca yathāmanīṣitam artham upalabhya svabuddhyā kāryasaṃpādinī nisṛṣṭārthā sā prāyeṇa saṃstutasaṃbhāṣaṇayoḥ nāyikayā prayuktāsaṃstutasaṃbhāṣaṇayor api kautukāccānurūpau yuktāv imau parasparasyetyasaṃstutayor api kāryaikadeśam abhiyogaikadeśaṃ copalabhya śeṣaṃ sampādayatīti parimitārthā sā dṛṣṭaparasparākārayoḥ praviraladarśanayoḥ saṃdeśamātraṃ prāpayatīti patrahārī sā pragāḍhasadbhāvayoḥ saṃsṛṣṭayośca deśakālasaṃbodhanārtham dautyena prahitānyayā svayam eva nāyakam abhigacched ajānatī nāma tena sahopabhogaṃ svapne vā kathayet gotraskhalitaṃ bhāryāṃ cāsya nindet tadvyapadeśena svayam īrṣyāṃ darśayet nakhadaśanacihnitaṃ vā kiṃcid dadyāt bhavate aham adau dātuṃ saṃkalpiteti cābhidadhīta mama bhāryāyā kā ramanīyeti vivikte paryanuyuñjīta sā svayaṃdūtī tasyā vivikte darśanaṃ pratigrahaśca pratigrahacchalenānyām abhisaṃdhāyāsyāḥ saṃdeśaśrāvaṇadvāreṇa nāyakaṃ sādhayet tāṃ copahanyāt sāpi svayaṃdūtī etayā nāyako 'pyanyadūtaśca vyākhyātaḥ nāyakabhāryāṃ mugdhāṃ viśvāsyāyantraṇayānupraviśya nāyakasya ceṣṭitāni pṛcchet yogāñ śikṣayet sākāraṃ maṇḍayet kopam enāṃ grāhayet evaṃ ca pratipadyasveti śrāvayet svayaṃ cāsyāṃ nakhadaśanapadāni nirvartayet tena dvāreṇa nāyakam ākārayet sā mūḍhadūtī tasyāstayaiva pratyuttarāṇi yojayet svabhāryāṃ vā mūḍhāṃ prayojya tayā saha viśvāsena yojayitvā tayaivākārayet ātmanaśca vaicakṣaṇyaṃ prakāśayet sā bhāryādūtī tasyāstayaivākāragrahaṇam bālāṃ vā paricārikām adoṣajñām aduṣṭenopāyena prahiṇuyāt tatra sraji karṇapattre vā gūḍhalekhanidhānaṃ nakhadaśanapadaṃ vā sā mūkadūtī tasyāstayā eva pratyuttaraprārthanam pūrvaprastutārthaliṅgasambaddham anyajanāgrahaṇīyaṃ laukikārthaṃ dvyarthaṃ vā vacanam udāsīnā yā śrāvayet sā vātadūtī tasyā api tayaiva pratyuttaraprārthanam iti tāsāṃ viśeṣāḥ bhavanti cātra ślokāḥ vidhavekṣaṇikā dāsī bhikṣukī śilpakārikā praviśatyāśu viśvāsaṃ dūtīkāryaṃ ca vindati vidveṣaṃ grāhayet patyau ramaṇīyāni varṇayet citrān suratasaṃbhogān anyāsām api darśayet nāyakasyānurāgaṃ ca punaśca ratikauśalam prārthanāṃ cādhikastrībhir avaṣṭambhaṃ ca varṇayet asaṃkalpitam apyartham utsṛṣṭaṃ doṣakāraṇāt punar āvartayatyeva dūtī vacanakauśalāt na rājñāṃ mahāmātrāṇāṃ vā parabhavanapraveśo vidyate mahājanena hi caritam eṣāṃ dṛśyate anuvidhīyate ca savitāram udyantaṃ trayo lokāḥ paśyanti anūdyante ca gacchantam api paśyanty anupratiṣṭhante ca tasmād aśakyatvād garhaṇīyatvācceti na te vṛthā kiṃcid ācareyuḥ avaśyaṃ tv ācaritavye yogān prayuñjīran grāmādhipater ayuktakasya halotthavṛttiputrasya yūno grāmīṇayoṣito vacanamātrasādhyāḥ tāścarṣaṇya ityācakṣate viṭāḥ tābhiḥ saha viṣṭikarmasu koṣṭhāgārapraveśe dravyāṇāṃ niṣkramaṇapraveśanayor bhavanapratisaṃskāre kṣetrakarmaṇi karpāsorṇātasīśaṇavalkalādāne sūtrapratigrahe dravyāṇāṃ krayavikrayavinimayeṣu teṣu teṣu ca karmasu saṃprayogaḥ tathā vrajayoṣidbhiḥ saha gavādhyakṣasya vidhavānāthāpravrajitābhiḥ saha sūtrādhyakṣasya marmajñatvād rātrāvaṭane cāṭantībhir nāgarasya krayavikraye paṇyādhyakṣasya aṣṭamīcandrakaumudīsuvasantakādiṣu pattananagarakharvaṭayoṣitām īśvarabhavane saha antaḥpurikābhiḥ prāyeṇa krīḍā tatra cāpānakānte nagarastriyo yathāparicayam antaḥpurikāṇāṃ pṛthak pṛthag bhogāvāsakān praviśya kathābhir āsitvā pūjitāḥ prapītāścopapradoṣaṃ niṣkrāmayeyuḥ tatra praṇihitā rājadāsī prayojyāyāḥ pūrvasaṃsṛṣṭā tāṃ tatra sambhāṣeta rāmaṇīyakadarśanena yojayet prāg eva svabhavanasthāṃ brūyāt amuṣyāṃ krīḍāyāṃ tava rājabhavanasthānāni rāmaṇīyakāni darśayiṣyāmīti kāle ca yojayet bahiḥ pravālakuṭṭimaṃ te darśayiṣyāmi maṇibhūmikāṃ vṛkṣavāṭikāṃ mṛdvīkāmaṇḍapaṃ samudragṛhaprāsādān gūḍhabhittisaṃcārāṃścitrakarmāṇi krīḍāmṛgān yantrāṇi śakunān vyāghrasiṃhapañjarādīni ca yāni purastād varṇitāni syuḥ ekānte ca tadgatam īśvarānurāgaṃ śrāvayet saṃprayoge cāturyaṃ cābhivarṇayet amantraśrāvaṃ ca pratipannāṃ yojayet apratipadyamānāṃ svayam eveśvara āgatyopacāraiḥ sānvitāṃ rañjayitvā sambhūya ca sānurāgaṃ visṛjet prayojyāyāśca patyur anugrahocitasya dārān nityam antaḥpuram aucityāt praveśayet tatra praṇihitā rājadāsīti samānaṃ pūrveṇa antaḥpurikā vā prayojyayā saha svaceṭikā saṃpreṣaṇena prītiṃ kuryāt prasṛtaprītiṃ ca sāpadeśaṃ darśane niyojayet praviṣṭāṃ pūjitāṃ pītavartīm praṇihitā rājadāsīti samānaṃ pūrveṇa yasmin vā vijñāne prayojyā vikhyātā syāt taddarśanārtham antaḥpurikā sopacāraṃ tām āhvayet praviṣṭāṃ praṇihitā rājadāsīti samānaṃ pūrveṇa udbhūtānarthasya bhītasya vā bhāryāṃ bhikṣukī brūyāt asāvantaḥpurikā rājani siddhā gṛhītavākyā mama vacanaṃ śṛṇoti svabhāvataśca kṛpāśīlā tām anenopāyenādhigamiṣyāmi aham eva te praveśaṃ kārayiṣyāmi sā ca te bhartur mahāntam anarthaṃ nivartayiṣyatīti pratipannāṃ dvistrir iti praveśayet antaḥpurikā cāsyā abhayaṃ dadyāt abhayaśravaṇācca samprahṛṣṭāṃ praṇihitā rājadāsīti samānaṃ pūrveṇa etayā vṛttyarthināṃ mahāmātrābhitaptānāṃ balād vigṛhītānāṃ vyavahāre durbalānāṃ svabhogenāsaṃtuṣṭānāṃ rājani prītikāmānāṃ rājyajaneṣu paṅktim icchatāṃ sajātair bādhyamānānāṃ sajātān bādhitukāmānāṃ sūcakānām anyeṣāṃ kāryavaśināṃ jāyā vyākhyātāḥ anyena vā prayojyāṃ saha saṃsṛṣṭāṃ saṃgrāhya dāsyam upanītāṃ krameṇāntaḥpuraṃ praveśayet praṇidhinā cāyatim asyāḥ saṃdūṣya rājani vidviṣṭa iti kalatrāvagrahopāyenainām antaḥpuraṃ praveśayed iti pracchannayogāḥ ete rājaputreṣu prāyeṇa na tv evaṃ parabhavanam īśvaraḥ praviśet ābhīraṃ hi koṭṭarājaṃ parabhavanagataṃ bhrātṛprayukto rajako jaghāna kāśirājaṃ jayasenam aśvādhyakṣa iti prakāśakāmitāni tu deśapravṛttiyogāt prattā janapadakanyā daśame ahani kiṃcid aupāyanikam upagṛhya praviśantyantaḥpuram upabhuktā eva visṛjyanta ityāndhrāṇām mahāmātreṣvarāṇām antaḥpurāṇi niśi sevārthaṃ rājānam upagacchanti vātsagulmakānām rūpavatīr janapadayoṣitaḥ prītyapadeśena māsaṃ māsārdhaṃ vātivāsayanty antaḥpurikā vaidarbhāṇām darśanīyāḥ svabhāryāḥ prītidāyām eva mahāmātrarājabhyo dadaty aparāntakānām rājakrīḍārthaṃ nagarastriyo janapadastriyaśca saṃghaśa ekaśaśca rājakulaṃ praviśanti saurāṣṭrakāṇām iti ślokāvatra bhavataḥ ete cānye ca bahavaḥ prayogāḥ pāradārikāḥ deśe deśe pravartante rājabhiḥ sampravartitāḥ na tv evaitān prayuñjīta rājā lokahite rataḥ nigṛhītāriṣaḍvargastathā vijayate mahīm nāntaḥpurāṇāṃ rakṣaṇayogāt puruṣasaṃdarśanaṃ vidyate patyuścaikatvād anekasādhāraṇatvāccātṛptiḥ tasmāt tāni prayogata eva parasparaṃ rañjayeyuḥ dhātreyikāṃ sakhīṃ dāsīṃ vā puruṣavad alaṃkṛtyākṛtisaṃyuktaiḥ kandamūlaphalāvayavair apadravyair vātmābhiprāyāṃ nirvartayeyuḥ puruṣapratimā avyaktaliṅgāścādhiśayīran rājānaśca kṛpāśīlā vināpi bhāvayogād āyojitāpadravyā yāvadartham ekayā rātryā bahvībhir api gacchanti yasyāṃ tu prītir vāsaka ṛtuv vā tatrābhiprāyataḥ pravartanta iti prācyopacārāḥ strīyogeṇaiva puruṣāṇām apyalabdhavṛttīnāṃ viyoniṣu vijātiṣu strīpratimāsu kevalopamardanāccābhiprāyanivṛttir vyākhyātā yoṣaveṣāṃśca nāgarakān prāyeṇa antaḥpurikāḥ paricārikābhiḥ saha praveśayanti teṣām upāvartane dhātreyikāśca abhyantarasaṃsṛṣṭā āyatiṃ darśayantyaḥ prayateran sukhapraveśitām apasārabhūmiṃ viśālatāṃ veśmanaḥ pramādaṃ rakṣiṇām anityatāṃ parijanasya varṇayeyuḥ na cāsadbhūtenārthena praveśayituṃ janam āvartayeyur doṣāt nāgarakastu suprāpam apyantaḥpuram apāyabhūyiṣṭhatvān na praviśed iti vātsyāyanaḥ sāpasāraṃ tu pramadavanāvagāḍhaṃ vibhaktadīrghakakṣyam alpapramattarakṣakaṃ proṣitārājakaṃ kāraṇāni samīkṣya bahuśa āhūyamāno 'rthabuddhyā kakṣyāpraveśaṃ ca dṛṣṭvā tābhir eva vihitopāyaḥ praviśet śaktiviṣaye ca pratidinaṃ niṣkrāmet bahiśca rakṣibhir anyad eva kāraṇam apadiśya saṃsṛjyeta antaścāriṇyāṃ ca paricārikāyāṃ viditārthāyāṃ saktam ātmānaṃ rūpayet tadalābhācca śokam antaḥpraveśinībhiśca dūtīkalpaṃ sakalam ācaret rājapraṇidhīṃśca budhyeta dūtyāstvasaṃcāre yatra gṛhītākārāyāḥ prayojyāyā darśanayogastatrāvasthānam tasminn api tu rakṣiṣu paricārikāvyapadeśaḥ cakṣuranubadhnatyām iṅgitākāranivedanam yatra saṃpāto 'syāstatra citrakarmaṇastad yuktasya vyarthānāṃ gītavastukānāṃ krīḍanakānāṃ kṛtacihnānām āpīnakānām aṅgulīyakasya ca nidhānam pratyuttaraṃ tayā dattaṃ prapaśyet tataḥ praveśane yateta yatra cāsyā niyataṃ gamanam iti vidyāt tatra pracchannasya prāg evāvasthānam rakṣipuruṣarūpo vā tadanujñātavelāyāṃ praviśet āstaraṇaprāvaraṇaveṣṭitasya vā praveśanirhārau puṭāpuṭayogair vā naṣṭacchāyārūpaḥ tatrāyaṃ prayogaḥ nakulahṛdayaṃ corakatumbīphalāni sarpākṣīṇi cāntardhūmena pacet tato 'ñjanena samabhāgena peṣayet anenābhyaktanayano naṣṭacchāyārūpaścarati rātrikaumudīṣu ca dīpikāsaṃbādhe suraṅgayā vā tatraitad bhavati dravyāṇām api nirhāre pānakānāṃ praveśane āpānakotsavārthe api ceṭikānāṃ ca saṃbhrame vyatyāse veśmanāṃ caiva rakṣiṇāṃ ca viparyaye udyānayātrāgamane yātrātaśca praveśane dīrghakālodayāṃ yātrāṃ proṣite cāpi rājani praveśanaṃ bhavet prāyo yūnāṃ niṣkramaṇaṃ tathā parasparasya kāryāṇi jñātvā cāntaḥpurālayāḥ ekakāryāstataḥ kuryuḥ śeṣāṇām api bhedanam dūṣayitvā tato 'nyonyam ekakāryārpaṇe sthiraḥ abhedyatāṃ gataḥ sadyo yatheṣṭaṃ phalam aśnute tatra rājakulacāriṇya eva lakṣaṇyān puruṣān antaḥpuraṃ praveśayanti nātisurakṣatvād āparāntikānām kṣatriyasaṃjñakair antaḥpurarakṣibhir evārthaṃ sādhayantyābhīrakāṇām preṣyābhiḥ saha tadveṣān nāgarakaputrān praveśayanti vātsagulmakānām svair eva putrair antaḥpurāṇi kāmacārair jananīvarjam upayujyante vaidarbhakāṇām tathā praveśibhir eva jñātisaṃbandhibhir nānyair upayujyante strairājakānām brāhmaṇair mitrair bhṛtyair dāsaceṭaiśca gauḍānām parispandāḥ karmakarāś cāntaḥpureṣv aniṣiddhā anye api tadrūpāśca saindhavānām arthena rakṣiṇam upagṛhya sāhasikāḥ saṃhatāḥ praviśanti haimavatānām puṣpadānaniyogān nagarabrāhmaṇā rājaviditam antaḥpurāṇi gacchanti paṭāntaritaiścaiṣām ālāpaḥ tena prasaṅgena vyatikaro bhavati vaṅgāṅgakaliṅgakānām saṃhatya navadaśetyekaikaṃ yuvānaṃ pracchādayanti prācyānām iti evaṃ parastriyaḥ prakurvīta ityantaḥpurikāvṛttam ebhya eva ca kāraṇebhyaḥ svadārān rakṣet kāmopadhāśuddhān rakṣiṇo 'ntaḥpure sthāpayed ityācāryāḥ te hi bhayena cārthena cānyaṃ prayojayeyustasmāt kāmabhayārthopadhāśuddhān iti goṇikāputraḥ adroho dharmastam api bhayājjahyād ato dharmabhayopadhāśuddhān iti vātsyāyanaḥ paravākyābhidhāyinībhiśca gūḍhākārābhiḥ pramadābhir ātmadārān upadadhyācchaucāśaucaparijñānārtham iti bābhravīyāḥ duṣṭānāṃ yuvatiṣu siddhatvān nākasmād aduṣṭadūṣaṇam ācared iti vātsyāyanaḥ atigoṣṭhī niraṅkuśatvaṃ bhartuḥ svairatā puruṣaiḥ sahāniyantraṇatā pravāse avasthānaṃ videśe nivāsaḥ svavṛttyupaghātaḥ svairiṇīsaṃsargaḥ patyur īrṣyālutā ceti strīṇāṃ vināśakāraṇāni saṃdṛśya śāstrato yogān pāradārikalakṣitān na yāti chalanāṃ kaścit svadārān prati śāstravit pākṣikatvāt prayogāṇām apāyānāṃ ca darśanāt dharmārthayośca vailomyān nācaret pāradārikam tad etad dāraguptyartham ārabdhaṃ śreyase nṛṇām prajānāṃ dūṣaṇāyaiva na vijñeyo 'sya saṃvidhiḥ veśyānāṃ puruṣādhigame ratir vṛttiśca sargāt ratitaḥ pravartanaṃ svābhāvikaṃ kṛtrimam arthārtham tad api svābhāvikavad rūpayet kāmaparāsu hi puṃsāṃ viśvāsayogāt alubdhatāṃ ca khyāpayet tasya nidarśanārtham na cānupāyenārthān sādhayed āyatisaṃrakṣaṇārtham nityam alaṃkārayoginī rājamārgāvalokinī dṛśyamānā na cātivivṛtā tiṣṭhet paṇyasadharmatvāt yair nāyakam āvarjayed anyābhyaś cāvacchindyād ātmanaścānarthaṃ pratikuryād arthaṃ ca sādhayen na ca gamyaiḥ paribhūyeta tān sahāyān kuryāt te tv ārakṣakapuruṣā dharmādhikaraṇasthā daivajñā vikrāntāḥ śūrāḥ samānavidyāḥ kalāgrāhiṇaḥ pīṭhamardaviṭavidūṣakamālākāragandhikaśauṇḍikarajakanāpitabhikṣukās te ca te ca kāryayogāt kevalārthāstvamī gamyāḥ svatantraḥ pūrve vayasi vartamāno vittavān aparokṣavṛttir adhikaraṇavān akṛcchrādhigatavittaḥ saṃgharṣavān saṃtatāyaḥ subhagamānī ślāghanakaḥ ṣaṇḍakaśca puṃśabdārthī samānaspardhī svabhāvatastyāgī rājani mahāmātre vā siddho daivapramāṇo vittāvamānī gurūṇāṃ śāsanātigaḥ sajātānāṃ lakṣyabhūtaḥ savitta ekaputro liṅgī pracchannakāmaḥ śūro vaidyaśceti prītiyaśo'rthāstu guṇato 'dhigamyāḥ mahākulīno viddhān sarvasamayajñaḥ kavir ākhyānakuśalo vāgmī pragalbho vividhaśilpajño vṛddhadarśī sthūlalakṣo mahotsāho dṛḍhabhaktir anasūyakastyāgī mitravatsalo ghaṭāgoṣṭhīprekṣaṇakasamājasamasyākrīḍanaśīlo nīrujo 'vyaṅgaśarīraḥ prāṇavān amadyapo vṛṣo maitraḥ strīṇāṃ praṇetā lālayitā ca na cāsāṃ vaśagaḥ svatantravṛttir aniṣṭhuro 'nīrṣyālur anavaśaṅkī ceti nāyakaguṇāḥ nāyikāyāḥ punā rūpayauvanalakṣaṇamādhuryayoginī guṇeṣvanuraktā na tathārtheṣu prītisaṃyogaśīlā sthiram atirekajātīyā viśeṣārthinī nityam akadaryavṛttir goṣṭhīkalāpriyā ceti nāyikā punarbuddhiśīlācāra ārjavaṃ kṛtajñatā dīrghadūradarśitvaṃ avisaṃvāditā deśakālajñatā nāgarakatā dainyātihāsapaiśunyaparivādakrodhalobhastambhacāpalavarjanaṃ pūrvābhibhāṣitā kāmasūtrakauśalaṃ tadaṅgavidyāsu ceti sādhāraṇaguṇāḥ guṇaviparyaye doṣāḥ kṣayī rogī kṛmiśakṛdvāyasāsyaḥ priyakalatraḥ paruṣavāk kadaryo nirghṛṇo gurujanaparityaktaḥ steno dambhaśīlo mūlakarmaṇi prasakto mānāpamānayor anapekṣī dveṣyair apyarthahāryo vilajja ityagamyāḥ rāgo bhayam arthaḥ saṃgharṣo vairaniryātanaṃ jijñāsā pakṣaḥ khedo gharmo yaśo 'nukampā suhṛdvākyaṃ hrīḥ priyasādṛśyaṃ dhanyatā rāgāpanayaḥ sājātyaṃ sāhaveśyaṃ sātatyam āyatiśca gamanakāraṇāni bhavantītyācāryāḥ artho 'narthapratīghātaḥ prītiśceti vātsyāyanaḥ arthastu prītyā na bādhitaḥ asya prādhānyāt bhayādiṣu tu gurulāghavaṃ parīkṣyam iti sahāyagamyāgamyakāraṇacintā upamantritāpi gamyena sahasā na pratijānīyāt puruṣāṇāṃ sulabhāvamānitvāt bhāvajijñāsārthaṃ paricārakamukhān saṃvāhakagāyanavaihāsikān gamye tadbhaktān vā praṇidadhyāt tadabhāve pīṭhamardādīn tebhyo nāyakasya śaucāśaucaṃ rāgāparāgau saktāsaktāṃ dānādāne ca vidyāt saṃbhāvitena ca saha viṭapurogāṃ prītiṃ yojayet lāvakakukkuṭameṣayuddhaśukaśārikāpralāpanaprekṣaṇakakalāvyapadeśena pīṭhamardo nāyakaṃ tasyā udavasitam ānayet tāṃ vā tasya āgatasya prītikautukajananaṃ kiṃcid dravyajātaṃ svayam idam asādhāraṇopabhogyam iti prītidāyaṃ dadyāt yatra ca ramate tayā goṣṭhyainam upacāraiśca rañjayet gate ca saparihāsapralāpāṃ sopāyanāṃ paricārikām abhīkṣṇaṃ preṣayet sapīṭhamardāyāśca kāraṇāpadeśena svayaṃ gamanam iti gamyopāvartanam bhavanti cātra ślokāḥ tāmbūlāni srajaścaiva saṃskṛtaṃ cānulepanam āgatasyāharet prītyā kalāgoṣṭhīśca yojayet dravyāṇi praṇaye dadyāt kuryācca parivartanam saṃprayogasya cākūtaṃ nijenaiva prayojayet prītidāyair upanyāsair upacāraiśca kevalaiḥ gamyena saha saṃsṛṣṭā rañjayet taṃ tataḥ param saṃyuktā nāyakena tadrañjanārtham ekacāriṇīvṛttam anutiṣṭhet rañjayenna tu sajjeta saktavacca viceṣṭeteti saṃkṣepoktiḥ mātari ca krūraśīlāyām arthaparāyāṃ cāyattā syāt tadabhāve mātṛkāyām sā tu gamyena nātiprīyeta prasahya ca duhitaram ānayet tatra tu nāyikāyāḥ saṃtatam aratir nirvedo vrīḍābhayaṃ ca na tv eva śāsanātivṛttiḥ vyādhiṃ caikam animittam ajugupsitam acakṣurgrāhyam anityaṃ ca khyāpayet sati kāraṇe tadapadeśaṃ ca nāyakān abhigamanam nirmālyasya tu nāyikā ceṭikāṃ preṣayet tāmbūlasya ca vyavāye tadupacāreṣu vismayaś catuḥṣaṣṭyāṃ śiṣyatvaṃ tadupadiṣṭānāṃ ca yogānām ābhīkṣṇyenānuyogas tatsātmyād rahasi vṛttir manorathānām ākhyānaṃ guhyānāṃ vaikṛtapracchādanaṃ śayane parāvṛttasyānupekṣaṇam ānulomyaṃ guhyasparśane suptasya cumbanam āliṅganaṃ ca prekṣaṇam anyamanaskasya rājamārge ca prāsādasthāyāstatra viditāyā vrīḍāśāṭhyanāśaḥ taddveṣye dveṣyatā tatpriye priyatā tam anu harṣaśokau strīṣu jijñāsā kopaś cādīrghaḥ svakṛteṣvapi nakhadaśanacihneṣvanyāśaṅkā anurāgasyāvacanam ākāratastu darśayet madasvapnavyādhiṣu tu nirvacanam ślāghyānāṃ nāyakakarmaṇāṃ ca tasmin bruvāṇe vākyārthagrahaṇam tadavadhārya praśaṃsāviṣaye bhāṣaṇam tadvākyasya cottareṇa yojanam bhaktimāṃścet kathāsvanuvṛttir anyatra sapatnyāḥ niḥśvāse jṛmbhite skhalite patite vā tasya cārtim āśaṃsīta kṣutavyāhṛtavismiteṣu jīvetyudāharaṇam daurmanasye vyādhidaurhṛdāpadeśaḥ guṇataḥ parasyākīrtanam na nindā samānadoṣasya dattasya dhāraṇam vṛthāparādhe tadvyasane vālaṃkārasyāgrahaṇam abhojanaṃ ca tadyuktāśca vilāpāḥ tena saha deśamokṣaṃ rocayed rājani niṣkrayaṃ ca sāmarthyam āyuṣastadavāptau tasyārthādhigame abhipretasiddhau śarīropacaye vā pūrvasaṃbhāṣita iṣṭadevatopahāraḥ nityam alaṃkārayogaḥ parimito 'bhyavahāraḥ gīte ca nāmagotrayor grahaṇam glānyām urasi lalāṭe ca karaṃ kurvīta tatsukham upalabhya nidrālābhaḥ utsaṅge cāsyopaveśanaṃ svapanaṃ ca gamanaṃ viyoge tasmāt putrārthinī syāt āyuṣo nādhikyam icchet etasyāvijñātam arthaṃ rahasi na brūyāt vratam upavāsaṃ cāsya nirvartayet mayi doṣa iti aśakye svayam api tadrūpā syāt vivāde tenāpyaśakyam ityarthanirdeśaḥ tadīyam ātmīyaṃ vā svayam aviśeṣeṇa paśyet tena vinā goṣṭhyādīnām agamanam iti nirmālyadhāraṇe ślāghā ucchiṣṭabhojane ca kulaśīlaśilpajātividyāvarṇavittadeśamitraguṇavayomādhuryapūjā gītādiṣu codanam abhijñasya bhayaśītoṣṇavarṣāṇy anapekṣya tadabhigamanam sa eva ca me syād ityaurdhvadehikeṣu vacanam tadiṣṭarasabhāvaśīlānuvartanam mūlakarmābhiśaṅkā tadabhigamane ca jananyā saha nityo vivādaḥ balāt kāreṇa ca yadyanyatra tayā nīyeta tadā viṣamanaśanaṃ śastraṃ rajjum iti kāmayeta pratyāyanaṃ ca praṇidhibhir nāyakasya svayaṃ vātmano vṛttigrahaṇam na tv evārtheṣu vivādaḥ mātrā vinā kiṃcin na ceṣṭeta pravāse śīghrāgamanāya śāpadānam proṣite mṛjāniyamaścālaṃkārasya pratiṣedhaḥ maṅgalaṃ tvapekṣyam ekaṃ śaṅkhavalayaṃ vā dhārayet smaraṇam atītānām nakṣatracandrasūryatārābhyaḥ spṛhaṇam iṣṭasvapnadarśane tatsaṃgamo mamāstv iti vacanam udvego 'niṣṭe śāntikarma ca pratyāgate kāmapūjā devatopahārāṇāṃ karaṇam sakhībhiḥ pūrṇapātrasyāharaṇam vāyasapūjā ca prathamasamāgamānantaraṃ caitad eva vāyasapūjāvarjam saktasya cānumaraṇaṃ brūyāt nisṛṣṭabhāvaḥ samānavṛttiḥ prayojanakārī nirāśaṅko nirapekṣo 'rtheṣv iti saktalakṣaṇāni tad etan nirdarśanārthaṃ dattakaśāsanād uktam anuktaṃ ca lokataḥ śīlayet puruṣaprakṛtitaśca bhavataścātra ślokau sūkṣmatvād atilobhācca prakṛtyājñānatastathā kāmalakṣma tu durjñānaṃ strīṇāṃ tadbhāvitair api kāmayante virajyante rañjayanti tyajanti ca karṣayantyo 'pi sarvārthāñ jñāyante naiva yoṣitaḥ saktādivittādānaṃ svābhāvikam upāyataśca tatra svābhāvikaṃ saṃkalpāt samadhikaṃ vā labhamānā nopāyān prayuñjītetyācāryāḥ viditam apyupāyaiḥ pariṣkṛtaṃ dviguṇaṃ dāsyatīti vātsyāyanaḥ alaṃkārabhakṣyabhojyapeyamālyavastragandhadravyādīnāṃ vyavahāriṣu kālikam uddhārārtham arthapratinayanena tatsamakṣaṃ tadvittapraśaṃsā vratavṛkṣārāmadevakulataḍāgodyānotsavaprītidāyavyapadeśaḥ tadabhigamananimitto rakṣibhiścaurair vālaṃkāraparimoṣaḥ dāhāt kuḍyacchedāt pramādād bhavane cārthanāśaḥ tathā yācitālaṃkārāṇāṃ nāyakālaṃkārāṇāṃ ca tadabhigamanārthasya vyayasya praṇidhibhir nivedanam tadartham ṛṇagrahaṇam suhṛtkāryeṣvanabhigamanam anabhihārahetoḥ taiśca pūrvam āhṛtā guravo 'bhihārāḥ pūrvam upanītāḥ pūrvaṃ śrāvitāḥ syuḥ ucitānāṃ kriyāṇāṃ vicchittiḥ nāyakārthaṃ ca śilpiṣu kāryam vaidyamahāmātrayor upakārikriyā kāryahetoḥ mitrāṇāṃ copakāriṇāṃ vyasaneṣvabhyupapattiḥ gṛhakarma sakhyāḥ putrasyotsañjanam dohado vyādhir mitrasya duḥkhāpanayanam iti alaṃkāraikadeśavikrayo nāyakasyārthe tayā śīlitasya cālaṃkārasya bhāṇḍopaskarasya vā vaṇijo vikrayārthaṃ darśanam pratigaṇikānāṃ ca sadṛśasya bhāṇḍasya vyatikare prativiśiṣṭasya grahaṇam pūrvopakārāṇām avismaraṇam anukīrtanaṃ ca praṇidhibhiḥ pratigaṇikānāṃ lābhātiśayaṃ śrāvayet tāsu nāyakasamakṣam ātmano 'bhyadhikaṃ lābhaṃ bhūtam abhūtaṃ vā vrīḍitā nāma varṇayet pūrvayogināṃ ca lābhātiśayena punaḥ saṃdhāne yatamānānām āviṣkṛtaḥ pratiṣedhaḥ tatspardhināṃ tyāgayogināṃ nidarśanam na punar eṣyatīti bālayācitakam ityarthāgamopāyāḥ viraktaṃ ca nityam eva prakṛtivikriyāto vidyāt mukhavarṇācca ūnam atiriktaṃ vā dadāti pratilomaiḥ sambadhyate vyapadiśyānyat karoti ucitam ācchinatti pratijñātam vismarati svapakṣaiḥ saṃjñayā bhāṣate mitrakāryam apadiśyānyatra śete pūrvasaṃsṛṣṭāyāśca parijanena mithaḥ kathayati tasya sāradravyāṇi prāg avabodhād anyāpadeśena haste kurvīta tāni cāsyā hastād uttamarṇaḥ prasahya gṛhṇīyāt vivadamānena saha dharmastheṣu vyavahared iti viraktapratipattiḥ saktaṃ tu pūrvopakāriṇam apyalpaphalaṃ vyalīkenānupālayet asāraṃ tu niṣpratipattikam upāyayo 'pavāhayet anyam avaṣṭabhya ninditābhyāsaḥ oṣṭhanirbhogaḥ pādena bhūmer abhighātaḥ avijñātaviṣayasya saṃkathā tadvijñāteṣvavismayaḥ kutsā ca darpavighātaḥ adhikaiḥ saha saṃvāsaḥ anapekṣaṇam samānadoṣāṇāṃ nindā rahasi cāvasthānam ratopacāreṣūdvegaḥ mukhasyādānam jaghanasya rakṣaṇam nakhadaśanakṣatebhyo jugupsā parisvaṅge bhujamayyā sūcyā vyavadhānam stabdhatā gātrāṇām sakthnor vyatyāsaḥ nidrāparatvaṃ ca śrāntam upalabhya codanā aśaktau hāsaḥ śaktāvanabhinandanam divāpi bhāvam upalabhya mahājanābhigamanam vākyeṣu chalagrahaṇam anarmaṇi hāsaḥ narmaṇi cānyam apadiśya hasati vadati tasmin kaṭākṣeṇa parijanasya prekṣaṇaṃ tāḍanaṃ ca āhatya cāsya kathām anyāḥ kathāḥ tadvyalīkānāṃ vyasanānāṃ cāparihāryāṇām anukīrtanam marmaṇāṃ ca ceṭikayopakṣepaṇam āgate cādarśanam ayācyayācanam ante svayaṃ mokṣaśceti parigrahakasyeti dattakasya bhavataścātra ślokau parīkṣya gamyaiḥ saṃyogaḥ saṃyuktasyānurañjanam raktād arthasya cādānam ante mokṣaśca vaiśikam evam etena kalpena sthitā veśyā parigrahe nātisaṃdhīyate gamyaiḥ karotyarthāṃśca puṣkalān vartamānaṃ niṣpīḍitārtham utsṛjantī pūrvasaṃsṛṣṭena saha saṃdadhyāt sa ced avasitārtho vittavān sānurāgaśca tataḥ saṃdheyaḥ anyatra gatastarkayitavyaḥ sa kāryayuktyā ṣaḍvidhaḥ itaḥ svayam apasṛtas tato 'pi svayam evāpasṛtaḥ itastataśca niṣkāsitāpasṛtaḥ itaḥ svayam apasṛtastato niṣkāsitāpasṛtaḥ itaḥ svayam apasṛtastatra sthitaḥ ito niṣkāsitāpasṛtastataḥ svayam apasṛtaḥ ito niṣkāsitāpasṛtastatra sthitaḥ itastataśca svayam evāpasṛtyopajapati ced ubhayor guṇān apekṣī calabuddhir asaṃdheyaḥ itastataśca niṣkāsitāpasṛtaḥ sthirabuddhiḥ sa ced anyato bahulabhamānayā niṣkāsitaḥ syāt sasāro 'pi tayā roṣito mamāmarṣād bahu dāsyatīti saṃdheyaḥ niḥsāratayā kadaryatayā vā tyakto na śreyān itaḥ svayam apasṛtastato niṣkāsitāpasṛto yadyatiriktam ādau ca dadyāt tataḥ pratigrāhyaḥ itaḥ svayam apasṛtya tatra sthita upajapaṃstarkayitavyaḥ viśeṣārthī cāgatastato viśeṣam apaśyann āgantukāmo māṃ jijñāsitukāmaḥ sa āgatya sānurāgatvād dāsyati tasyāṃ vā doṣān dṛṣṭvā mayi bhūyiṣṭhān guṇān adhunā paśyati sa guṇadarśī bhūyiṣṭhaṃ dāsyati bālo vā naikatradṛṣṭir atisaṃdhānapradhāno vā haridrārāgo vā yat kiṃcanakārī vā ityavetya saṃdadhyān na vā ito niṣkāsitāpasṛtastataḥ svayam apasṛta upajapaṃstarkayitavyaḥ anurāgād āgantukāmaḥ sa bahu dāsyati mama guṇair bhāvito yo 'nyasyāṃ na ramate pūrvam ayogena vā mayā niṣkāsitaḥ sa māṃ śīlayitvā vairaṃ niryātayitukāmo dhanam abhiyogād vā mayāsyāpahṛtaṃ tadviśvāsya pratīpam ādātukāmo nirveṣṭukāmo vā māṃ vartamānodbhedayitvā tyaktukāma ityakalyāṇabuddhir asaṃdheyaḥ anyathābuddhiḥ kālena lambhayitavyaḥ ito niṣkāsitastatra sthita upajapann etena vyākhyātaḥ teṣu upajapatsvanyatra sthitaḥ svayam upajapet vyalīkārthaṃ niṣkāsito mayāsāvanyatra gato yatnād ānetavyaḥ itaḥ pravṛttasaṃbhāṣo vā tato bhedam avāpsyati vartamānasya ced arthavighātaṃ kariṣyati arthāgamakālo vāsya sthānavṛddhir asya jātā labdham anenādhikaraṇam dārair viyuktaḥ pāratantryād vyāvṛttaḥ pitrā bhrātrā vā vibhaktaḥ anena vā pratibaddham anena saṃdhiṃ kṛtvā nāyakaṃ dhaninam avāpsyāmi vimānito vā bhāryayā tam eva tasyāṃ vikramayiṣyāmi asya vā mitraṃ maddveṣiṇīṃ sapatnīṃ kāmayate tad amunā bhedayiṣyāmi calacittatayā vā lāghavam enam āpādayiṣyāmīti tasya pīṭhamardādayo mātur dauḥśīlyena nāyikāyāḥ satyapyanurāge vivaśāyāḥ pūrvaṃ niṣkāsanaṃ varṇayeyuḥ vartamānena cākāmāyāḥ saṃsargaṃ vidveṣaṃ ca tasyāśca sābhijñānaiḥ pūrvānurāgair enaṃ pratyāpayeyuḥ abhijñānaṃ ca tatkṛtopakārasambaddhaṃ syād iti viśīrṇapratisaṃdhānam apūrvapūrvasaṃsṛṣṭayoḥ pūrvasaṃsṛṣṭaḥ śreyān sa hi viditaśīlo dṛṣṭarāgaśca sūpacāro bhavatītyācāryāḥ pūrvasaṃsṛṣṭaḥ sarvato niṣpīḍitārthatvān nātyartham arthado duḥkhaṃ ca punarviśvāsayitum apūrvastu sukhenānurajyata iti vātsyāyanaḥ tathāpi puruṣaprakṛtito viśeṣaḥ bhavanti cātra ślokāḥ anyāṃ bhedayituṃ gamyād anyato gamyam eva vā sthitasya copaghātārthaṃ punaḥ saṃdhānam iṣyate bibhetyanyasya saṃyogād vyalīkāni ca nekṣate atisaktaḥ pumān yatra bhayād bahu dadāti ca asaktam abhinandeta saktaṃ paribhavet tathā anyadūtānupāte ca yaḥ syād ativiśāradaḥ tatropayāyinaṃ pūrvaṃ nārī kālena yojayet bhaveccācchinnasaṃdhānā na ca saktaṃ parityajet saktaṃ tu vaśinaṃ nārī sambhāṣyāpyanyato vrajet tataścārtham upādāya saktam evānurañjayet āyatiṃ prasamīkṣyādau lābhaṃ prītiṃ ca puṣkalām sauhṛdaṃ pratisaṃdadhyād viśīrṇaṃ strī vicakṣaṇā gamyabāhulye bahu pratidinaṃ ca labhamānā naikaṃ pratigṛhṇīyāt deśaṃ kālaṃ sthitim ātmano guṇān saubhāgyaṃ cānyābhyo nyūnātiriktatāṃ cāvekṣya rajanyām arthaṃ sthāpayet gamye dūtāṃśca prayojayet tatpratibaddhāṃśca svayaṃ prahiṇuyāt dvistriścatur iti lābhātiśayagrahārtham ekasyāpi gacchet parigrahaṃ ca caret gamyayaugapadye tu lābhasāmye yad dravyārthinī syāt taddāyini viśeṣaḥ pratyakṣa ityācāryāḥ apratyādeyatvāt sarvakāryāṇāṃ tanmūlatvāddhiraṇyada iti vātsyāyanaḥ suvarṇarajatatāmrakāṃsyalohabhāṇḍopaskarāstaraṇaprāvaraṇavāsoviśeṣagandhadravyakaṭukabhāṇḍaghṛtatailadhānyapaśujātīnāṃ pūrvapūrvato viśeṣaḥ yat tatra sāmyād vā dravyasāmye mitravākyād atipātitvād āyatito gamyaguṇataḥ prītitaśca viśeṣaḥ rāgityāginostyāgini viśeṣaḥ pratyakṣa ityācāryāḥ śakyo hi rāgiṇi tyāga ādhātum lubdho 'pi hi raktastyajati na tu tyāgī nirbandhād rajyata iti vātsyāyanaḥ tatrāpi dhanavadadhanavator dhanavati viśeṣaḥ tyāgiprayojanakartroḥ prayojanakartari viśeṣaḥ pratyakṣa ityācāryāḥ prayojanakartā sakṛt kṛtvā kṛtinam ātmānaṃ manyate tyāgī punar atītaṃ nāpekṣata iti vātsyāyanaḥ tatrāpyātyayikato viśeṣaḥ kṛtajñatyāginostyāgini viśeṣaḥ pratyakṣa ityācāryāḥ ciram ārādhito 'pi tyāgī vyalīkam ekam upalabhya pratigaṇikayā vā mithyādūṣitaḥ śramam atītaṃ nāpekṣate prāyeṇa hi tejasvina ṛjavo 'nādṛtāśca tyāgino bhavanti kṛtajñastu pūrvaśramāpekṣī na sahasā virajyate parīkṣitaśīlatvācca na mithyā dūṣyata iti vātsyāyanaḥ tatrāpyāyatito viśeṣaḥ mitravacanārthāgamayor arthāgame viśeṣaḥ pratyakṣa ityācāryāḥ so 'pi hyarthāgamo bhavitā mitraṃ tu sakṛd vākye pratihate kaluṣitaṃ syād iti vātsyāyanaḥ tatrāpyatipātato viśeṣaḥ tatra kāryasaṃdarśanena mitram anunīya śvobhūte vacanam astv iti tato 'tipātinam arthaṃ pratigṛhṇīyāt arthāgamānarthapratīghātayor arthāgame viśeṣaḥ pratyakṣa ityācāryāḥ arthaḥ parimitāvacchedaḥ anarthaḥ punaḥ sakṛtprasṛto na jñāyate kvāvatiṣṭhata iti vātsyāyanaḥ tatrāpi gurulāghavakṛto viśeṣaḥ etenārthasaṃśayād anarthapratīkāre viśeṣo vyākhyātaḥ devakulataḍāgārāmāṇām karaṇam sthalīnām agnicaityānāṃ nibandhanam gosahasrāṇāṃ pātrāntaritaṃ brāhmaṇebhyo dānam devatānāṃ pūjopahārapravartanam tadvyayasahiṣṇor vā dhanasya parigrahaṇam ityuttamagaṇikānāṃ lābhātiśayaḥ sārvāṅgiko 'laṃkārayogo gṛhasyodārasya karaṇam mahārhair bhāṇḍaiḥ paricārakaiśca gṛhaparicchadasyojjvalateti rūpājīvānāṃ lābhātiśayaḥ nityaṃ śuklam ācchādanam apakṣudham annapānaṃ nityaṃ saugandhikena tāmbūlena ca yogaḥ sahiraṇyabhāgam alaṃkaraṇam iti kumbhadāsīnāṃ lābhātiśayaḥ etena pradeśena madhyamādhamānām api lābhātiśayān sarvāsām eva yojayed ityācāryāḥ deśakālavibhavasāmarthyānurāgalokapravṛttivaśād aniyatalābhādiyamavṛttir iti vātsyāyanaḥ gamyam anyato nivārayitukāmā saktam anyasyām apahartukāmā vā anyāṃ vā lābhato viyuyukṣamāṇāgamyasaṃsargād ātmanaḥ sthānaṃ vṛddhim āyatim abhigamyatāṃ ca manyamānā anarthapratīkāre vā sāhāyam enaṃ kārayitukāmā saktasya vā anyasya vyalīkārthinī pūrvopakāram akṛtam iva paśyantī kevala prītyarthinī vā kalyāṇabuddher alpam api lābhaṃ pratigṛhṇīyāt āyatyarthinī tu tam āśritya cānarthaṃ praticikīrṣantī naiva pratigṛhṇīyāt tyakṣyāmyenam anyataḥ pratisaṃdhāsyāmi gamiṣyati dārair yokṣyate nāśayiṣyatyanarthān aṅkuśabhūta uttarādhyakṣo 'syāgamiṣyati svāmī pitā vā sthānabhraṃśo vāsya bhaviṣyati calacittaśceti manyamānā tadātve tasmāl lābham icchet pratijñātam īśvareṇa pratigrahaṃ lapsyate adhikaraṇaṃ sthānaṃ vā prāpsyati vṛttikālo 'sya vā āsannaḥ vāhanam asyā gamiṣyati sthalapattraṃ vā sasyam asya pakṣyate kṛtam asmin na naśyati nityam avisaṃvādako vetyāyatyām icchet parigrahakalpaṃ vācaret bhavanti cātra ślokāḥ kṛcchrādhigatavittāṃśca rājavallabhaniṣṭhurān āyātyāṃ ca tadātve ca dūrād eva vivarjayet anartho varjane yeṣāṃ gamane abhyudayastathā prayatnenāpi tān gṛhya sāpadeśam upakramet prasannā ye prayacchanti svalpe apyagaṇitaṃ vasu sthūlalakṣān mahotsāhāṃstān gacchet svair api vyayaiḥ arthān ācaryamāṇān anarthā apyanūdbhavantyanubandhāḥ saṃśayāśca te buddhidaurbalyād atirāgād atyabhimānād atidambhād atyārjavād ativiśvāsād atikrodhāt pramādāt sāhasād daivayogācca syuḥ teṣāṃ phalaṃ kṛtasya vyayasya niṣphalatvam anāyatirāgam iṣyato 'rthasya nivartanam āptasya niṣkramaṇaṃ pāruṣyasya prāptir gamyatā śarīrasya praghātaḥ keśānāṃ chedanaṃ pātanam aṅgavaikalyāpattiḥ tasmāt tān ādita eva parijihīrṣed arthabhūyiṣṭhāṃścopekṣeta artho dharmaḥ kāma ityarthatrivargaḥ anartho 'dharmo dveṣa ityanarthatrivargaḥ teṣv ācaryamāṇeṣvanyasyāpi niṣpattir anubandhaḥ saṃdigdhāyāṃ tu phalaprāptau syād vā na veti śuddhasaṃśayaḥ idaṃ vā syād idaṃ veti saṃkīrṇaḥ ekasmin kriyamāṇe kārye kāryadvayasyotpattir ubhayato yogaḥ samantād utpattiḥ samantatoyoga iti tān udāhariṣyāmaḥ vicāritarūpo 'rthatrivargaḥ tadviparīta evānarthatrivargaḥ yasyottamasyābhigamane pratyakṣato 'rthalābho grahaṇīyatvam āyatir āgamaḥ prārthanīyatvaṃ cānyeṣāṃ syāt so 'rtho 'rthānubandhaḥ lābhamātre kasyacid anyasya gamanaṃ so 'rtho niranubandhaḥ anyārthaparigrahe saktād āyaticchedanam arthasya niṣkramaṇaṃ lokavidviṣṭasya vā nīcasya gamanam āyatighnam artho 'narthānubandhaḥ svena vyayena śūrasya mahāmātrasya prabhavato vā lubdhasya gamanaṃ niṣphalam api vyasanapratīkārārthaṃ mahataścārthaghnasya nimittasya praśamanam āyatijananaṃ vā so 'nartho 'rthānubandhaḥ kadaryasya subhagamāninaḥ kṛtaghnasya vātisaṃdhānaśīlasya svair api vyayaistathārādhanam ante niṣphalaṃ so 'nartho niranubandhaḥ tasyaiva rājavallabhasya krauryaprabhāvādhikasya tathaivārādhanam ante niṣphalaṃ niṣkāsanaṃ ca doṣakaraṃ so 'nartho 'narthānubandhaḥ evaṃ dharmakāmayor apyanubandhān yojayet paraspareṇa ca yuktyā saṃkired ityanubandhāḥ paritoṣito 'pi dāsyati na vetyarthasaṃśayaḥ niṣpīḍitārtham aphalam utsṛjantyā artham alabhamānāyā dharmaḥ syān na veti dharmasaṃśayaḥ abhipretam upalabhya paricārakam anyaṃ vā kṣudraṃ gatvā kāmaḥ syān na veti kāmasaṃśayaḥ prabhāvavān kṣudro 'nabhimato 'narthaṃ kariṣyati na vetyanarthasaṃśayaḥ atyantaniṣphalaḥ saktaḥ parityaktaḥ pitṛlokaṃ yāyāt tatrādharmaḥ syān na vetyadharmasaṃśayaḥ rāgasyāpi vivakṣāyām abhipretam anupalabhya virāgaḥ iti śuddhasaṃśayāḥ atha saṃkīrṇāḥ āgantor aviditaśīlasya vallabhasaṃśrayasya prabhaviṣṇor vā samupasthitasyārādhanam artho 'nartha iti saṃśayaḥ śrotriyasya brahmacāriṇo dīkṣitasya vratino liṅgino vā māṃ dṛṣṭvā jātarāgasya mumūrṣor mitravākyād ānṛśaṃsyācca gamanaṃ dharmo 'dharma iti saṃśayaḥ lokād evākṛtapratyayād aguṇo guṇavān vety anavekṣya gamanaṃ kāmo dveṣa iti saṃśayaḥ saṃkirecca paraspareṇeti saṃkīrṇasaṃśayāḥ yatra parasyābhigamane arthaḥ saktācca saṃgharṣataḥ sa ubhayayo 'rthaḥ yatra svena vyayena niṣphalam abhigamanaṃ saktāccāmarṣitād vittapratyādānaṃ sa ubhayato 'narthaḥ yatrābhigamane artho bhaviṣyati na vetyāśaṅkā sakto 'pi saṃgharṣād dāsyati na veti sa ubhayato 'rthasaṃśayaḥ yatrābhigamane vyayavati pūrvo viruddhaḥ krodhād tagaratālīsatamālapatrayuktāny anulepanam mayūrasyākṣitarakṣor vā suvarṇenālipya dakṣiṇahastena dhārayed iti subhagaṃkaraṇam tathā bādaraṃ maṇiṃ śaṅkhamaṇiṃ ca teṣāṃ cātharvaṇān yogān gamayet vidyātantrācca vidyāyogāt prāptayauvanāṃ paricārikāṃ svāmī saṃvatsaramātram anyato dhārayet tato dhāritāṃ bālāṃ matvā lālasībhūteṣu gamyeṣu yo 'syāḥ saṃharṣeṇa bahu dadyāt tasmai visṛjed iti artham alabhamānā tu svenāpyekadeśena duhitre etad dattam aneneti khyāpayet pracchannaṃ vā taiḥ saṃyojya svayam ajānatī bhūtvā tato viditeṣv evaṃ dharmastheṣu nivedayet sakhyaiva tu dāsyā vā mayūrāsthicūrṇāvacūrṇaṃ vaśīkaraṇam svayaṃmṛtāyā maṇḍalakārikāyāścūrṇaṃ madhusaṃyuktaṃ sahāmalakaiḥ snānaṃ vaśīkaraṇam vajrasnuhīgaṇḍakāni khaṇḍaśaḥ kṛtāni manaḥśilāgandhapāṣāṇacūrṇenābhyajya ācakṣate caṭakāṇḍarasabhāvitaistaṇḍulaiḥ pāyasaṃ siddhaṃ madhusarpirbhyāṃ plāvitaṃ yāvadartham iti samānaṃ pūrveṇa caṭakāṇḍarasabhāvitān apagatatvacastilān śṛṅgāṭakakaserukasvayaṃguptāphalāni godhūmamāṣacūrṇaiḥ saśarkareṇa payasā sarpiṣā ca pakvaṃ pāyasaṃ yāvadarthaṃ prāśitam iti samānaṃ pūrveṇa sarpiṣo madhunaḥ śarkarāyā madhukasya ca dve dve pale madhurasāyāḥ karṣaḥ prasthaṃ payasa iti ṣaḍaṅgam amṛtaṃ medhyaṃ vṛṣyam āyuṣyaṃ yuktarasam ity ācakṣate śatāvarīśvadaṃṣṭrāguḍakaṣāye pippalīmadhukalke gokṣīracchāgaghṛte pakve tasya puṣpārambheṇānvahaṃ prāśanaṃ medhyaṃ vṛṣyam āyuṣyaṃ
