ISynopsis

Bhogali means enjoyment and eating — the harvest thanksgiving Bihu celebrated around Makar Sankranti (January). Communities build Meji (bamboo and thatch huts) in open fields the night before; feasts are held inside all night. At dawn the Meji is set ablaze as an offering. Traditional rice cakes (pithas: til pitha, sunga pitha, ghila pitha) are the culinary centerpiece. Assam's most community-oriented festival.
